Here’s the situation:
It’s currently 5am. Everything was perfectly find until about 8pm yesterday. Cinnabun was eating, playing, hopping around, being perfectly normal. I gave her dinner at 5pm like always, she ate hay she pooped. And then around 8, when it was play time I let her out of her pen and went to the living room like normal. Instead of hopping around, she decided to lay on a box. I didn’t think much of it. But then when play time was over, she went back into her pen, and continued to lay around, shifting positions more than normal. I thought maybe she had some gas so I gave her some simethicone and waited. That was at about 10pm. I didn’t seem to work so I gave her another dose at about 12:30am. She was still lying around, and had stopped eating. I checked her litter box and there was poo from after dinner, but not as much as normal. I decided to go to bed and see what it was like the morning. I came in and gave her a big bowl of greens, pellets, and hay and she hasn’t touched them. She’s still just lying down. Her tummy feels very soft and normal and I can hear the occasional gurgle. Do I need to get her to the vet? My car is currently dead and I have no other way to get her there except a cab. I gave her another round of simethicone just now (5 am). What is happening? Everything was perfectly fine.
Oh No, Not little Cinnabun….
Have you put her in your lap and given tummy rubs… Pepper had a couple of events like this over 12 months ago and tummy rubs did the trick but she was fine within 8 hrs.
Can you borrow a car to get to the vet ??
Check about… Is there anything she could have gotten into ?? Have you changed any of her foods recently or purchased greens from a different grocer ?
I’ve been giving her some tummy rubs. It doesn’t seem to help, but it doesn’t seem to hurt either.
No changes in food at all. And she ate some of her dinner when I changed her hay at 5pm last night. And had some poo. It’s like it just hit suddenly.
OK… Lets work through the obvious… Teeth and ears… Have you had a look to see if her ears are OK, is there any grinding ? Has she been favoring one food over another ?
No grinding of her teeth.
Her ears look normal, but maybe a little less warm than normal?
There has been no favoring of food. And she just turned her nose up at a banana.
Has she had dental problems before ? Has she had a recent dental check ? I don’t exactly know why but I a thinking teeth.
No dental problems before.
Her last vet appt was probably last July and everything was fine.
Can I ask: if it is stasis, what is going to happen? I’ve never had this happen before. I’m waiting for a call back from the vet. What kind of drugs might he use? What shouldn’t he use?
Not being a vet I would not even hazard a guess.
Right. Sorry. I guess motility drugs? Her tummy still feels the same, it’s very soft and normal. I have her on the couch right now under a blanket. The temp of her ears keeps changing.
UPDATE:
I’m going to the vet in about two hours. I’m still trying to find some sort of ride, but if anything it’s a 10 min walk from the nearest bus stop. I’ll make sure her carrier is warm to handle that.
I’ve tried tummy rubs (doesn’t seem to cause her any pain). She accidentally peed on me but I don’t know if that was because she had to go to the potty or because I was rubbing her tummy. I can’t tell if her tummy is silent or is making very very soft noises. She still refuses food, including a banana.
No teeth grinding and she’s not hunched over, so far as I can tell. She’s just laying like she normally would.
Aw Cinnabun ! {{{Feel better Girl}}}
I came across this the other day and thought it was really good. Something owners could save or print out. It’s by the Georgia House Rabbit Society but linked on the Medirabbit site.
http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Bunny_201.pdf (Some info on GI issues starts on page 15)
UPDATE!
About an 30 mins before we left for the vet, Cinnabun hopped into her liter box and left behind several healthy looking bunny poos. I was very proud but she still wasn’t eating so we went to the vet anyway.
Her tummy sounded/felt good. Her body temp was 101.4 (which I though was odd given how cold her ears were this morning).
Her teeth look great as did her ears and eyes.
The vet thinks she may have been a little dehydrated so she gave Cinnabun 2 syringes of sub-q liquids and told me to let her rest and give lots of hay and greens.
As I typed this she just hopped in and out of her liter box and left behind more poos, are perfect looking. And she just nibbled on some pellets!
Question: should I take away the pellets??
What on earth was wrong with her??
How much pellets do you give her?
I give about an 1/8 a cup per day.
I would try taking those away and see what happens. If she eats her hay and greens, that should suffice.
What kind of treats do you give her?
Ok, I took away the pellets.
She gets a bite of banana almost everyday since I have them with my lunch. She also gets one or two cranberries. Am I giving her a little too much? Should I maybe cut her off for awhile? She weighed 5.3lbs today.
Do you think maybe her watter bottle wasn’t working properly? I’ve started giving my boys water in a bowl…just in case. After Baxter was very lethargic one evening, I brought him a water bowl in the middle of the night – and he drank a ton! and was back to his normal self in the morning,
I just checked. Her water bottle seems to be working fine. I tried switching her to a bowl once and she acted like it was an affront to all of bunny kind. Just stared at it.
Definitely the sugar can cause an imbalance so I would really limit those and see what happens.
Poor Cinnabun! I hope she is feeling much better! (((((Vibes)))))
Great to hear she improved so much.
Has she been tearing into cardboard or paper more lately? It can cause probs with some buns if the eat too much of it.
Thanks everyone!
She’s nommed a bit more hay and is eating some veggies as I type this.
She has been tearing into cardboard, but I’m not sure if it’s more than normal. She’s always been a chewer, especially cardboard, but I’ll keep an eye on that. Thanks!
Happy that Cinnibun is feeling better.
I would definitely get a bowl of water. She may think its a affront to all bunny kind for a little while and then get over. When I first got Pan he hated bowls and would always flip the moment I set it in his cage(then he would binky all over the place because he showed me up). I had a scare very similar to yours last year and the vet said he was most likely dehydrated. So I got a bowl that attaches to the side of his cage. Now he has the bowl and the water bottle.
I was wondering about bananas as well – because Baxter’s little episode was after he had some banana. I usually give them only a little chunk – but wondered if Baxter stole baby Boos and had more than intended. The next day after he felt ill – I noticed a couple large poops – and wondered if he had some constipation, after too much banana. Not sure – but will not be sharing any with him for some time.
