› Forum › THE LOUNGE › Condo Explosion/Fire – Bun Questions.
Hey everyone – as some of you may have heard (if you’re friends with me on Facebook) – we had a bad explosion in our condo building (actually in our hallway) early yesterday morning around 7am. A man was being evicted at 11am that day for not paying his condo association fees and so instead, he unplugged his gas stove, let it fill the condo with gas, and then it was ignited. Horrible people in this world, I guess he wanted everyone else to suffer with him. The man is the only fatality thank the Lord.
It was beyond the scariest moments of my life. I was sleeping next to the bun x-pen as Sidney and Simba have been picking on each other again, and I was home alone since the BF was in Philly for a meeting… so I wanted their company close by anyway. At 7am the fire alarm in the building went off. This has happened a lot with older people pulling it for no reason and creating ruckus. After less than a minute of it going off, the fire alarm stopped. So I laid back down and then a HUGE explosion rang out through the hallways and condo literally shook. I had no idea what had happened but then I heard screaming. I opened my condo door and a girl went running by screaming and crying and the whole hallway was filled with pitch black smoke. I had no way to get the bunnies out (as I felt I was going to pass out from all the smoke rather quickly) so I ran to find help. While running down the exit stairs (we live on the 5th floor) the lights in the hallway went out. It was terrifying. Especially knowing my buns were still up there. I made it down to the security guard (as the alarm still wasn’t on again) and quickly told him this was a real fire and their had been an explosion on the 5th floor. He was in shock and started saying how they thought it was a false alarm again. So they quickly sounded it again. Finally the firefighters got there in what seemed forever but was probably only a few minutes. Thank god for the way our building is set up – all the doors are fire-proof and the condo is designed to keep fire out of the condos. And thankfully, it did a great job of just doing that. A firefighter took me up to find the bunnies instead of waiting for someone else to check. And I was horrified when we stepped out onto my floor. I was so scared, I thought they were surely dead. There was smoke and nothing but blackness everywhere. We finally got into my condo, and huddled in a corner, terrified out of their minds, but alive… were my babies. I have never cried so hard in my life. I ran in the other room to see Nora and she was just fine also. They were terrified but I tossed them in a carrier and we got them out.
We took them to our pet store to wait since it’s been snowing out here lately and really cold. I finally met up with Aaron as he took a flight back from Philly to get here. Around three, they began letting other residents back into the building but our floor wasn’t supposed to have occupants. But we went up anyway and retrieved some of our things for us and the bunnies. Thankfully for us, his dad was out of town for the weekend so we brought the bunnies there to get our thoughts together. The amazing bunny community in Pittsburgh managed to bring us an x-pen that someone had and we bought another one for the quartet. Not to their happiness as they were having a ball running around the kitchen like crazies. God, the Tans have never been so lovey in their LIVES. They were all over us, cuddling and jumping on us. But goodness did they smell like smoke. Horribly like smoke. We made them up some litter boxes and gave Nora some food and then realized around 9:30 pm last night that the smoke may have affected the items. We ran down the stairs and began tossing everything out. But all the pet stores were closed by that time. We took away all their toys as the smoke had seaped into the wood making it smell and even the unopened bag of CareFresh. Which is where acouple of my questions are coming from.
Question 1: We took away their pellets last night (both Noras and the quartet) so Nora hasn’t had pellets in almost 24 hours and the quartet even longer. We did not give them any pellets last night. They had a salad as soon as we got them situated which was directly from the store so no contamination there. The BF is out buying some pellets right now (this happened at 7am yesterday and it’s 4pm here right now) – should I skip the pellets they missed yesterday, give them pellets when he gets home, and then more tonight at their usual time, or introduce the pellets again slowly since they’ve been without them for a day n a halfish? Kinda different questions, since Nora is supposed to be unlimited since she’s only 3 months.
Question 2: We had nothing to give them but the hay we got out of our condo which was stored in a box in a closet. We took the chance and gave them the hay since I was worried about their stomachs going into stasis from no activity. The hay in the bag I brought out doesn’t smell like smoke – but I’m still not sure. He’s out buying more right this minute – but do you guys think this could be harmful? Or do you think they would’ve shown symptoms by now if it was too bad? We are throwing it out as soon as he comes home with more hay but I still worry about what they have eaten already.
All in all, everyone and everybunny seems okay. I had called the vet after I got them out to ask what signs and symptoms I should check for. She told me and they haven’t expressed any. Simber Bun has sneezed a few times but with no discharge and he has been prone to sneezing every once in awhile in the past. All have been eating and drinking fine. As well as being active and playful and all seem to be doing okay. Our vet told me as long as they show no signs within 24 hours, they should be in the clear and okay. SO everybunny is okay I do believe! Nora had to skip one dose of her Baytril yesterday as the fire happened at 7am and she was due to receive her dose at 8:30am and we were hours later than that when I was finally able to retrieve her medicine. I just messaged someone about her prescription and if we should get a new one or not (although we’ve given her two doses already).
This has really been hell – but thankfully all of the buns and I are okay. That’s what really matters. Now we are making an evacuation plan for when only one of us is there with the buns. It was so scary and it was so hard to think. I am still mad at myself for even daring to leave them to find help but the boyfriend keeps telling me that if I would’ve carried them into the hallway full of dark smoke – it could’ve been worse than when I got them and it had lightened up a bit and our fire-proof door was blocking the smoke also. It’s just so hard to think in a time like that. I know I easily could’ve passed out and gotten none of us to safety but it’s just… hard. He also keeps telling me that if I wouldn’t have gotten help and passed out then no one would have known we were there and he could’ve lost his girlfriend AND his bunnies. And I know he’s right… but it’s still difficult to think about. I was going to get them help but it’s so hard to leave them like that. And hard to think about. As they are everything to me.
Anyways, here’s a photo of our hallway when we went back up.
So scary! The fire chief called it Dantes Inferno in there. So freaking. Anyways, if anyone has any advice about pellets or the hay, I’d love any feedback. The vet should returning my call about the medicine soon though so hopefully that question will be fixed.
Also, sorry if this thread is kind of all over the place… my brain is nothing but all over the place right now. But I thought you guys might be able to give some insight.
<3 <3 Love this community.
Oh my goodness – that is awful. What is wrong with that man…sounds like he sadly had some issues beyond money.
I think just get the rabbits back on their normal feeding schedule and all will be fine – you are probably more stressed by the incident now than they are and it’s more traumatic for you than them. I’m not entirely certain of the hay, but if it seems fresh but it sounds like it would be fine to me in a pinch.
Was the baytril in the fridge? Then it should be fine as long as it stay refrigerated even if it’s out for a few hours my vet has told me it is still okay.
Glad you are physically okay but you may take awhile to get mentally better as your stress reduces. Hugs to you.
Christ, hope you and your buns are ok!! Must have been terrifying, you definitely did the right thing and the buns are ok – once they get back into some normality they’ll be fine Hats off to the fireman who took you up to get them, i cant even imagine how relieved you must have been! Hope all of you are ok, some people in this world are just broken beyond repair. x
Tanlover have you ever read the condo bylaws to see as far as the pets go, how this would be enforced since you’ve mentioned there are no pets allowed. Also you should look into what rights if any you have if they discover the rabbits – can they put a lien on your condo and fine you? Just something to seriously consider since you have 5 rabbits now. I know this is off the topic of what you asked but I think you need to look into this especially since this horrible incident has provoked a close call for you and the buns.
Thanks for the responses, guys. And the encouraging words.
Sarita – I thought it was Baytril, it’s actually Bactrim! I was confused when you asked if it was refrigerated because no one had ever said anything about refrigerating it. The vet hasn’t gotten back to me yet but her next dose isn’t scheduled until 8:30 tonight. I was more worried because it was just sitting out on a counter, not concealed in any type of container except the one which it came in.
I thought I’d add a few pictures of my brave little bun buns.
Aww they are lovely, bet they’re just pleased to be safe and tucked up
Oh my goodness!!!! I am so glad that you guys are safe and well!!!!
First, I am so sorry you all have been through this oreal – one of my worst nightmares. Very relieved to have you out, safe and in a home you know. You’re boyfriend is right, you used quick thinking and good judgement and I think that’s why you and the bunnies are all alive and well right now. It’s hard not to go over a trauma in your mind, but it wasn’t worse so try to avoid the “might have been….” thoughts.
1. No worries about no pellets. Hay, water and greens are the staples first, pellets next. It’s more that if you were to run out of greens, the pellets would provide missing nutrients, but it’s the hay and water that they can survive on for a while. Bunnies are much more flexible in a crisis than we believe, and they are prone to survival tactics, so they are doing fine.
2. I doubt there is anything wrong with the hay they’re had. If it were effected by the smoke, it would smell worse to them than to you, and they would probably not eat it. Ever seen them be reluctant to eat greens that were getting stale? They really don’t eat anything in sight the way other animals might, so unless is a chemical smoke (and you said gas) I wouldn’t be concerned. by now they’re probably gobbling down the fresh stuff.
3. Regarding Sarita’s point about the condo rules: Do you own your condo? I think you will be going over the contract with your insurance co. anyway due to potential damage. If they are not allowed, don’t put in a claim for any expenses related to them. If it breaks your lease you need to learn that. However, my first thought is that the building owner will be much more worried about repairs to the building and ever being able to see that condo again with the damage to the hallway, so it may not be as important an issue as it could have been before this happened. Bunnies are quiet and don’t damage property (except carpet that you would replace anyway), so compared to this, it’s probably not a big issue. Just know your obligation as well as your rights and insurance parameters. When you get a chance to calm down and get back home. You may be considering moving for a while, depending on what the damage turns out to be.
Breathe. Hug bunnies. {{{{{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}}}
With all that smoke.. and knowing what goes into most construction materials, i would get them some new hay too. And as mentioned on facebook, this is one situation I would recommend giving them baths too. Especially given how black that smoke got, it can have some rather harmful stuff in it.
You definitely did the right thing by going to get help. It sounds like the buns will all be okay.
When can you return to your condo? Was there a lot of damage in your apt?
You get fined $50 for each time an animal is seen in your condo (we do own, RabbitPam – it’s a condo association rule to help keep the values on the property up). I’m not sure if they would come back daily to check if they DID find an animal inside or if you could play it off as you were watching someones pet while they were out of town, pay the fine and be done, or if we would have to replace them somewhere else until time has passed and we could smuggle them back in, LOL. We aren’t putting anything of theirs in the insurance submissions, just our stuff. But we have been in contact with management and no one has mentioned anything. So for right now, it’s not an issue. Also, no one except firefighters saw me bring them out. I quickly left with them as soon as we got out. People weren’t allowed in the building and were being evacuated to another building so there were no residents or management that saw me with them when they were brought out. Just firemen everywhere. So I THINK we are safe. If not, we will have to deal with that when the time comes. Our evacuation plan we had with both of us covered concealing them so they couldn’t be seen. But when we went up to get them, all I cared about was getting them out, dealing with repercussions later. So this new plan for when one of us is only home will be concealing them also. The really good part is – if we DO get caught and need to relocate them for a bit, our rabbit community here is fabulous with boarding other peoples rabbits so we could find a responsible person to take them until we could get them back.
RabbitPam, I figured as much. They are munching on two big bowls of greens right now. I was concerned about Nora though as she hasn’t been introduced to greens yet. I was waiting until she gained weight and got off her meds for her resp. infection before introducing them to her. The vet and us both were sure she wasn’t being fed at the pet store because of how skinny she was – so I worried about trying anything new with her tummy until we made sure the infection cleared and she was used to the pellets with no tummy issues. She hasn’t become lethargic at all yet though, so I’m thinking she’s fine.
The fireman made me laugh as he carried them downstairs – he said “I bet this isn’t a pet allowed building as no one has mentioned people and pets” and I was like “yeah.. no” and he was like “who gives a $*&! right now anyways.” I couldn’t help but just laugh.
Well, most likely your pets aren’t covered for damages under your condo insurance anyway – they MAY pay for boarding however under the “Loss of Use” clause so ask them concerning that – insurance varies from state to state and they may pay boarding costs for pets. Anyway your condo insurance would pay for this not the condo association’s insurance. Not sure how you handle your condo insurance from the studs in as that is what pays for damage (at least in Texas where I live) for personal effects and damage from the walls in. Usually the building itself and the common areas are covered under the HOA, not the inside of the condos.
We got really lucky – besides smoke damage only a few other things are ruined. The door is a goner but the condo association is replacing those (Yay!) and a few things fell off the shelves and broke. But other than that, just smoke damage. Thank goodness for how well our building was built to contain fire to one area or I’m sure it would have been much worse.
We can return as soon as our condo is cleaned. We were trying to get in contact with the company who is doing the building – but they haven’t called us back yet. They advised not going back until their cleaned. So we are waiting. Rather than taking the buns back in with that smell lingering. I’m not sure if it could be harmful to them but I don’t want to risk it.
Monkeybun, no baths. But I did wipe them each down with a damn washcloth. I was afraid of stressing them out too much after the day they had. I’ve never seen them so terrified. It was horrible.
Which makes me want to point out – catching a bun that is terrified (even in an x-pen) is NOT easy. So practice those evacuation plans with the bunnies guys!!!! They were horrifying hard to get a hold of.
Yeah, the condo insurance (wasnt sure if it was through the association or not) is paying for the door but nothing else inside the condos. We have already filed a claim with homeowners insurance and have been calling back and forth to see what it covers and what it doesn’t. So we are on the ball with this – thankfully!
My brother works is a lawyer at a law firm that represents insurance companies so he told me to keep him in the loop on whats happening to make sure we aren’t being worked over or anything. And is giving good advice on how to go about getting things covered so we don’t get stuck in any of those weird loopholes.
omg! i am so glad you and your bunnies are safe!
You did the right thing getting yourself to safety first and going back. I’ve always said, in an emergency, if you can get the animals out and you safely and fast do it. If not, you have to protect yourself first and foremost (and obviously any human children).
I’ve always been weary of 24/7 free range because of the chance of a nighttime emergency. If possible, I’d try to have a large carrier always within a reasonable distance just in case.
OMG tanlover! That is awful! So this guy basically killed himself then? Over money and being evicted? Sounds like he was very disturbed to begin with. Did you know him or talk to him at all?
Well I’m glad you are okay and the buns are okay. I agree with the others, you did the right thing given the circumstances. The firefighter was so nice to help you retrieve them. They were terrified, but I’m sure they will be over it sooner than you think. Rabbits are funny that way. If you’re worried about the hay and pellets, then replace them. I think the others are right though, if they were bad the buns would most likely refuse to eat them.
This is a great reason to not allow 24/7 freedom. Could you imagine trying to find your buns in that mess?! I’m so glad you got out ok. It’s crazy how you think you’re so safe and then suddenly your world gets flipped upside down. You handled yourself better than I would have lol did they give you an estimated time that your condo will be ready to go back to?
Well, the thing is.. cats and dogs would have the same issue with being free range. So would you cage them, too? When my rabbits are scared, they run to me. And they can be trained to run to a carrier too, so I would suggest to people to have an accessible carrier for each pet and train them to go to it, so it’s easier in an emergency.
Ugh! Tanlover…
I’m just so sorry you guys have been through this but thankful everyone is well.
I think I held my breath reading your entire post.
(((((HUGS)))))
OMG! I’m late to the thread, but I’m so glad that you, your boyfriend, and all your buns got out safe and sound. I can’t imagine going through something like that, and making good rational decisions to boot!
Oh wow, so glad to hear yall are okay!!! I can’t even imagine something like that happening. That’s just so crazy.
Oh wow Roberta. That’s so incredibly sad. A devastating loss. Maybe re-post in the Rainbow Bridge section?
I made it down to the security guard (as the alarm still wasn’t on again) and quickly told him this was a real fire and their had been an explosion on the 5th floor. He was in shock and started saying how they thought it was a false alarm again. So they quickly sounded it again.
Incredible! Sounds like the condo assoc. needs to review procedure here. Things could have gone very bad fast if nobody had alerted them in time. I imagine residents will be up in arms about it.
How are you doing TL?
This is very tragic; I am happy that you got out safely.
That said, apartment insurance, at least in Canada, usually stipulates that if you are found to have been in contravention of your lease, even if it is totally unrelated to the incident, your insurance is null and void. This is actually what stopped me from getting a bird feeder last summer. You may wish to see if that is the case for your condo insurance. If it is, were I you, I would remove bunny evidence from the place as soon as may be, and take up people’s offers to house your five temporarily.
Good luck with all of this.

LBJ, He was a very disturbed man – I’m confident he had a mental illness but no one ever thought he was violent. Although, he had flipped out on a few people more than once…but we always just thought he wasn’t good socially. Because it was never violently or anything of the such. Just a little freaky. He seemed off quite a bit. And the newspapers said he had been in a court battle with our condo association for having back $10,000+ in association fees. But he denied he did. Personally, I never thought he should be living alone. He looked like he couldn’t manage very well. But this is of course just based off from seeing him in the hallways and such. We haven’t seen a picture of the man so I’m not POSITIVE it is this same individual BUT I’m almost certain as there were only a few people down that way and he’s the only single man I’ve seen down that way that is around that age. And I never saw him come out of the building either. Not to mention, they said the man who did it was a “recluse” (statement from his neighbors) but no one thought him violent. So I’m pretty positive as everyone is very friendly in our hallway except for this man. He was always muttering and fighting with himself under his breathe. And would lash out at you (verbally) if you said something. One time we were waiting for the elevator and he came up and my BF was like “these elevators take so long” and he just started yelling about how you have to wait your turn and it’s just not fair to everyone else if you don’t wait your turn and was pacing back and forth in the hallway while yelling and muttering this to himself, half at us and half I’m not sure because he’s always muttering and talking when no one is with him. Really a sad story if it is the man I thought. A lot of people in our building are very elderly and don’t have many visitors – we’ve been told they’ve lived there since the building opened and it’s like a lot of their children just left them there and forgot about them. Or something. It’s really sad but most of them are very friendly and get around well. It’s just such a sad story. I really worry about the people who are elderly, this is their home and they may have no where to go. You just want them to live the rest of their lives out in peace and them someone has to go and do something to shake their lives up.
NewBunnyOwner, the buns were running EVERYWHERE. And they are in an x-pen. Oh god. Grabbing them was so difficult. Between my nerves and their terrified looks, ugh. Just horrible. As Monkeybun suggested, they can be taught to run to a carrier. A blind lady who is WONDERFUL in our rabbit community has taught all the buns in her house to come on command. To help in case of an emergency. After my situation, she has worried that they may be terrified and just run. Ignoring the call. She has fosters also. I think it’s just a situation you have to prepare for the best you can. With evacuation plans and whatnot. After what happened, one of the ladys who runs the rescue where we got Simba from – she has TONS of rabbits as her rescue is based on fosters and she said her evacuation plan in an emergency is to throw them all in pillow cases. Because she just wouldn’t have enough hands for all those carriers.
Thank you everyone else for your kind words – and especially with saying I did the right thing. As much as I tell myself, I can’t go back over it in my head. I do. It’s really hard to deal with the fact that I left them. It was to get help. But they are my babies. They rely on me to make them safe, to keep them out of dangerous situations, and to care for them at all times. I just keeping staring at them and thinking “what if I couldn’t have gotten back to them in time”. Rabbits have become such an important part of my life, they healed me from a miscarriage when nothing else helped me mentally. They really gave me everything I needed in one of the hardest times of my life – and so it has really been weighing on my mind about leaving them behind. They are my little rocks. Whenever I have a bad day, even the Terrible Tans are always jumping all over me. Like they know. Le Sigh.
Thanks for all the help and kind words everyone. My boyfriend kept telling me all the things you all are – and I know he’s right. But sometimes you need to hear it from multiple people to help it settle in.
Roberta, I saw it on the rabbit Community on Facebook and my heart really goes out to her. So much. I have burst into tears a number of times by just looking at my buns and knowing they are safe and okay. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain she is feeling right now. Binky Free Babies <3 <3 [Roberta's comments transferred to March Chat per her request. RP]
I’m too glad to hear you’re all safe and alright. Hope everything will go back to normal for you as soon as possible.
All still well TL? No adverse after effects?
I was thinking the dry bath technique might help take out some of the smoke residue in the bunnies fur. A rubdown with cornstarch.
The smoke smell is all gone from them. So I think they’re all good! Everyone has been eating, poo’ing, and drinking just fine. Although the Tans are starved for attention. Every time we are near them they are jumping against the x-pen at us trying to reach us. We just haven’t had as much time to be with them as we are trying to figure everything else with the condo out.
A cleaning crew came yesterday to clean up a lot – another company came and took all of our clothes, shoes, bed stuff, anything they could wash with something they said would take the smoke out. Today starts the long process of throwing pretty much everything away and replacing. Containers we have, food, hangers, pillows, ect. They said just about anything plastic would absorb the smell. Someone has to come out when they get a chance to repaint the walls. We are holding up. The money is not, LOL.
I’m glad you guys are doing well. =] I’m surprised that the condo people are not helping with expenses since it something that happened on their watch. Can the insurance company help with the costs too? I know having to start from scratch is pretty costly.
Oh my gosh! That sounds horrible. I’m so sorry, that sounds terrifying. I’m glad to hear the buns are okay. If you live near Philly, is there anything I could do to help?
We have an appraiser coming in to check from our homeowners insurance ASAP (who knows when that will be). We are using the same service the condo building is for fire renovation. So they’ve been really helpful so far with taking anything that can be washed through them. And giving us estimates of what can be kept and what can’t be – we went there today to try and throw out and replace stuff but they said we should wait until the insurance company comes to look so we don’t buy and have them decide not to pay for it. So it’s going to be a long process I’m sure.
So we’ve decided to remain at his fathers place until something that can get settled between insurance company and whatnot before we throw anything away or purchase more – so we are just surviving on necessities for now.
Thought I would update anyone who was still interested: We had cleaners do a quick-clean of our condo and they apparently didn’t do a very good job as the place was still pretty bad. So we cancelled our contract with them and got another cleaning company through the insurance agency. The insurance agency was pretty adamant about finding a way to cancel the contract because the cleaning company we had (they were doing the whole building) and couldn’t do a thorough clean for a few weeks at the least. And the insurance company was afraid they would have to pay for our hotel expenses so they dealt with the other cleaning company and got us a new one. So today they are inside cleaning the condo – which HOPEFULLY means we will be able to be back home either tomorrow or Friday!
So far we haven’t had any problems with the insurance company and we’ve asked questions the whole way so not to get stuck up in any traps. I think we are all ready to go home. I know the hallway where it happened as been worked on non-stop so people could move back onto our floor. My boyfriend was up there yesterday with the insurance lady and he said they have gotten a lot done. So cross your fingers for us!!! Buns and humans are all ready to go back home.
Although, I must admit… I am a little worried! The smell of smoke still lingers on that whole floor. When I’ve gone up to the condo to scope things out (two or three times I’ve been back now) it puts me a little on edge. Funny part is I think it’s more about the bunnies. I’m kind of nervous to leave them alone in the condo now without one of us there.
I’m glad that the insurance company is working with you guys! They can be a real hassle and give you issues. If you’re worried about the buns. (I know this sounds crazy.) But if it puts your mind at ease, have you thought of putting a nanny cam in for them? At least, this way you won’t be worrying about them and can check in on them if you get worried. Just a thought. =]
The nanny cam is a great idea, Skipper’s Mama!!
tanlover, you could always post the link here and we can all keep an eye on them…
Wow, that is one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever heard! I’m so glad you and the buns are all ok.

Lol!
Yes, put me in to take a watch shift too. ; )
So glad you guys are okay!! Hugs to you and your buns, all six of you are so brave!
HAHAHAHAHAHAH! The nanny cam…. I think I just died laughing. Such a perfect idea. Sounds like what the boyfriend did when we were cementing Simba’s bond with the others – I told him to watch the bunnies (non-stop like I had been the past FOUR weeks) and I come home and he’s in the other room playing video games. I was livid and then I was like… “Oh no you didn’t….” Yupp, he did. He couldn’t have told me about such a thing when I was doing the bonding…..
This may not be necessary – as we may be moving home tonight!! Let’s hoopeeeeee. The insurance company has been going HARD on the restoration company they hired to finish the job. (We told them if we were displaced for much longer, we would need a hotel. Haha! Seemed to speed them RIGHT up!). So they had four guys working non-stop for three days (including today!) and they called this morning to let us know they should be finished today! OH PLEASEEEEEE I PRAY WE CAN GO HOME TONIGHT!!!!!!! It also depends on if the insurance company thinks the walls and carpets need to be redone and painted, so let’s hope everything else is okay! They estimated after everything is said and done – the insurance company will be paying about $30,000 in damages. Which is insane. Thank GOD we had homeowners insurance or almost everything would have been lost.
Some of our clothes – the cleaners have been doing a crappy job on – so the insurance company is also thinking about telling them to keep the clothes and giving Aaron money to buy new ones. (I’m not on the homeowners insurance but I agree). His suit came back smelling like an ashtray – the SECOND time they had to take it back and reclean it. Both times saying this happens a lot and it just meant it needed to be soaked longer. As a company, why would you send any of your clothes back like that? Just ridiculous. I have some items with me though that they did emergency cleaning on and they came out fine so I’m fine as long as we can get home and settled back into our normal lives!
Yay TL! I’m glad you guys may be going home!!! Things always feel so much better when you get to sleep at home! =]
I’m surprised they sent the suit with it smelling subpar! It’s a good thing for homeowners insurance! =]
I still think you need the nanny cam!
We are HOMEEEE!
HAHAHAHA, Hazel… Too funny. I might need one! Sidney keeps trying to jump the x-pen. Idk what’s gotta into her – I guess all the stress and anxiety from moving place to place. Nora is doing the best – she has a new house so maybe she just doesn’t even notice. Haha! We are going to buy them another x-pen to expand their area – they are all in a large one right now. But this is the first time in a really long time that no one had any accidents! WHOOOP. I think Sidney will be okay though – she has her bunny buddies to help her through this.
It IS really good we had homeowners insurance – almost everything has to be replaced. It’s so depressing throwing SOO much away. We had to spend a huge chunk of money on new sheets and blankets and pillows. And we have two air mattresses for friends when they stay over so we had to replace everything that goes with those. Oy Vey. Not to mention the food. Throwing away and documenting sooooo much food. Never realized just how stocked up on food and items we were until you’re going through them all. The spices, everything. And my BF is a big cooker. So it’s all expensive tooo. I’m not sure how much of the food products the insurance will cover – we have a lot. I can’t see them covering it all. LOL. But it’s whatever I suppose. Has to be replaced no matter how you look at it. Whether they pay or not.
We also got a $6,000 laundry bill. OY. Half of which is mine (I’m not on the homeowners insurance). And half of which is still horrible smelling. BUT the insurance company offered to pay for my laundry bill too! They seem to just want the whole thing settled as quickly as possible. They had all the carpets steam-cleaned and the smell is all gone so no need to replace those. Our condo doesn’t smell like smoke anymore except when you get really close to the door because of the hallways. But it’s coming along..
We are going to the Penguins hockey game today! WHOOO. We have sold the last few tickets we had because everything has been so crazy between Nora being sick and the condo being a disaster. We really should stay and inventory and replace – but we felt we deserved a break out at the game.
It really does feel good to be home but I think I’m having some bad anxiety from it also. It’s not being in the condo itself – it’s the hallways. They just remind me of all the smoke and not being able to see, the running, having to leave the buns for help. It’s overwhelming I suppose. I threw up last night (I ate and my stomach just couldn’t handle it) and this morning it has been TERRIBLE. Hopefully the anxiety (if that’s what it is) goes away soon. It’s annoying to say the least.
Hugs for you. I’m so glad you’re home, but I can totally understand the anxiety involved with being back there, remembering that day and all the stress with the buns.
My only advice is to try and take it easy. I think it’s good that you’re going to the game, help keep your mind off things.
As far as replacing things, maybe try to do it in stages? You don’t necessarily need every spice immediately. Replace what you need for your day to day survival and go on from there.
Tanlover, it’s crazy this happened to you, I had something similar happen to me this weekend. Thankfully not near as bad, but similar! It was 4am and the fire alarm went off in the apartment block. It was so so loud. And something about alarms just unnerve me to my core! Anyways, we got up instantly and I ran for the rabbit carrier. I went and got Siha first, she wasn’t majorily upset about the noise. She was spooked, but I was able to grab hold of her and put her in the carrier. Next we went to get Thane. He was freaking out! We opened his pen to grab him and he kept launching himself at the pen walls. Just freaking out! We eventually managed to grab hold of him and put him in the carrier. Next I had to run and put something on before going downstairs. We went into the hallway and met our neighbours who were just as confused as we were! We were all about to go downstairs and find out what was going on when the alarm stopped!
We were so baffled!! So we went back into our apartment and settled the buns down (Was great as a stress bonding exercise!). Put them back and made sure they were okay before going back to bed.
We were lying in bed for about 20mins when the alarm went off again. I just panicked. I lept out of bed to grab the buns all over again but this time the alarm stopped before I had to do anything. I think it may of been someone drunk as it was a Saturday night.
Anyways! It seems to have been a blessing in disguise as the two buns are now happily spending time together in the same room, cuddling and the like.
Haha! So sorry for the scare – I hate alarms also!
I can’t help but laugh at what you said about them happily spending time together now. Sidney was ALWAYS nit picking on Simba and apparently the situation turned out to be a GREAT way to stress bond! LOL. She hasn’t picked on him since! We jokingly said someone needs to pull the alarm when she decide to bond Nora – we’ll just throw her right in the carrier with them! I’d probably save a lot of time and energy! Bahahah.
It’s nuts! My pair haven’t had a disagreement since!!
Well, congrats!! Bonding (especially those LAST little issues between the two) can be so frustrating. I definitely know the feeling!
