› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Does anyone hum or talk to their rabbit?
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone else does this, because there are certain phrases I can say, or parts of songs I can hum, and my rabbit Misty gets really excited and will often jump in the air/do binkies. I look forward to hearing responses about this, as I find it really interesting.
I definitely talk to Vivian. I actually have to be careful not to say certain words — I think she is listening for them, like the word “circle” because I’ve trained her to do a circle for a treat, or even the word treat will set her off to beg me for goodies.
She definitely listens — what she thinks though, I have no idea! LOL. But it seems to calm her when I just talk to her in a normal tone of voice as if I am having a conversation. Sometimes I will read out loud something and her ears turn in different ways with interest but she she seems calm too. My other bunny Rucy used to be like that. Other bunnies I had paid attention to certain words but seem unaffected by regular conversation.
I talk to my rabbits. I have a special “rabbit voice”, similar to a baby voice and they recognize when I’m talking to them. I sing to them too. I’m just a crazy nut, mostly.
Olivia actually enjoys when I pet and sing softly to her.
I talk to my rabbits but they don’t really listen :~) I think it’s normal human behavior to do this too.
I talk to Munch all the time and also have a bunny voice I use with him as does my BF. Munch knows his name and reacts pretty excitedly when we talk to him. I talk whether I think he is paying attention to me or not.
I talk and sing to them, constantly….. Sometimes they run up to me but usually they just look at me as if I am insane.. Especially when I sing the Bun-yip song.
often the lyrics consist of a variation of “oh my goodness bunnies” since they instantly recognize ‘oh my gooodness’ in conjunction with getting out nom-noms.
i try to avoid doing it in public,, but sometimes i just don’t care.
We need a video of you singing to your bunnies, Mike ![]()
When I am approaching I often say, “I see a rabbit. I’m gonna grab it!” Picture it in a singsongy way.
I talk to Thane ALL THE TIME! I even sing songs I’ve just made up to him. Generally he knows when he’s getting fed because I run towrds him shouting ‘NOMS NOMS NOMS NOMS!’ ![]()
Thanks for the replies everyone! It’s really cool to see I’m not the only one who does this. If I sing the phrase “na na na na” to Misty, it makes her jump in the air and run towards me. And if I walk towards her and say “I’m gonna get you”, she runs away. Also, there are things I can say that make her groom my face. =)
I talk to the rabbits all the time. It is usually a baby voice, but I will talk more sternly if they are being naughty. How much Wooly understands, I don’t know. He knows treat and bedtime (because that means bedtime pellets). I tell them what good bunnies they are. I often find myself addressing Leopold too even though I know he can’t hear me.
Well at least I know that I’m not the only one who sings to their rabbits.
I also talk in a baby voice to them, they know when they’re getting fed because I say “Bunnies, time for nomnoms and they come running to the top of their cage where I normally feed them. :3
I talk to mine, yeah. But, they only listen if I have craisins. ![]()
I talk to them all the time
When I’m about to pick them up I always do the “Okay Penny/Dexter/Monty… Don’t worry… No one’s going to tackle you” in a soothing voice. I sing whatever song I have stuck in my head at them, but I throw their name into it at random intervals. I catch my husband making up “theme songs” for them all the time which I think is adorable ( he just takes a song and changes the words to be about whatever they’re doing).
Every morning when I open the kitchen door (hubby lets Buckley out at about 6am, but I’m not ready for breakfast until about 8am) I always say “Good Morning Buckley” and he runs towards me and I let him sniff my hand and then he runs away doing binkies. He’s adorable. I don’t think he understands any words I say to him though, don’t believe he recognises his name or when I say “bed time” or “treat”, although the crinkling of the Craisins bag make shim come running! Lol.
You’re not mad talking to your bunny, but then again, I couldn’t vouch that we aren’t ALL mad talking to them!!!! x
My rabbit is deaf, but I still find myself talking to him with my baby voice =) Can’t help it, he’s too cute!
I’m getting a kick out of my parents. My dad is often still reading the paper at the breakfast table which is near Sammy’s habitat. We hear him having a normal conversation, then realize he’s not on the phone – he’s talking to her.
Lately, in the early evening my mother relaxes on the couch that’s also near her space. Sammy lays down and faces her. My mother will start talking to her, and Sammy will move her lips just a little bit each time Mum pauses, as if she’s talking back by imitating her mouth movements. It happens so often that it seems deliberate. It’s so cute!
We all say “Good girl” in a voice she knows. Yesterday, Mum was playing bridge, her partner made a smart move and Mum said “Good girl!” in her bunny voice. She told me later that she had to cover her mouth to stop laughing because the woman didn’t know she’d used bunny praise.
RabbitPam, that is hilarious! Thane does the same thing from time to time ![]()
My dad is a very masculine man. Never shows his feelings and doesn’t like all this “lovey dovey” stuff. One day I heard this unusual high pitched voice coming from the living room. I sneak in there, and I see my dad down on the floor petting my rabbit Mochi, talking to him in this weird high pitched voice as if he was talking with a baby. It was hilarious! And strange, because this was the first time I see this “manly man” talk like that. I should have recorded it! Mochi is definitely spoiled!
I talk to all of my bunnies just like they were my kids, well because they are!! Plus they get used to your voice and it is a good way to help bond them to you. they learn not to fear your voice, your regular voice that is not the cutsie one we all try at first LOL. and all my bunnies look back at me and you can see in their little eyes the wheels turning in their little heads and they may not understand everything but they do understand quite a lot!!
Both the boyfriend and I talk to the buns ALLLL the time. It’s ridiculous.
Fleury will run when I say “MOMMAS GONNA GET YOU!” and I tickle his butt and he’ll run off binkying everywhere. It’s SOOO cute.
I do the same thing tanlover! I get the same response too!
But yes I talk to my buns all the time. I say stuff like “are you wanting more hay, Sally? Here you go! Awe it’s yummy, huh? Good girl!” Or I’ll say “time for your salad! Want a treat? MOVE!” Lol just a bunch of different phrases. Actually just tonight I was talking to Sally while giving her her salad and my hubby thought I was talking to him because he was eating a chicken salad lol
I basically tell my buns what I’m doing when I’m doing stuff in their cage like feeding them and trying to get their litterbox to clean it lol my husband doesn’t talk to any animals though for some reason so he probably thinks I’m weird. But I don’t even think about it, I just do it! I can’t silently care for my animals!
I think buns can learn certain phrases just like my dogs understand “want to go outside?” They will get excited and go to the door. Or “where’s your toy? Go get it!” And she will run and get a toy and bring it back to throw. I think rabbits will catch on too. So yeah, I’m vocal to all my fur babies ![]()
I talk to Foo all the time. Not just bun talk either, she will just happen to be one the wrong end of the conversation and end up listening to me endlessly. Ifewe have to do something like give her meds, we make up on the spot versions of the little bunny foo foo song about her and it seems to help calm her.
