I’m on another site, and a few bunny owners are feeding their rabbit yogurt drops. I’ve heard a lot of people say here that they are not good for them at all.

        Here’s one of their comments-

All the breeders I’ve gotten, and all of my vets say to feed them yogurt drops when re placing in a new home. It relaxes them and will calm there stomach down. Also, if a rabbit has diarrhea yogurt drops work great.

Are they bad for your rabbits or are they good? I hate to see someones rabbits get sick because of a yogurt drop? Please let me know.

IMO I think there’s no good reason to use them. Just adding sugar and dairy to the rabbit gut. Why bother when you can get a powder probiotic from health food store?

Bad news if that person thinks yogurt drops are a cure for diarrhea. If a rabbit has diarrhea it’s pretty sick and needs to see a vet.

For interest, here’s the ingredients for Vitakraft yogurt drops for Rabbits:

Ingredients: Sugar, powdered milk, cornstarch, vegetable oil, whey powder, soybean flour, yogurt powder, calciumphosphat, lecithin, vanilla, ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein (min.) 5.5%, Crude Fat (min.) 24.0%, Crude Fiber (max.) 0.7%, Ash (max.) 3.0%, Moisture (max.) 2.0%, Calcium (min.) 0.18%, Phosphorous (min.) 0.19%, Vitamin C 181 mg.

            Sugar is no.1 ingredient

Rabbits are herbivores and cannot digest dairy. Pet stores carry such things to make it look attractive and healthy to bunnies, and it is not.

Some rabbits have hardier guts then others. Some have overly sensitive guts. So overall, I wouldn’t be widely recommending yogurt drops for all if i were her. but what can you do?…
Just because she’s never had issue with the treats doesn’t mean they’re healthy. I would also think any vet with up to date knowledge would not be recommending them.

The important thing is you know what’s healthy and what isn’t and you can share that knowledge with people that are willing to listen.

I get why someone would think yogurt drops would help with GI upset, but the yogurt drops they sell for buns are more sugar than anything. Just adding a plain probiotic (Oxbow makes one I believe) is definitely the way to go.

Jersey is exactly right, as usual. Just because some buns don’t have an issue with yogurt drops (or cereal pieces or the other junky stuff that isn’t “good” for them), doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to feed. You can offer your opinions on this, but if this person is going to feed it, they’re going to feed it and probably nothing you say will change their mind. Share info, but don’t get upset if they choose to not listen or research further on their own.
