This morning I was woken by the sound of thumping coming from the bunny room. Not the usual ill tempered thumping demanding breakfast or Blossom having an attack of the vapours but serious Mummy Come Quick thumping.
So I charge into the bunny room and they are all against the far side of the play pen staring at the window and thumping. I look up to see a smallish rat sitting on the window (its an old style wooden one that opens out and I keep the screen closed and place a mesh barrier in as well for security) Well, the buns were not happy about their visitor. It was not trying to get in and appeared to be outside having a lovely snack on the daddy long legs spiders that get on the outside walls. I looked closer and noted it had round saucer like ears, not a black rat then… Whilst it had made it up to the window it’s climbing skills were not sufficient to provide it with a way down and it was clinging on for dear life, the thumping sounds emminating from the room within and the glare of 5 hostile bunnies was not helping matters.
I finally opened the screen and gave it a small nudge to encourage it to move off ( a black rat would have been agressive, not this little guy) he hung on even tighter to the window and looked terrified unable to find good purchase with his little feet. Finally it was to much and the little visitor leapt from the window into the cumquat bush adjacent to it (which is probably how he managed to get up to the potting table and across to the window in the first place)
I went outside sometime later and can only assume it made it into the lavender patch which was by then being closely guarded by two of my cats and the neighbours cat also.
The little bush rats are usually nocturnal so the poor little bugger had probably been stuck up there since before dawn. Just glad he didn’t get in, I suspect the buns would have made very short work of him.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a pic.
