Hello everybody. I am new to writing here, although I have been following the site and the forum ever since I adopted my bunnies 5 years ago. I had two, a male and a female ( both neutered of course). Bay, my male bunny died suddenly for no apparent reason two yrs ago. Lemon, my female is now with a health condition that has me worried sick. I found some vaginal discharge, took her to the vet immediately and was diagnosed with a uterine infection, pyometra. The vet said the best thing to do is for her uterus to be surgically removed. My questions are, have you heard of this condition? Do you know if surgery is the the option? He told me about antibiotics, (which she is already taking) but I cannot keep her on them forever. She is six yrs old, a Holland Lop, beautiful white fuzzy ball. Is she too old to undergo surgery? I want to be sure I am doing the best for her. I don’t want her to suffer. Any comments are welcome!
I’m sorry to hear she’s going through this. {{{vibes}}} for Lemon.
The uterus is normal removed when spayed. Was only her ovaries removed?
I think surgery should be safe for her, just have some bloodwork done first since she is an older bun. She’s also at risk of uterine cancer so removal would be in her best interest.
You might like to read through this thread if you haven’t already. This member had their 6 yr old bunny spayed successfully.

Oh no, vibes for you and Lemon! If she does not have any other health problems, I would encourage you to have her spayed. However, as jerseygirl mentioned, a blood panel should be performed first due to her age, just to make sure that her liver and kidneys are able to handle the antibiotics.
If you are seeing discharge it is probably an “open” pyometra, which is less emergent, but still needs surgery. I agree with a blood panel first, to make sure she is healthy enough, but this is not something you want to leave. If this develops into a “closed” pyometra then surgery is a must, immediately, because the infection isn’t draining any more and you risk a rupture of the uterus.
Sorry to hear that!!
I’ll chip in on the age thing-I’ve definitely seen and heard of much older bunnies going in for surgery. It’s really not any riskier, and your vet likely plans to do a blood panel first (this is pretty standard prior to surgery with rabbits, it’s to ensure they metabolize the anesthetic) . If your vet is comfortable with the surgery I would go for it!
Thank you all so much for your answers and healing vibes! My husband and I have decided to go for the surgery. She will probably be operated on on Saturday. What I can’t understand is that I had her spayed at 7 months! What did that vet do? Maybe she only removed her ovaries? I am really angry that, having taken the responsible decision of having her spayed, no she has to go through this… I really hope everything goes fine on Sat. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks!
Keep us posted on how the surgery goes. I also found this bizarre and thought I must have misread that she was spayed, but I guess the vet only removed the ovaries. This eliminates the pregnancy risk, but as you now know, other problems can crop up. Did the vet do an ultrasound? How sure is the vet that this is the issue?
For anyone reading this with an unspayed female, it is worth asking to make sure the vet will be performing a full hysterectomy (uterus) and oophorectomy (ovaries). Might as well get it all and only have to undergo surgery once.
Wishing your bunny an easy procedure and quick recovery.
I agree with K&K and suggest you have a pre-spay blood work done to make sure she is okay to undergo the procedure.
This surprises me as well. Is this the vet that performed the spay initially?
She is not too old to undergo surgery but you need to do a blood test. There are risks to this either way, but if it were my rabbit I would do the surgery.
Best of luck Saturday! Please keep us up to date on her progress.
No, this is a different vet, he is a well known exotics vet. Hope everything goes fine. I am def having a blood test. Thanks!
Please keep us updated – sending vibes to your Lemon (what a cute name that is).
Thank you for posting the link to the thread jerseygirl, it’s reassuring to know it has been done successfully. I’ll keep you posted!
Ok. So we are back from surgery. Everything went just fine!!! Guess your healing vibes payed off! Thanks! She is kind of groggy and in pain, I guess. I already can’t wait for her to be herself again. It is so hard to see her in pain… As I supposed, when she was spayed at 7 months, they only remived her ovaries. The vet told me she should be back to almost normal in about two days. I hope she starts eating soon. Any extra recommendations will be more than welcome! I’ll heep you posted on her progress.
Thank you for the update – healing vibes to little Lemon. I would try not to fool with her too much – I know it’s hard when you are anxious.
Did the vet give you any pain meds?
I left her in her favourite cozy and I just go and check on her from time to time. I am trying not to get anxious about her eating today. She is moving more than I had expected, changing position mainly. She was given pain killers for the surgery and I came home with more the vet prescribed. He told me to wait until night to give them to her. I hope she heals fast. Thank you for your concern.
WOW That’s too bad you had to spay her twice! I didn’t realize she had been spayed but they only took her ovaries
Poor dear to go through two spays. I’m so glad it all went well though and she’ll be herself again soon ![]()
So glad to be reading the update. Wishing Lemon a speedy recovery!
Glad to hear that the spay went well.
Update. Lemon started eating yesterday a few hours after her surgery. However, it was not until today that she started pooping! I never thought a tiny ball of poop could bring such joy LOL! What a relief. She has also been nibbling more veggies today and showing some serious rabbitude, which is just like her. I hope her recovery goes on this well! I’ll keep you posted!
