  It’s been forever since I’ve posted on here!!! My laptop broke and I’m too poor to fix it for now. haha I’ve missed everyone loads tho!!! I have a weird question to ask you guys. I’ve looked on the internet and can’t really find much on this so I figured some of you bunny savy people *coughs* Sarita *coughs* could answer this for me! :p
  
  One of our little buns, Gussie ( jersey wooly) sounds to me like he has asthma. Ever since the day we brought him home, he smiles like a fool when he’s happy. Which is when he’s playing, play time in the garden, or when anyone is holding and petting him. He litterally lowers his bottom lip and shows ALL his teeth in the biggest goofy grin. He seriously looks like a big dork and it’s quite comical! When we first brought him home in AUgust I thought there was something wrong with him, or his teeth needed to be filed down. But as time went on I realized he had his mouth closed, but would smile like a fool when he was happy.
  
  ABout a month or so back, when he gets REALLY happy his breathing sounds odd. THe only way I can describe it, is that it sounds like he has asthma. That happens when he plays in the garden (which he loves) or when his favorite people are holding him. I was holding him today and loving on him and the funny breathing never stopped. It really worries me somtimes because he’s so little and his lungs sound like they hurt. haha Poor thing probably needs a little bunny inhaler ANyhoo…I couldn’t get him to calm down or even stop smiling and close his mouth. He finally calmed down when I put him on the desk beside the computer monitor. Whew!
  
  Does anyone know if this is okay? HE just gets so excited it’s like he can’t contain his excitment and he breaks out in a huge grin and sometimes asthma like breathing depending on who’s holding him, or what he’s doing.
  
  If anyone has a bunny who’s done this or has advice I’d really appreciate it!

  Has he had a vet exam? The combo weird mouth and breathing sounds like it could be related, I’d hate to say he wasn’t smiling, it sounds so cute, but two really odd things could be related and could be indicative of something else.
  That being said if he’s had an all clear from the vet and she was able to observe the mouth thing, then I would just see a vet re; the breathing. As this came on a month ago and isn’t something that’s normal for him and he hasn’t seen a vet for it, I would see one for it. I can’t even hazard a guess as to why his breathing would become audible only sometimes, but I think it’s definitely worth a trip in to see if anything is going on.

  I agree, sounds like the two issues could be related. He may have a respiratory or dental problem. It may be that when he is excited that he is having trouble breathing and holds his mouth funny. I know some rabbits honk or make odd sounds…grunting and so forth. I would try to capture him doing both on video and take him to a vet with the video in case he doesnt do it while in the office.

  He’s had a doctor visit and everything was fine. He didn’t smile in office of course. I’ve got several pics of him smiling. I can’t upload from my cell but I’ll try tomorrow. I found anther forum where a bunny had the identical problem. Smiling and breathing weird when happy. They were told it was fine, and that if it did that sitting or laying down then that was a cause for concern. I’ll have to capture him doing it and see what his vet says.

  maybe he is just honking. have you looked up youtube videos of rabbits grunting, honking or growling? you might come across something similar to what he is doing. but i would ask a vet just to be safe. if he wasn’t always doing it, maybe a problem developed. it could have started off w/ the smiling and now he’s breathing funny too. or maybe they arent even related. i know when humans get excited or stressed they are more prone to asthma or breathing issues, so it could go hand in hand if he is doing it while running around or playing. if you could post pics/videos here somebody could probably give you a better opinion in the mean time.

  I wonder if he’s honking too? I would think with asthma he’d have a hard time catching his breath. Love to see his smiling pictures – how cute that must be.

  I found some videos of bunny asthma online and that doens’t look like what Gus has. He doesn’t jerk around or anything like that as if he’s having an “attak”. I saw several bunny honking videos on YouTube as well. Doesn’t quite sound like what he does either, but then again, each bunny had a different sounding “honk” to me! lol So I’m not sure if I’d recognize it if that’s waht it was.
  
  I didn’t have time today but tomorrow I’m off and I”ll try to capture a video of him doing it and upload it. I did snag a few pics of it tho!
  
  I was watching Frasier in bed and he decided he wanted some loving. I started petting his head and the smile immediately broke out!
  
  And here he is cuddling with my dad and grinning like a fool!
  
  He adores cuddling and being loved on. He always breaks out into a big grin, then his grin gets so big his teeth seperate and you can see a noticable gap inbetween his top and bottom teeth. Then usually his tongue starts sneaking out. He begins clicking and then eventually the funny breathing and noises start. It’s actually really adorable but I was just worried that it was an asthma attak. SInce he doesn’t jerk around durring it or anything I’m kind of leaning more towards the honking thing now.
  
  Like I said, I don’t work tomorrow so I’ll try to shoot a video of him doing it and upload it so you guys can see and let me know if thats what you think it is!
