Sadly i lost my beautiful bunny this month on 1/4/13 She got very sick and they found lesions in her body and couldn’t be saved. It has been such a difficult loss and i’m currently looking for more bunnies to have since she was my only one, i am very lonely. I would like to find 2 baby mini rex black otters, prefer a boy and girl but i’m open to the sexes and with only one being a black otter. I’ve contacted several local places (San Diego, CA) and haven’t had much luck. Does anyone know where i can find my future bunnies?

I would suggest you adopt an altered pair from the San Diego House Rabbit Society – here is a link to their website:

Keep an open mind about breed as well – it’s not as important as the individual rabbits.  All of these rabbits will be altered already as well.

Hey there — I have to agree with Sarita. You should definitely be open to individual rabbits as not look so much as a breed. Every rabbit has a much different personality. And you should look at a variety and then see which ones you adore best. When you find the perfect right, I bet it will be hard for you to say no! Even if it’s not the specific breed you were looking for.

Not long ago, a mini-Rex from our local Humane Society stole my heart (after I said I wasn’t sure about wanting a mini-Rex). She was not only adorable but everything I was looking for in a rabbit. Sadly, she was snatched up and adopted before I even had time to think about adopting her. You should go in with an open mind and see which little love-bug steals your heart!

Also, if you’re looking for a male and female, I would deter away from looking for babies and go for Young. Young enough to be considered young but old enough to be neutered/spayed. Babies are a lot of work before they are neutered/spayed and even for up to a month, or longer, after the neuter since they still have raging hormones.

All rabbits are completely different and instead of looking for a breed you should be looking at their personalities. What if you find the breed you want, but you bring them home, and they’re not friendly at all, note that I’m not saying that unfriendly rabbits are bad, just not what most look for. Many people are more reluctant to adopt large rabbits because it doesn’t fit their typical idea of ‘cute widdle bunnies’, but big rabbits tend to be more laidback and better with children. An example of this would be two rabbits at my local shelter, one is a ten pound bunny whose a little on the skittish side, but is very sweet and loving and the other one is four pounds and has cage aggression problems and tends to nip. Despite this the ten pound rabbit has not attracted anyone’s interest and the four pound rabbit has been on hold at least four times. People like her because she’s small and has very unique coloring, but shy away when they realize she has ‘issues’, if they put the larger rabbit on hold they would have no problems with aggression, but they never look past how large she is.

              Just some food for thought

I’m sorry for your loss Karizma. That was also the day I said goodbye to one of my rabbits. I’m guessing it still feels like yesterday for you?

I would suggest just going in and visiting the rabbits at the shelters at this stage. They will benefit from the interaction and it could help you in your grief also. Rabbits have a way of making one smile.

Meanwhile, have you tried using the Petfinder site? I find that shelters often mis label the breeds. By selecting “all breeds” for your area, you’re less likely to miss anybun.

Thank you everyone for the sugguestions. I’m completely open to shelter adoption and all breeds but my mom really wants another otter rex like “our boo” I will keep looking and hope to adopt soon! My house is far too lonely without the pitter patter of bunny paws, bunny races and binkies!! R.I.P Boxxy
