Hello bunny moms! So im planning on getting my rabbits spayed within the next couple of weeks! As you may know from some of my previous posts, I had a lot of trouble getting them to warm up to me! 5 month’s later now, they come running to me when i open the door to their room. They’re so sweet but are still a little skittish. I was wondering if the surgery might change their personality? They also have a HORRIBLE  pee smell will the surgery help this? And if you have any pre /post care tips for surgery that, would help a lot! Thanks for your help!

The surgery will calm them down and reduce the odor

Just make sure you have lots of their favorite veggies on hand for after the spay. They will be lethargic and probably wont want to eat much. As for changing personality, I personally did not experience this. If anything, my female became sweeter and calmer. Good luck!

              Hey Layla,

My female also became calmer. She is not so skittish anymore but is still very cautious of new things. The horrible urine smell will also tone down quite a bit.

As for post-spay, make sure to ask your vet for pain meds. Even if they say to just call back if you need them, tell them you would like some any ways. We gave them to my girl for 5 days after her spay to help with any pain she was having. She will definitely be lethargic and probably sit in a corner of her area and look completely broken and depressed. My girl looked so miserable that I burst into tears. LOL! So prepare for her to be miserable. Have her favorite veggie on hand to help stimulate her to eat. Or even treats. You want to get anything in her as soon as you can. If she has levels in her area take them down so she can’t have access to jump up and down and possibly tear her stitches. And make sure you keep her in a confined area so she can’t run and jump. I also got a dog stuffed animal for my bun to cuddle up against while she healed. She learned to love her stuffed animal and I think it really helped her heal.

I think any personality changes will be positive. Spaying usually makes buns calmer and cleaner.

As for post spay, be prepared to feel guilty! They usually come home looking pretty pathetic but in a couple of days, they are usually perky and eating normally again. Poos might be a little abnormal for a couple of days as well.

Make sure to check the incision everyday for swelling, tears or redness.
