  I took my little guy in for a vet check up today, and he is all set to get neutered! My vet has the end of January and all of February off for vacation, so he wanted me to get in as soon as possible. Which is great because I thought that I was going to have to wait until end of Jan. beginning of Feb. The checkup went good too. He weighs 2.5lbs, so he’s a little peanut. No ear problems, no eye problems. He’s a happy, healthy little bunny! He HATED being at the vet though. He was very upset and very stressed and they had a hard time getting him onto the table, the squirmy little bugger! And then, he peed all over the floor. :/ But, he is fine now. I’ll give him extra loving!
  
  He gave me an estimate and told me a little bit about the procedure. Friday morning, he will be (finally!) neutered!!!! I’m very excited because I cannot wait anymore to bond him with the girls. A month after, of course. He just wants to hang out with Sophie and Gretel so bad, so I’m really excited to start the bonding process after he is healed and all his manly hormones are gone! Anyways, since it is so close, I was wondering if there are any after care tips that you guys could give me? I’m sure my vet will give me a few things to do, but I figured I would pop on here and ask in case there was anything I could prepare beforehand. I know that male recovery isn’t nearly as bad as female recovery, but I haven’t been there for any of my bunnies being fixed so I’m still a little nervous. So any tips would be much appreciated, .

  Congrats! Are your females spayed? Remember that males can still have viable sperm after the operation, so it is recommended to keep males away from intact females for at least 30 days post-neuter. Even if your females are spayed, it would be good to keep them apart for a little bit so that he doesn’t get excited and re-open the fresh wound. You’re right that recovery for males is easier than females, since the operation isn’t as invasive. If his home usually has levels, take them out for a few days so that he will not tear the wound trying to jump up and down. It’s normal for him to be lethargic or not as interested in food right after coming home, but if he hasn’t eaten by the second day this is cause for concern and needs a vet visit.

  Make sure your vet sends him home with pain meds. Most boys are back to normal quite soon after a neuter. Some boys will lick aggressively at the neuter site, so keep an eye out for this. Make sure to check the neuter area every day for redness, swelling or tearing.

  The girls are both spayed. I know about the lingering hormones and sperm so I am definitely waiting a month. I’m just excited because I thought I was going to have to wait to bond them until Spring but the neuter is happening sooner than I thought! He does have a level in his cage so I will take that out. Is it okay that he has pelleted litter? I thought that I read somewhere that you are supposed to use newspaper litter during recovery. Or am I making that up? Haha! The vet gave me a list of things that they are charging me for and Metacam is on there, . I also have some Critical Care from one of my girls, just in case he needs it.

  The only thing really that my vet advised when my boy was neutered was not to use sawdust or shavings whilst he was healing as it can get stuck in the wound (I dont use them anyway so it wasn’t a problem!)
  My boy was back to normal the same evening and althought I checked the neuter site everyday, I couldn’t even see the wound at all! Even when he first came home.

  Everything went well with the surgery. He’s a little groggy and just relaxing, which is something he seems to never do, haha! He’s already eating bits here and there. He had some romaine right after the surgery and then I got him to take a couple craisins. He is now munching on some romaine again. He’s normally able to come out of his cage 24/7, but I did close him in for the night so he can just relax and recuperate. I have pain meds that I have to give him once a day, so that should be a blast for tomorrow, lol. All in all, he seems to be doing well!
