I play several ‘adoptables’ sites, (Chicken Smoothie, Dragon Cave, etc.) I am on the respective sites’ forums and often have great conversations with the people there. I am often on the lookout for rabbit related topic, so that I may offer any help I can give. Anyway I have been posting on one topic in reply to questions people have asked. Someone asked a question the other day about if it would be alright to keep their rabbit outdoors in a child’s playhouse (her description, not quite sure what she meant). I posted and told her (not in a rude way at all!) that rabbits do much better indoors and listed some reasons why. Almost instantly five people jumped on my post and started saying how rabbits ‘thrive’ outdoors and how happy their outdoor rabbits are. I responded politely and said how many hutches that are on the market do not allow a rabbit proper housing because of the space rabbits need. I explained how rabbits need room to take several hops without hitting their nose and how they need to be able to stand up properly and look around. Someone (a breeder) responded and told me how their rabbits are very happy in their two feet by two feet hutches. They proceeded to tell me how they do not allow their rabbits out of cage time because when she use to let them run around her garden they would ‘crash into things and die’. So her rabbits are in a two feet by two feet cage 24/7, I told her that most breeders I know do keep their rabbits in larger spaces then that and do allow them out of cage time. I mentioned how rabbits need time to run around to exercise and how much pent-up energy they probably have. She told me ‘that this is really all a matter of opinion really.’ and that they burn off energy by running in circles in their cage.

I am honestly horrified  I am not sure how others would have reacted and what your opinions might be, but I don’t think rabbits should be kept in that tiny of a cage 24/7. I did not come into the thread shouting ‘down with breeders’ or ‘death to those who keep their rabbits outdoors’. Instead I offered up advice to someone that I have done enough research on to back up and was instantly told how wrong I was. I do my best to not attack or berate people, as that is not a good way to teach, I listed my points in a way that I would talk to any adult: politely and with information backed up with facts. I’m not sure if I’m in the wrong or not, so what would you have done?

          I think you did good.

People on those sites you are speaking of probably some are breeders.  Some of those sites you are gona get flack no matter what you do or how politely you word things.

There are groups on Yahoo I used to go on and fight fight fight.  So I left those.   Seems sometimes that people just don’t want to learn.  And refuse to learn no matter what you do.

Shiznits man these people are meaaan!! It’s not matter of opinion it’s factual that indoor bunnies live longer than outdoor ones like not for every single bunny on the earth but majority of outdoor ones do get hijacked by foxes or frozen to death :'(
Did they not read the research you linked them at all? Everyone just thinks they’re the worlds best bun mother and it’s like come on now… you should have asked them(yes the bunny owner) if they would rather a large space to run around freely.. or a small space where they could barely move 😐

I find sooo many popsts on yahoo answers (i google questions and they come up) with horrendous answers! It’s ridiculous that people give other people advice that could literally harm their bunny! Like I read something about their bunny sneezing or nose was running and people were like “aww your bunny has a cold give it a blanket” 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 Seriously what?!!?

Lots of forums are harsh and there are ‘gangs’ of people who really go after people with different views. Additionally rabbit breeders (in my experience) are just about the worst pet owners going (space is a consideration in terms of money not quality of life etc). Anyways I won’t turn this into a breeder-vent, but the breeder and other people who do not keep animals the way we do (hey-we’re all here because we want the best for our pets!) obviously ganged together and were quite rude to you.

My advice- let it go. You won’t change their mind-they are obviously ok with what we would consider neglect. If you want to continue to hang out on the forum do so-or leave. You can also use an alert or contact method-there has to be moderators and they may care about obnoxious behaviour on their site. They may not, but worth a try.

So try to breath and let it go; not only are their terrible pet owners out there, but people are abusive and rude on the internet, way more so then they ever would be in public-they may not have ever said anything like that verbally to you; not an excuse at all, just a consideration that you have to ignore people who are rude online

Sorry Kokaneeandkahlua, I certainly don’t want to turn this into a rant thred, but I can see how it might become one. I will be alerting the moderators to their posts and I am not persuing the matter with them. I have made my points and hopefully I’ll at least be the nagging thought in the back of their head, but if I’m not, then I’m not.

@Beccaberry the problem seems to be largely based off of misinformation on sites like yahoo answers. People just don’t seem to understand how delicate rabbits are.
I did ask them which they might prefer and they chose to ignore that in favor of telling me how they ‘know how to take care of their rabbits!’ And I do understand how people naturally get defensive if they feel like you’re implying neglect or abuse, but I wish that they’d consider what I said. As I said above though, at least the thought is now with them, and it may encourage them to think differently.

Think of all the people who grew up in 4H and stuff. They were taught that rabbits can be housed in a hutch outdoors, just like all the other “farm animals”.

People do things certain ways and never have (in their opinion) an adverse reaction, so they continue to do things the way they always have. How many people have lost a rabbit to “natural causes” at 4 years old and just thought “She lived a long, happy life!” never realizing that her life span would have been more than double that had they bothered to learn that females must be spayed to prevent reproductive cancer? The media portrays rabbits as living happily in an outdoor hutch with nothing but a carrot to nibble on. 4H programs portray them as livestock to be used for breeding and show. Pet stores sell inadequate (and sometimes dangerous) products, cages, and food. The information out there is ridiculous.

With that said, I decided a long time ago that I’m not interested in investing my time and energy in people who are not willing to make an effort to improve the lives of their pets. They will fight on every topic. I used to go to different sites, but I ended up frustrated and upset thinking about the rabbits I wasn’t helping. I devote my time to people on BB who DO want the best for their buns.

I think you showed remarkable restraint… Personally I would have inserted several choice phrases guaranteed to make a stevedore blush and told the breeder what to do with her two sq ft hutches after filling the thread with HRS links and other info to make them look like complete heartless morons.
You did good… Small victories is all we can ask for. If you have swayed the thinking of one person that is one more bun that will have a better life.

Take heart, Snowy. Although some folks may have gotten defensive, you may have planted a seed of doubt that what they’re doing is right. They may go check out any links you provided; initially to “prove” that your info was wrong, but some of it may yet sink in. You also gave info to lurkers who were on the fence and didn’t want to jump into the fray and get yelled at by the pro-outdoors set. Knowledge has an uncomfortable habit of sneaking on over and sinking in, no matter how obstinate people are or how many internal walls they erect to keep it out.

                            Thanks guys

I do email 4H leaders when I see their rabbits in bad conditions at events and make sure pet stores are aware of how their products effect rabbits. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and most pet stores are going to stock what sells, though the last Petco customer service rep I filed a complaint with actually forwarded my complaints to the companies that were selling yogurt treats, tiny cages, etc.

I am in 4H and I brought daisy to our tractor parade and she really liked it, she was in a 2 by 3 cage,( but she was 5 pounds, and not as big as she is now) she made friends with the chickens in the cage next to herLOL. But this year I will be doing training, amd in june I will be going to our 4H state compition.

Baby-Daisy are things different in 4H now? When I was a kid, the rabbits were treated like livestock and they only cared about a rabbit being “show quality”. The rabbits would be kept in a hot barn in tiny cages for the shows. Maybe things are different now, I don’t know.

Well we can show them, I will but I will just be showing for fun. We live in a small town with only 7-13 ppl in our 4H group, and I have not seen or experienced people with their bunnies in small cages, the cages we use are probably 2 by 2 but they are nly in t fora MAX 5 hours probably less the cages are reall nice.
Sorry I meant only in it for a max of 5 hours

I sure not all 4H groups are like this, but the one near me is atrocious! The rabbits sit in tiny cages where they can’t turn around during shows and in events the rabbits are housed on wire with no bedding  The 4H leader has told me that ‘they know how to take care of their rabbits’ and was not very responsive.
