This morning, as my bun was chewing on her colorful wooden toys, I started to wonder if she could even see the colors, or if it was just for our benefit. So, I found this article about bunny eye sight and thought it was super interesting, so I thought I would share!
Its really short, and easy to read. I highly recommend it. Though now I just have more questions about the evolution of rabbits.

Thanks so much for posting the link! That was very interesting, indeed, and it’s always nice to find out more about our wily buns. ![]()
Isn’t it neat? I think it’s really interesting how although they can’t see what’s directly under them, they’re so good at distinguishing things with just their lips and nose.
The other day my friends were giving me crap about having a pet bunny, how they’re not very smart and things like that. I think that they thought it was like having a hamster (not that there’s anything wrong with hamsters) or something. Then I got to surprise them how much personality and intelligence rabbits had. Now, they think that rabbits are a little less lame. The article went a long way in explaining that they can recognize you from others.
Oh! And I just noticed, Quantum I’m from Washington too! PNW for the win
Is that why the Teach N Treat is green and blue?
This is an awesome post, Allophenic!
I really enjoyed reading that and sent it on to my boyfriend! Who I’m sure will also enjoy it… We always love learning new things about our little hoppies.
And btw, you’re not the only one! A majority of my friends are also completely ignorant about our little furballs… Hearing the “bunny stew” joke gets old around hearing it every time someone sees your bunny. Or sees a picture…
My father in law just jokes about getting out the pellet gun. They had some rabbits outside that were eating the bird seed. They were so cute. He seemed to think it was funny when I got upset when he said he needed to shoot them.
Woot, woot! Washingtonianbuns for the win!
And, oh, LBJ10!
I think the rabbit posse needs to ride on over and have a chat with him. I get, “Oh, did you name him “Dinner”?” “Oh! He’s about pan-sized…” all the time. The people that say those things are all dog-lovers, so I just look at them and say, “My husband was stationed in the Philippines and tried dog. He said it was really very good…” After they climb back down off the ceiling, most of them get the point. ![]()
Yeah, the eating my bunny jokes do get tiring. I was also wondering, does anyone know the purpose of bunny’s tails? I’m just curious, like maybe its left over from some previous form?
Hm. Interesting. My buns can’t find food under their noses, in front of their faces, behind them or even if they are standing midplate with it under their feet though. Hehe
Haha Peppy does have some trouble finding food under her nose sometimes. However, I’ve noticed that if I pinch a pellet between my fingers, she very gingerly picks it out of my fingers taking care not to bite me. I wonder how she can tell exactly where the food is as opposed to my fingers!
Thanks for posting. Interesting read. I’ve often wondered about bunny “Night vision”. So I’m assuming by this article, they can’t see in total darkness. It just mentions “low light”.
I don’t know how true it is, Allo, but I’ve read that rabbit tails evolved small and foofy because longer tails would become entangled in undergrowth as well as giving a pursuing predator something to latch onto. A stubby tail still allows all sorts of social signals without the dangers a longer one would provide. I know that Nuralagus rex, that giant fossil bun, has a stubby little tail so it’s been around a while.
We have discussed tails on here before. The tail can be used to signal others. It can also dazzle a predator that is chasing it since the predator is so focused on the white spot in front of them. When the rabbit finally ducks for cover, the white spot disappears and the predator is disoriented for a second.
Interesting!

Would make sense. My two have a night light cause I noticed they preferred the low light since it gets really dark in their room. And when we lost power for a while, Powder ended up running into a door until I turned a flashlight on and left it on for the animals.
I guess that means Foo’s favorite color isn’t red, even though she digs at my red clothes, her red blankies, etc. Lol. I’m glad she is able to distinguish me from other people though.
Ahhh yes when the electricity popped off one nite Cotton went nuts running around the room bumping into things. I got the flash light as fast as I could and caught him and calmed him. Then he was fine.
Next time it happened he panicked a little and I held him and had the flashlight. The 3rd time he was just fine he was waiting for me to get the flashlight lol.
I guess the sudden noise and not being able to see all of a sudden was real scary for him. Scary for me too when he runs into things.
Thats true about them being able to gently pick food from our fingers. Cotton isn’t so gentle with craisins tho. Chomp
Oh. My. God.
This could totally be why sometimes I hear big crashes late at night from the bunny cage. Now I feel like Cruella Devil for leaving my buns in the dark!!!
LBJ, that tail thing is really cool! I always wondered why my bunnies tail underneath was a different color!
Don’t worry tanlover, Ive always done the same thing!… I’m thinking about getting a nightlight for their room now, but I don’t know if they will just rip it out of the socket…. ![]()
Ha! They probably will! Lmao… we’re so paranoid all our showing sockets have those baby things in the socket so no paws can get electrocuted.
