  I bought apple tree twigs for my rabbit from the pet store, but I got to thinking about it. We actually have a green apple tree in our yard. Could i just get twigs off it and give them to my rabbit?

  Of course you can! Our rabbits actually like it better because they’re longer and they aren’t perfectly smooth.

  Yay! That’s good news to hear!! I’m a firm believer that anything natural is better than store bought lol. And no need to worry about pesticides, everything they grow on the farm is 100% organic.

  I read somewhere that apple twigs taken directly off the tree need to be boiled first. I wish I could remember what site it was but it was a rabbit specific site.

  According to the HRS, apple tree twigs can be eaten fresh from the tree. This is quoted from their section on toys and treats, regarding what is safe for bunnies:
  
  “Untreated wood, twigs and logs that have been aged for at least 3 months. Apple tree branches can be eaten fresh off the tree. Stay away from: cherry, peach, apricot, plum and redwood, which are all poisonous.”
  
  I’ve never heard of boiling apple tree twigs. I would rinse them off if cutting them fresh from the tree, just in case a bird had peed or pooped on them, then I would dry them off.

  That’s what I thought. Boiling them just sounded crazy to me because you’d think that would boil out all the flavor. My folks have a couple apple trees in their yard, so it looks like I’m gonna be getting some twigs for my boys too.

  I give my bun fresh-cut apple-twigs every day, he likes them a lot. Boiling the twigs seems like overkill.
