Yesterday morning while sprinting around the front yard for her walk Jenna suddenly sat down on the snow and refused to move. OH thought it was just gas but something in how she was presenting just screamed at me that it wasn’t bowel related.

Rushed her in on urgent care and Dr. says she’s hurting around the lumbar area on her spine. He felt with how she was acting yesterday that it’s a bad sprain but everything I’m reading indicates herniated disc brought on by years of jumping up on and down from places she shouldn’t have.

He says he’s never seen an injury like this in a four year old dog. But no xrays or sonogram taken.

She’s on metacam and bed rest. She’s peed a few times but hasn’t pooed since the night before last. He could feel wastes firming so I’m concerned she’s just too afraid of the pain to squat. She lifts her leg to pee fine though but really shouldn’t be doing even that much.

If she moves too quickly she squeaks and squeals pitifully. It’s gut wrenching. :'(

I am heartsick. This wee dog is everything to me, my dear bunnies and cats aside. I am scared to death the damage will worsen and she’ll need surgery or be paralyzed.

If she doesn’t poo soon I have to bring her back in. Could be very bad. We’ve given pumpkin and chicken to try and loosen her up. She gets another dose of metacam tonight (she’d had a .15ml dose this a.m. when she couldn’t move) and I worry that’s a lot for her poor tummy.

Can we please have some wonderful BB vibes? I’m so scared for her.

As if 2012 hasn’t been bad enough…this is just the capper. :'(

My dog hurt her back when she was 5 or 6. The vet said it was because she jumped up and down too much. She was notorious for doing full out belly flops off the couch though. She was given pain meds and the vet said we had to confine her to a crate. Moving around only made it worse, so we kept her in an open bar crate so she could see us. I felt horrible. All she wanted was to be with us. She eventually got better. My husband made her a ramp leading down the back step and a ramp for the couch. She uses them religiously.

Oh and for the pooping. The vet gave us a sling to use to support her while she went to the bathroom. Somehow it helped her be less afraid to go, I guess it took the pressure off her back. You can make one with a small towel (to go around her middle) and rope (for straps to hang on to so you don’t have to stoop).

Oh, no I’m so sorry! How frightening! Spine issues are so very painful for any living thing. It’s rough. Hopefully some good rest will help her heal. Since she is younger, hopefully she will be able to heal faster and recover quicker.

BIG BIG BIG HEALING VIBES FOR JENNA!!!!!

That’s a good idea LBJ, I’ll try that.
Glad to hear your pup got better. All Jenna ever wants is to be with me but while I have to do work around the house I can’t always be near her. So usually wherever I leave her she gets restless and then jumps down to follow me. I should’ve just left her cuddly cup on the floor so she didn’t have to go up or down.

                    Thanks BB and Roberta
She’s doing as well as can be expected but no poos yet. We need the infamous Binky Pooping Vibes!
Lolz…funny to be asking for those for a dog instead of a bunny. :-/

Oh Jenna! {{{vibes}}} on the way. The sling so she can toilet sounds like a great idea!

Excuse my ignorance but does ice help on these injuries?

Btw, how is Ebon getting on?

I’m so sorry Mimz. You certainly don’t need this. I’m offering up some huge (((((Get Better Jenna))))) vibes and big ****Bunny Hugs*** for you. I wish I could offer advice but I don’t have any experience in this. Just offering my love and support.

I’m certainly hoping 2013 is a much better year for us animal wise. My horse is in a bad way right now, still lame and I will have to get the vet out soon.

Keep us updated on wee little Jenna.

If you have any leftover turkey that’s a surefire way to loosen them up. I bet the medication and bed rest will put her right in no time. We’re all sending lots of vibes so she is going to be OK very soon *hugs*

Sending lots of vibes to Jenna!!

One of my dogs had a herniated disc 4 years ago, at 3, so try not to get too discouraged She was chasing after a ball in the backyard one minute, the next she was screaming and lost control of her bladder/bowels. It took my dog about 6 months to be back to normal, and only a week to be able to move on her own. From what I have read on it/our vet told us, that it is common for the next disc along the line to go, but if you make it past 6 months, you are usually in the clear. It’s been 4 years for us with no further issues. But I’m still really diligent about doing massage and physio stretches on her, she gets a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement and will be going on “mobility support” food when she hits her senior years.

Have you tried Laxatone yet, to get her pooping? That would be my next step, before talking to your vet about a motility drug. If you guys don’t have a sling, you can use a rolled up towel or sheet.

Please keep us updated, I’ll be thinking about you

Why was that? Is it better to do X-ray when swelling has gone down?

If you dont feel metacam is giving her relief, rimadyl might be the go.
Hopefully by now you are seeing some improvement in her.

                                  Thanks all.
She was feeling better enough this morning to want to play but still hasn’t pooed. Her tummy was making serious gurgling noises early at about six but they are less frequent now and she won’t take syringed water. Little brat jumoed about a foot and a half to a chair when my back was turned this morning. Then after her second wee walk has been immobile and uncomfy. Waiting on the vet for a call all day and furious because I’m shattered and don’t know what to do.
She’s slept on the bed in my arms for over an hour. She hasn’t eaten today and doesn’t want to. How will I get metacam in if she’s got nothing on her tum? If she can’t poo she won’t eat.
Despondent beyond words. And terrified. :'(
The last time one of our dogs couldn’t move his bowels he was put down. It was horrible.
                                  I can’t lose this dog. She’s my world. :'(

Do you think the reason she isn’t going is because she is in pain? Could the vet give her a shot to get her started on the pain relief? You might also want to try heat therapy. Just make sure whatever you use isn’t too hot. My dog has a hot water bottle that we used.

The vet finally called back and said to go ahead and give her the metacam. Eating or not. Luckily she took a bit of Cornish hen with it. And a bit of peanut butter.
I have an electric blanket on low and she’s laid out on the pillow next to me.
If only it weren’t cold out she could take her time to go potty.

                                          Thanks Pam
Well vibes are working because my wee baby finally went out at 2 a.m. and managed, surprisingly well, a b.m. I have never cried tears of relief or thanked God harder in my life. She is also peeing more which is good as dr. is keeping her on metacam for ten days and no activity for two weeks.
Today she is eating relatively well if not drinking much yet…my guess is she still hurts too much to lower that head plus she’s not a big water drinker, and her movements are getting more like her old self…stiff ones as she is still sore but at least her legs work and she can manage her bowels.
She is by no means out of the woods…back injuries can take six months to heal fully…and she’ll always have residual weakness because the back in most small breeds is vulnerable. But now I have even more reasons to spoil her.
One thing I think would be good is for her to drop a pound or two. She’s gained since summer and my old vet who left the practice said she shouldn’t go over six pounds…she weighs eight! 0_o
Thank you so much, everyone, for thinking of Jenna. BB vibes and prayers are the best! <3

I’m just catching up on this thread. Sending continued healing vibes for you and Jenna! 2 lbs is a large gain for a little dog and slimming down will definitely help her recover and prevent future injuries.
I know how scary it is when one of our furkids is sick. My older dog hurt her leg getting in the car a month ago. Screamed bloody murder, wouldn’t walk, held her leg up high, the works! It was horrible and I was a wreck for the first several days but now we are both adjusting to the new routine of me assisting her in and out of the car, no jumping on the bed, pain medicine as needed, and easy exercise aka no sprinting around yard like a crazypants.
Keep us posted on your little girl when you can.

I know that pain meds can make it difficult to go BM too.  It could have been unsure of the pain tho.
