A very poor situation needs our help. We were contacted by a woman who was left to care for 24 rabbits when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to a mental hospital. She was told to give the rabbits, who where left to roam the backyard, a loaf of bread(!) everyday as her mother-in-law had been doing. Every rabbit’s hips are protruding and it is obvious that they have lacked a healthy diet for some time. We visited the site December 26th. We managed to get them caged, fed, watered, and separated by sex. However, they really need permanent homes, medical care, and to be spayed & neutered. We had to make the tough decision to have one of the male rabbits humanely euthanized due to a severe upper respiratory infection, blood in the stool, and a very emaciated and weak appearance. Luckily, no other rabbits were showing signs of infection. Virtually impossible for us to walk away, we took four of the female rabbits back to the rescue with us leaving twelve rabbits at the property. These four are safe and are receiving the care they deserve but we could greatly use your help. Our ultimate goal would be to remove all the rabbits from this location but without fosters and adopters, we lack the room as well as the time and funds to help them all. Any help, big or small, is very much appreciated. We will continue to oversee the situation and ensure that the rabbits on the property are properly fed and watered but the housing situation is not quite adequate.
