I love VitaKraft’s Fresh World Bedding, I only have to change out the litter once a week. I don’t use a fleece at the bottom of the cage though.

One litter to avoid is the Oxbow Eco-Straw. Any liquid that touches that litter makes the litter disintegrate and it turns into clumps of wet sand. You’ll have to scoop out soiled litter from that everyday.

Wood stove pellets without the accelerator. One bag is 40 pounds and will cost $5 at the most.

I like the Carefresh natural. I also would recommend Yesterdays News pellets, or my favorite, Aspen Supreme pellets. For a shaving, only use Aspen shavings and do not use pine or unnamed ‘wood’ shavings which may contain pine. You can also try Feline Pine pellets if you still want something pine.

Is the fleece because it is a wire-bottomed cage? If not, they are fine on a smooth plastic, but you can use the fleece for a sleeping surface. Seagrass mattes are good on the bottom too. I just had those recommended to me by my vet when my bunny got a sore foot.

Wood Stove Pellets are a great litter that definitely doesn’t break the wallet. 50 lbs is no more than 5$, and that lasts a LONG time. As long as it’s chemical and accelerant free (be like us and ask like three different people just to be sure), it’s perfectly safe for them to ingest if your bunny is the type to chew/eat what’s in their box.

So far, we’ve used about 1/5 of it this week, but I would imagine that most people would use way less because we clean it a LOT – including just dumping the whole box – and it’s a large box on top of that. And even if you did clean/dump the box a lot and end up throwing away a bunch, it’s better than blowing through 10-15$ premium newspaper or pine litters in a week.

Also, unlike newspaper and some other litters/beddings, a lot of people (and myself) think that the pellets are really good with odor control. In general, it seems like Java’s pee has a very, very light odor overall, but still, we never smell ANYTHING with the pellets.

You can get the pellets at hardware stores, like Lowe’s or Home Depot. We use Douglas Fir, which I quadruple checked is a completely safe wood. I think that most woods used in pellets are supposed to be safe overall anyways just because of the way they’re treated. Always good to make sure, though.

I use the CareFresh and I LOVE it! Works sooo well for my buns and our needs. Also, I’m pretty sure I know what you mean by the cage has ridges on the bottom. My buns have these small little ridges and it doesn’t bother their feet in the least. They’re always laying all over it despite the rest of the cage being all carpet.

Now I use wood stove pellets because they’re cheap and I think they work almost as well as YN. The only downside I’ve seen is a bit of woody smell when wet, but for $7 for 40lbs I can deal with it.
