› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › The end of the world?
Basically, in class, we’re doing this project thing about the end of the world, and I need to survey people on their thoughts and views about the end of the world. I thought – heck, people are just going to survey citizens in our area. I’m going global
binky bunniers, what are your views? Is the world going to end? If yes, when? And how? And why?
This is just a general thing, don’t feel forced to answer!
Thanks for your time everyone, much appreciated!
My thoughts, for the “Mayan” end of the world this month? I think people will actually believe it’s ending, so they will be killing themselves and others, I believe that people will commit crimes they otherwise wouldn’t do, and the thought kinda scares me, so I do want to say to everyone to be careful on the first 2-3 days leading up to “the end of the world” and that day too. I don’t think the world will “end” until a good long time, way after all of us, our great grandchildren and their great grandchildren have passed. Because, seeing as the sun IS a star, it will have to die at some point, and when that happens it’s just gonna make a HUGE mess, but I’m sure by then humans will probably figure out a way to go to another planet to live.
That’s just my theory, though. ![]()
I haven’t paid too much attention to this whole thing… From what little I know, the Mayan calendar “runs out” on that day. But… every calendar runs out at some point. I really think that this isn’t anything to worry about. Every couple years, someone has some reason why they think everything is ending on such and such a date.
We’re all eventually going to go, whether it’s by natural causes, disease, an accident, or a larger tragedy (the recent US East Coast hurricane comes to mind). My personal belief is that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to dwell on this. If there is a global “thing” that happens, I would at least take comfort in knowing that I am going “with” my loved ones.
This totally freaked me out when I heard about it a few years ago. My husband reassured me. He’s done a lot of research on ancient calendars (just for fun, because he’s weird ) and the Mayan calender is just that: A calendar. It just happens to run really long, instead of our 12 month cycle. It couldn’t go on forever.
I think all this social media, movies, etc about the topic has really gotten things out of hand. I was just reading an article the other day about how Nasa scientists are telling everyone nothing is going to happen. The whole thing about the planets lining up and ending the world is just absurd according to them. They think it’s really sad how the media is scaring people, especially teenagers who are really taking this seriously.
I think if you did some research, both online and in hard cover books aka library, and in newspapers, you will find that Doomsday predictions are as old as mankind. A detailed examination of the presence of bunkers for survivalists dating back to the 1950s and before will show the link between those very active groups and individuals creating underground safe rooms with well stocked provisions and the new use of atomic weaponry. Sales of gas masks has probably increased with global threats of bio-warfare. And on and on. The calendar is yet another documented prediction of threats, as are the prophecies of Nostradamus. I would broaden my scope to describe the multitude of Doomsday predictors, along with their dates that have come and gone without the world ending, as a means to put it into historic perspective.
Otherwise, if they’re right, then don’t bother to finish the paper because you won’t be getting a final grade because….so go have fun instead. ![]()
P.S. Sammy said that bunnies’ plans for world domination do not include it ending.
i think the whole thing is just a big spiel for REM to plug another greatest hits album,
Thank you very much. Now that song is in my head. Get it out!
Life as we know it will end sometime, but I suspect the planet itself will continue on well past when we are gone. Until our sun explodes anyway. ![]()
my opinion is I do not believe it will end especially on THAT specified day. Only the good Lord above knows when that day will come, only him. This whole “d day 12/21” has gotten out of hand and I do agree there will be some folks out there acting nuts in the days leading up to the 21st. Me, I plan on renting some movies and hanging out in the house with my kids, furry ones included. ![]()
As the sun dies, it will eventually expand until it swallows up the earth. So basically, everything will burn up before the sun finally fizzles out. They said that would happen in a few billion years.
I think the whole Mayan thing is silly. What did people expect them to do? Make a calendar that went on indefinitely?
The Mayan calendar went thru all the 12 horoscopes. You know like Age of Aquarius etc. It doesn’t mean the world is going to end or anything.
Yes people have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning of time. The millerites come to mind. Oh and remember the ones that said may 21 or may 12 2012 riding around in their decorated vans. well guess what we are still here.
No one can truly predict when the earth will end. Only God knows. I don’t want to run around like chicken little when the apple fell and hit him on the head. OMG the sky is falling. The sky is falling.
There are these doomsday preppers on. I saw it a few times. Funny what ingenious things they come up with. But no I am not into that. I live my life one day at a time.
btw if the world does end I will have wasted $ on a new cell phone rofl. Like what would it matter anyway.Duh.
Oh and remember Y2K. Never happened. And the late great planet earth. 1986. Never happened.
The book of revelation The 666 was nero. And 666 is the number of man not a particular man. But mankind falling away from the faith.
All those plagues passed etc. We are still here. I think we will be here for some long time to come.
Hope this helps
Humans are going to destroy this planet long before the sun swallows it. Just my two cents.
And no, the world isn’t going to end on 12/21, there’s not ever going to be a rapture, etc.
The Mayan elders who are living explained their calendar ending simply means the world is supposed to enter a new age, not that anything will end, it is meant to be a new beginning. The age can be a golden age, or dark age, that is up to us. They just predicted a major change.
As for all the rapture predictions and such that have been going on since last year… I find it hilarious that people actually hired post rapture pet sitters etc. People honestly PAID someone for in the event that they are taken and their pets left behind, someone from the service will go take care of them. Now, what happens if the service people are also taken? *rollseyes* And rapture insurance etc.. makes me worry for our race. :p (Not that they believe it will happen, but that they fall for these scams)
Yeah, I’m doubting people will still be around by the time the sun dies. Even if people aren’t here though doesn’t mean life wouldn’t continue in some form.
Oh well, as long as we’re not all eating Soylent Green before the end.
Judging by the swarms of Christmas shoppers in the malls, I don’t think many people actually take it seriously. If I thought the world was going to end, I wouldn’t be waiting in line at Walmart this time of year to buy gifts. ![]()
I read that the mayan calendar did not take into account leap years, so this has run out some time ago already.
There has been a seemingly alarming number of suicides this year; Suicides generally aren’t in the media, so I’m not sure if this is above average or now just easily accessible knowledge. However I know personally three people who have committed suicide this year, two in the past two weeks. Could this end of the world crap have some affect? Adding to their stress? Adding to their reasons? I’m not sure.
My feelings? last year was the reckoning. Nostradamus predicted the end of the world like 123 times according to how often I hear about it. I recall being a kid and worry as it was big then that he predicted the world would end in 1993. There was also Y2K. I think it’s the alarmist media trying to get us to focus on crap, live in fear, to keep us complacent and occupied- to keep us from becoming knowledgeable about the real evil, the corporations, the tax breaks, the wars, the war crimes etc. Same old same old-upcoming apocalypse, celebrity scandal (K-stew) and celebrity pregnancy (royal pregnancy). We are so easy to control.
My thought about this, is that one day in december the myan calander ended. I am thinking that the person who was making it died, and no one knew what he was doing, and did not wanna mess it up, so it was not complet. And my teacher said, “Only the strongest can survive”. I thing our planet is strong, we are the only planet the our lord walked apon, and all the countries, went through wars and theye are still there so i believe… “We can survive anything!
I was also thinking that if the world was really going to end, there would not be alot of people buying Christmas Presents! LOL
Ah ok thank you! You’ve got my thinking about a lot of things that I didn’t really think about. We’re having class discussions and things in the first 20 minutes of the lesson and some of your ideas haven’t come up yet. Why would everyone be buying Christmas presents? And what about the suicides? And staying safe on those few days! Thanks everyone. You’ve been so much help! Feel free to keep commenting your thoughts though, ill keep jotting them down ![]()
Predictions of the world ending have been around ever since it started…it’s just that this one has somehow managed to build a pretty big pop culture presence. I doubt there are more believers this time around than there have been for past doomsdays…the media is just feeding into our public awareness of events that seem to be “proving” the prediction, or highlighting the actions of a few individuals that seem to be taking it seriously (suicides etc). On the other hand, more media presence and more exposure is probably just scaring more people who are prone to believe these kind of things, which is kind of unfortunate.
In the Western world, the calendar ends every year on the 31th of december – and then we get a new one 🙂 And the world doesn’t come to a end because our calenders only cover 356 days at a time.
The earth will explode in 6 (?) billion years, because of the sun, and that is so far what all experts agree on.

Pffft. I expect the Vogon roadworks will come to our neck of the woods waaaay
before then.

As far as I’m concerned, when we run out of chocolate and hair dressers, the world will have come to an end.
This topic totally reminds me of this cartoon! ![]()

I agree the world will not end, and I have yet to actually meet someone who does believe it. As Kokaneeandkahlua said, the mayan calander didn’t count for leap year. A quote on a photo about this says “There have been about 514 leap years since it was created in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, Today would be July 28, 2013. Also, the Mayan calander did not account for leap year so technically the world should have ended 7 months ago.”
Though sometimes I think about how the world is becoming and think it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if it ended this month lol.
About the doomsday prepares, I feel like the ones who are prepping for the end of the world is a little silly, because either way, if the world is destroyed, you can’t really avoid it if your on it. But a lot of the doomsday prepares are prepping for the end of the world as we know it, or for a government takeover (which personally, I could see happening) or…zombies
I think one was prepping for an economic collapse.
Some of them have some great survival ideas though, pretty interesting to watch.
Here is a funny for you. we have a station over here call the chiller it’s scary good what’s funny is on the 22 of e December we’re going to have the we survived movie day. Lol
Think chiller is trying to tell us something
Thr 21 they r having apocalypse day lol
I enjoyed the mauan joke too by the way.
I think we will nuke each other to death one day. Hope not
