Ever get a new pet but your stumped for names? Lets get a running thread of name ideas! This could be fun

I really like the name Oyster, and I imagine using it if I ever got a male black cat.

I also love the name Basil! I would love to use it on a brown lop rabbit one day

Why did you name your rabbits/dogs/cats/slug/whatever the way you did?

My cat Kiwi is named as such because her eyes were the color of kiwi fruits when I met her. Fiji is my snail’s name because she is an apple snail. My turtle’s name is Torti (Tore-tie) which is an inside joke. I named her before I got her. We said the plural of octopus is octopi, so why isn’t the plural of tortoise “Torti”? Our 16 year old selves though that was very funny.
My boyfriend named his cat Yuki because she was as white as snow when he got her.
Finn just came to me… It has no meaning, but it sounds like a rockstar’s name and he has a wonderful little mohawk going on

For some reason my husband will just start calling animals something and the name will stick (even if I don’t like it).
For example, he kept trying to call my cornsnake Corny. That is probably the one I fought the most. His name was actually Bazi.

I love getting to name a new pet.

My Bridge bunny, Stormy, was named that because his fur reminded me of the sky right after a thunder storm (dark grey and beige). Bindi Loo, I needed a name that worked for a boy or girl, since i didn’t know which he was when I named him. It’s kind of more girly, but I just love it. Loo got stuck on there somehow.

I couldn’t decide between half a dozen girl names for Olivia. I wanted to name her something pretty and feminine. My little niece chose the name “Olivia” out of the selection. She likes to brag to everyone about how she named her.

My horse Winnie was called Misty when I got her. I already had a cat named Mystee and there was a horse at my barn named Missy so it was just too much confusion. I remembered my sister mentioning how “Winnie” would be a nice name for a horse. When my horse was a baby, she would always do this really high-pitched Whinney, so I thought the name worked well.

My Bridge kitty I named “Nefera” because she was the most beautiful colour and pattern I had ever seen. Nefera is ancient egyptian for “Beautiful”. My cat Savana, was pet number 7 at the time. Ricky wanted to call her “Seven” but I didn’t like it so we settled on “Savana”.

I actually didn’t name my bunnies. They came to me already pre-named. Valentine came to the rescue around Valentines Day this year (I think it was this year, might have been last year) so that’s how she got her name. Rascal got his name because it really does fit his personality. He is really the little rascal! haha He is so silly. Binkies all the time. I think he is so happy he has a bunwife.

I named my dog Lucy because when she came to me (she was a stray and wondered up on my drive way) that song “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” was playing in my head. haha

My cats don’t really have any specific reason just names popped into our heads. Except my cat that is gone now. He was very special. His name was Lucky Blue. He was the only survivor of his litter. They got infested with fleas and all the kitties died except him. He was very special. He was a blue grey color, hence where the Blue came from in his name. I miss that cat. I got him for my 13th birthday. We went missing when I was 16 and I have never seen him since. We think he got hit by a car.

This is an interesting thread. I like to see how people come up with names. =P

                Teehee, what a fun topic

Well, when I first saw Chacha bun’s baby photo photo, I noticed that her fur was black. I had recently lost my Mom at the time, who was half Japanese, and wanted to do a little honor to my mom. I wanted this name to be fun, so I choose a food name and inquired with friends who speak Japanese to make sure that the name is correct.

This is my 3 year old “Koucha” aka Chacha bun.
Her name means “Black Tea” in Japanese.

Don’t mind her cranky face and fluffy cheeks in this photo, she just woke up

But yeah, when I take her to the shelter to let her pick out a friend, I’m likely going to be changing that name to a Japanese food name or something along the lines of a foreign food name. There is a follower of mine on Instagram that has a bunny named “Kabocha” which means pumpkin. Her bunny is orange just like a pumpkin

Ditto! The boyfriend will just start calling our pets a name, and if I don’t like it he just ignores me and starts using that name for that pet! I wanted Bosse to be called “Mons” (norwegian name), he had already decided he was gonna be called Bosse. I had never heard that name before but it grew on me to my discontent

Also when the guinea pigs arrived, he started calling them both “taco”..

There should’ve been a thread like this when we got our buns!

It took a couple days to narrow down the names, but since they were little mates we wanted to name them after famous brothers. In the end it came down to Groucho and Zeppo Marx. Groucho’s name didn’t fit him at the time but after a couple repeat visits of chronicle snuffles he’s quite the grouch when he wants to be.

I named my mom’s dog with an inside joke in mind which no one got until she was over a year old. She’s a beagle jack russel mix. Her name is Saddie, instead of the traditional spelling of Sadie, because you can’t have Saddie without ADD.

Yep, he just started calling our chinchilla Chinchi. So original. We had our chinchillas before the rabbits. I also had a hedgehog a long time ago. He just started calling him Fiddles. My husband said it was because the hedgehog fiddled around. I wasn’t particularly fond of either of those names, but they just stuck.

When we got the rabbits, he already had a name picked out for a boy bunny. Leopold. So we had to make sure we got a boy bunny. He wanted Leopold because it is Leopold Bunners. Instead of Leopold “Butters”. He likes to watch South Park. Wooly sort of came with his name since I got him from someone else when he was a baby. They had been calling him Mister Wooly. So that is his name. My husband has been trying to call him Sweaters though.

hahahah, svandis and LBJ your boyfriends/husbands are cracking me up with their own names!!! and yes, it’s definitely a guy thing!

I told mine he could name Finn. He said he didn’t care what I named him because he is going to call him Buns Buns…. and true to form he never refers to him as Finn, it’s always Buns Buns, or Big Buns, or Buns Face, etc.

LBJ, your hubby is right though. Fiddles is a good name for a hedgehog, I can totally see the fiddling around part. My hedgehog already came with a name, and the previous owners asked me not to change it, but my guy started calling her Huffapuff because she huffs and puffs when you try to pick her up and sure enough it’s stuck and now I’m calling her Huffapuff

BTW… Sweaters is an awesome name

I suppose it is kind of a cute name. He was a really nice hedgehog, but he only let me pick him up. He was friendly to other people though. He did kind of fiddle around. I think my husband mostly liked the way he kind of waddled when he walked.

Our buns are all named after the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team! Hahahaha. The boyfriend and I love hockey so it seemed the quickest way to be able to agree on something. First came Fleury (Marc-Andre Fleury) and then Sidney (Sidney Crosby) and then Tanger (LeTang) and last but not least, if we get the fourth bun from the breeder we are calling him Gino!

I didn’t have a name picked out for my bun when I got him. My guy friend wanted to name him Nidhogg for the mythical Norse dragon that gnaws at the roots of the World Tree, but it just didn’t fit. I finally named him Bean for a secondary character in Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card because human Bean is very small, smart, and brave. My little dwarf baby is all of those things!

All my roommates are guys though, so they’ve come up with variations. Beaner Wiener and Bean Soup are the most popular.
