I’m glad to hear that you’re planning on building a new indoor home for your rabbit! Instead of making something out of wood, maybe you can consider buying a puppy exercise pen or building a home out of organizational grids. Both these options are easier to clean than wood, and are not that expensive. You can find exercise pens at pet supply stores, or you can ask your parents about finding used ones online. They moved the thread so that others that have similar questions can find it.. Finding the right spot can sometimes be confusing. It’s in the right place now.
If you still incorporate wood the key thing to remember is “Untreated” the person at the hardware store should be able to tell you which woods are untreated. (some timber has been pretreated to prevent rot, borers and termites, this wood would be toxic) but honestly the Xpens and NIC grids are so much easier to manage.

I have an indoor rabbit hutch. It’s made from plywood, but I sealed it with a nontoxic sealant and then covered the floor with non-slip linoleum tiles. Any floor that is just wood will get ruined REALLY fast. Even if your bun is perfect in the litter box, even spilling water, etc will ruin the cage.

My sides are wood, but they haven’t chewed it at all.

For my walls, I used just “cage wire” that comes in a roll from Lowes.

One recommendation I have is to put it on castors! Wood gets heavy fast. I love being able to roll it around to vacuum behind, etc.

If you have any exposed wood, it’s important that it’s natural and untreated wood (which is much more expensive)

My cage is 28″ wide, 30″ tall, and 6′ long. Including the wood, tile, wheels, sealant, wire, etc. it was 185. but I also had to make use of my boyfriend since I can’t use power tools.

I like that I’ll be able to use this for much longer than by buns will last (so sad to think about) but it was a LOT of work and a pain in the BUTT. It would have been so much easier to just get an Xpen. But, I’m proud of it, it’s secure against kitty and puppy paws and it’ll last a long time.

Xpens are very lightweight but sturdy (they’re made to detain dogs so they have to be). They can be folded flat for storage or relocation. And if you get an xpen with a walk-through door, YOU can step inside to clean, feed, and change litterboxes. After having used xpens for years, I would not use anything else. They are also going to be relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of materials and your time.
