Last spring when I was treating Lolli for double ear infections, the vet gave me some ear cleaning solution.  I don’t use it because I am concerned about putting more liquid in her ears.   But she’s been scratching her ears again.  Does anyone know if cleaning solutions can leave moisture in the ear so that new infections start?  This might be a dumb worry, but I can’t afford more vet bills and I don’t want to do anything that will make things worse for Lolli.

First, I don’t know. I would hate to give you bad advice. That said, my instinct would be to soak a bit of the solution (not expired, right) onto a flat cotton swab (not a fuzzy cotton ball, but that could be OK too) and very, very gently wipe her ears out with the solution. It isn’t pouring a liquid in, just applying the med in a more controlled way. See if it gives her any relief. It no difference in an hour or 2, you can call your vet and ask if it’s OK to reapply the treatment again.

I can only relate my own experience with Bindi’s chronic infections but frequent cleaning (once or twice a week) seemed to exacerbate the infections. Once we stopped using the cleaning solution, they seemed to have calmed down. A lops ear is so dark and moist and adding any extra moisture creates an even better place for bacteria to grow. Also, the more you clean, the more wax the ears will create to protect themselves. Some products can dry out the ear but this can cause irritation which isn’t good either.

Like I said, this is just the opinion of my vet and I for Bindi’s case. Lolli’s might be different. I clean Bindi’s ears just with a Q-tip every few days. I just gently twist a Q-tip in his outer ear canal (very carefully!) and this takes out some of the excess gunk.

I think the best thing to do is just call the vet office and ask. It could be different for different solutions and if this is a different issue, the drops you have might not be indicated

Thanks for the replies. I think……since I’m worried I will just not use it. lol I have been cleaning/checking her ears with q-tips right at the openings and in her little ear folds since wax or gunk can build up in them. She has been fairly ok. I was just thinking maybe the cleaner would help but then I don’t want extra moisture left in her ears either. Catch-22 in a way. Or…I’m making it a catch-22. LOL

No, it’s def a catch 22! To clean or not to clean??? You don’t want the ear canal blocked but you don’t want moisture either.
