  Hey you guys were the first I thought of so maybe someone can help me here.
  
  My cousin had a bunny who just passed away a week ago. I just got a letter from her about it today and there are things in there that I would like to tell her but I don’t want to upset her more then she is now. Just a little back story I have in the past gave her print outs and info from this site and house bunny society about bunny care and the do’s and don’ts. She told me that her bunny didn’t like hay so she didn’t give him any and I told her to try different kinds which she didn’t. I told her that the seed sticks and treats like that are bad for bunnies and she still fed them to her bun etc. I even told her to join the forums and read up on things and I don’t think she ever did. I even told her about my bun’s ailments and treatments I had to do and stuff so after all that I would of thought she learned something
  
  Anyways..in the letter she said that her bunny was lethargic and didn’t eat for 2 days so she took him to the vet. The vet said that the bun’s temp was 95 degrees and it should of been 103 (I am not sure what a bun’s temp should be). The vet said the bun was in shock and started him on an IV. Also said later the vet would get x-rays and give him an antibiotic. The vet ended up taking the bun home overnight and the bun passed away at midnight The vet called her and said he MIGHT have had a blockage! I am thinking it was the seed sticks she kept feeding him and lack of hay. This has really upset me and I don’t know how to respond to her. Also she put that she is going to go to the Luv A Bun adoption fair and get another bun (a baby) or a pair.
  
  I really don’t know how to respond to her letter. Should I just say I am sorry for your loss of the bun or should I give her some more advice? I don’t want to be mean or anything, I just want her to be aware next time but she didn’t even listen to me the first time. I think she is the kind of person that always said “I never had a problem in the past”. Sorry this is so long but this has really upset me. Thanks for taking the time to read all of this

  Since it seems like shes not really taking your advice, I would probably just leave the situation alone. Unfortunately there are people out there that are irresponsible like that. Maybe she will come around and ask you for advice once she’s ready to listen.
  If you feel the need to reply to her, then perhaps you can mention what you thought it might have been so maybe (highly doubt) she’ll learn what not to do with her next bun. Anything else and it might just go in one ear and out the other. Poor bun.

  Ya I decided to just tell her im sorry for her loss and leave it at that. I just wish maybe someone else besides me would mention the seeds and no hay thing. I am surprised her vet didn’t say anything to her about it. My vet always asks what my bunny’s diet is when I bring him in. Thanks for the response

  Well this is a tough situation. I like that she’s going to an adoption event. Hopefully it is run by a reputable rescue that is good about education. I think I wouldn’t say anything unless she does get another bun. Then if I was you, I would get more pushy. You don’t want her to “accidentally” keep killing buns. You could always be like there was this person on the forum that bunny didn’t get hay and the necropsy showed that it died from (insert: blockage, etc cause of death). Even choked on a seed even if it’s a lie it’s better than her ignorance if you know what I am saying. Sounds like she has a good vet though. Hopefully she utilizes it sooner next time before it’s too late.

  She probably just decided to keep that information from him- probably having a hunch that what you were telling her was right all along?

  I would just send condolences – she obviously cared about him and the truth is, the vet doesn’t really know what the cause was (may be right but could not give a definitive answer). It’s good she wants to adopt and I’m sure the rescue will help her with caring for the new rabbit – sometimes it takes someone else to get people to understand other than their loved ones (don’t know why, but it does).

  Does your cousin live alone or with someone? I know it sounds kinda bad to go behind her back, but if someone lives with her (if I was in your place) I would give them all the info they needed to try and get them to push it as well – or at least to take the time to get hay and proper food to the new rabbit. For the rabbit’s sake I’d say it’d be worth a shot

  She is actually in her 50s and married. I live in another state otherwise I would be over there more often and would be easier for me to help out and sneak in some stuff I think her husband is in the same mind set as her too. If I had the extra money right now I would make a huge order from the store on here and have it sent to her after she got her new buns to show her what I mean. I think she was also giving her bun the pellets with the colorful crunchies in it too as I can remember. The only thing I know she took advice form me was feeding her bun cilantro and parsley. I just hope with the new buns someone else will give her some advice that will stick.

  I’m wondering… If she is going to adopt from a shelter, would they provide care sheets ? Can you look the shelter up online, then give your condolensces and say you looked at the shelter and congratulate her for making an excellent choice of adopting a homeless rabbit and point out the wonderful info they have on feeding and care ?
