So after Lola was sick last weekend I really got to thinking… she REALLY prefers the litter box outside of her cage to the one in her cage – to the point that when she was sick that was the way we ended up getting her to use the bathroom out of eating pumpkin. I never gave it much thought until now. Many mornings when I get up she is patiently waiting at the door of her cage – until she sees me and goes nutty – and as soon as I open her door she scrambles out of the cage and to her litter box in the corner of the living room like she’s been holding it all night. In fact, I’ve been noticing when I change her litter boxes – the next morning there will be NO pees or poops in the one in her cage and she is actually holding it until we let her out to use the other one. It seems like after about 24 hours she’ll start using the one in her cage a little bit but still really prefers to use the other one. Both the litter boxes are the exact same and are probably switched in place every time I change the litter – so I know it’s not a litter box preference.
Is this unhealthy? Does anyone else’s buns do this? Could this lead to issues (e.g. when she was sick and wouldn’t use the one)?
