Flaky skin after using Bob Martin, sure it's not mites!

  We have a 4 month old little black female bun called Pepperpot. We moved to a new house recently so thought we’d give all of our pets a flea treatment. We used Bob Martin’s Spot On for rabbits/guinea pigs on our 2 buns.
  
  Today, a couple of days after Pepperpot was treated, we noticed her itching a lot and looking very unsettled. When we checked her, we noticed her skin and fur full of flaky skin and little sore looking areas. The flakes are all pretty big and what with her being black they’re very visible.
  
  I’ve just done a bit of research on the web and the results keep coming back as fur mites but we think it could be a reaction to the Spot On.
  
  Is there any way we can know for sure it’s not mites? We’d ideally like to get her treated tonight so if we can tell for sure it is mites we can pop and get a treatment. Or, if any of your buns have had a similar reaction to a flea treatment there maybe something we can do to make her more comfortable until she can see a vet?
  
  Our other rabbit, Alfie, had the same treatment and spends all of his time with Pepperpot but his skin is completely clear. He’s itch free and settled.
  
  Any advice would be very much appreciated.

  I’m not sure what Bob Martin is, is it a flea shampoo? It sounds like a reaction to whatever the formula is. Was this something recommended by your vet? Have you seen fleas on the bunnies? With fleas, RX flea treatment is usually the best to eradicate the problem, both Advantage and Revolution are safe.

  I’ve never heard of Bob Martin’s Spot On. It sounds like Pepperpot had a bad reaction to it. Instead of trying a home remedy, that could possibly make the situation worse, the best thing is to get to a vet as quickly as possible. Since your post is from earlier this morning, hopefully she has been seen by a vet and is getting treatment. I hope that her itching and sores clear up very soon.

  I just did a search on this product and I see that several people posted about problems with their dogs and cats after using it. I didn’t see anything about rabbits. Some animals had allergic reactions involving the skin, others had severe reactions such as vomiting, foaming at the mouth, seizures, and worse.

  We were told by our vet that Revolution is the best to use for rabbits. Foo had fleas and ticks when we got her, and Revolution cleared them up super quickly. You do need to get it from a vet, but its super cheap, like $17 for what amounts to two treatments because we only gave her half of the dosage.

  Hi everyone!
  Bob Martin Spot On is a little pipette to use on buns and guineas to get rid of fleas, ticks and mites. We use the cat one on our cat and it’s always worked really well so we thought we’d try the rabbit one on our buns.
  Not sure why the time of my post was the morning, I actually posted early evening when the vets were closed.
  Anyways, I did a bit more research on the web after I posted and found a contact for the Bob Martin Company, I contacted them and they advised washing Pepperpot to get all signs of the treatment off because it is a tropical treatment it can sometimes cause bad reactions in different animals. So, we gave Pepper a little bath and kept her warm and dry afterwards and her skin has cleared up wonderfully. It’s still a bit sore around the neck area where the treatment was administered but we’re going to give that another little rinse later too.
  I called my vet who didn’t think there was a need to bring her in if the baths were working and advised to not try any flea treaments on her for a while, just to use a flea comb if needed.
  She didn’t have fleas in the first place it was just because we’d moved to a new home that had a lot of cats visiting it previously that we thought we’d give her some flea treatment as more of a preventative.
  
  So, Bob Martin Spot On is a no no from now on! It did work well on Alfie but I just don’t trust it anymore.
  
  Why is when buns hae something wrong with them, they are so much more chilled than their owners? I was a wreck worrying about her but she just wanted to play!
