Since your rabbit is very young, I thought I should tell you that the subject of intentionally breeding rabbits is strictly prohibited in this forum. We recommend that a pair of rabbits be spayed/neutered before bonding is attempted. This helps the problem of rabbit overpopulation. Also, unaltered rabbits would be more hormonal and therefore more likely to fight or injure each other. You should visit the “Bonding” section of the forums if you’d like to learn more about the struggle of bonding the comparatively tame altered rabbits.

Mini lops are a medium breed rabbit and adults usually weigh between 4 and 6 lbs. in adulthood. It is too early to tell if your rabbit is overweight. I don’t have experience with rabbits of his age, but 2 lbs. at 2.5 months old seems normal to me.

You do not need to worry about the size of the doe. As far as I know, size is not an issue in bonding. It has no effect on who is dominant in the relationship. It does not affect the likelihood of a successful bond.

equalsign made very good points…I agree that the size and weight for age seems fairly normal. I, too, encourage you to wait before you start looking for another bunny. Each rabbit has his or her own personality, and it’s a lot of fun to watch them grow, bond with them, and find out their little quirks…take the time to bond with your bunny while you wait for him to be old enough to neuter. After he is a little older, if you still think that you want to adopt a second bunny, size (and gender) does not matter .

Ditto the above. I just want to add that, after a month after you’ve had him neutered, you can take him on “bunny dates.” You bring him to a local shelter where he can meet other bunnies. What happens is that he will meet someone he might like to bond with, which is evident in their mutual behavior. You can learn about the personality of any bunny he seems to like. And, since he is neutered, you don’t have to limit him to meeting does. Several great bonds may happen between same gender bunnies who choose each other. Think Buddies, like Starsky and Hutch. (Although indoor, not hutch, is better.) Size of the bonded mate doesn’t matter to them if they want to bond.
