I read somewhere that in ‘bunnish’ language grooming is a high respect and denotes love. I noticed recently that Ollie won’t groom me at all. He LOVES to be petted, and will start pawing at me if I’m not giving him adequate attention.
Anyways, is it just something that will take time or is it an “I’m the alpha bunny thing and you are too beneath me to groom.” ?
I was just curious if this ever happened to anyone else…
Some bunnies groom humans, some don’t. My Mini-Rex, Stormy loves grooming me and my husband. He goes completely nuts and totally wets your face with kisses. He hasn’t been doing it lately, though, as he’s been unwell.
I miss my Storm kisses. Funny thing is, he will groom us and stuffed bunnies but not his bunny buddy, Bindi. Bindi will groom Stormy but not us humans. Olivia doesn’t groom humans either. We are totally beneath her mightiness. It just depends on the bunny.
Foo will groom us, but only if we are wearing clothes. She’ll lick our legs and arms and shirts if we are petting her, and she’ll sit on the couch and do the same thing, and she’ll lick our hair occasionally, but so far has not groomed our skin. She licked my hand once and was like “What? No Fur?? AHH!”
Belle grooms my jeans when I have them on and she licked my face once but she’s not done that since haha! Watch for your bunny grooming things around you while looking at you. I read that that can be them grooming ‘you’. See if they are looking at you while they groom an object beside you – that means they think they are grooming you
. Belle does that more than she grooms me.
I can’t say if it will take time – plenty of buns never groom their people.
Hannah has never groomed us and doesn’t groom Otto much, so she’s just not into it. She prefers us to pet her.
Otto will lick the tip of my nose, but he only does it as a trick when bribed with food. He’s never groomed a person outside of that behavior though.
Generally, when two bunnies are first introduced, they don’t understand that they’re supposed to groom each other. I think it’s just something many bunnies don’t think of and since we can’t ask for it quite like another bunny can, they may never consider grooming us. Some really get into it though!
My bun will groom when she’s really happy. Or when she’s really wants to be put down–if I’m grooming her). Sometimes if something freaked her out she will frantically lick too. As if to say, ‘I’m giving you love so please make it stop’. I feel really bad when that happens. =/ She does love grooming the cats and being groomed by them. =]
my bun licks me ALL the time. Every time I pet him, he gives kisses. If I lie on the floor next to him he kisses any skin he can find.. arms, feet..face, nose, even my eyelides. if i open the fridge he circles my feet and licks them to ask for a treat. my husband claims he is just licking for the salt, but i guess they really are kisses if not all buns do it!
@chickennugget – Oh my goodness your bunny looks so cute!
I’m kind of relieved to hear that everyone else has had similar experiences with the grooming… Maybe my next bun will be a people groomer
Hoping to get Ollie a buddy for Christmas…. (it’s probably gonna be more for me than him though
@IsabellaRobyn – Ollie has groomed some of my laundry before… He tries to eat my flip flops but I don’t think that counts haha.
@L.P.T. – I hope your bun gets better soon! Nothing is worse than a sick baby.
@Foo Foo – That really made me laugh, Ollie licked me once or twice when I first got him, maybe me having no fur freaked him out too!
What about hair? Do any of ya’lls bunnies try to eat your hair?! Is that grooming or is that just their need to chew something. I have to keep my hair up a lot around Olls…
thank you, I think he is
My bun eats my hair.. not sure if it’s grooming or because it’s so similar in structure to hay?
My diva likes to groom me, her mister, and my clothing and blankets ![]()
Olivia will dig at my head if I’m on the floor and she catches me off guard. It hurts and she messes up my hair and sometimes she’ll grab a chunk in her teeth and try to pull it out. She’s just trying to make me look pretty, I guess.
GUYS GUYS!!! Something HUGE has happened!! Ollie just started grooming me tonight!!! He started to lick on my pants leg (while it was on), of course I started squealing and announcing that I was going to have to notify everyone! Squee! Excitement.

Excitement.YAY! haha I just laughed out loud for real! Hope your squeal didn’t scare him
My baby nugget startles easily while grooming me.. if i giggle he kinda jumps a little.
Ollie is verrrry laid back, which is great because I’m a very rambunctious individual sometimes who likes to sing and squeal. So he’s quite used to me thank goodness! Plus he lets my toddler lay her head on him. He’s so great with her. He’s so laid back that when I scold him for eating the carpet I have to get nose to nose with him and say “NO!” really loud for him to stop. Now he’s getting used to that method so he just looks at me sideways and just keeps going.
Stubborn head. I think I may be entering the terrible teens soon. ![]()
Only one of my bunnies will groom me. When Dunkin was a baby he used to groom my hand all the time. Now his kisses are few and far between, but still greatly appreciated. He just doesn’t want to get caught giving his human mom kisses now that he is older, lol. That is what I like to think anyway.
lol, like the pre-teen who wouldn’t be caught dead getting a kiss from their Mom!
Bandit would give my hand kisses when he was a few months old but now he doesn’t..same goes here preteen stage I guess lol..he loves to get petted but when I do pet him he licks the heck out of my sheets when he’s on my bed..to the point there is a large wet spot where he was licking..kinda cute but weird lol
mine has issues with carpet.. i may have to use that nose to nose technique!
My Roscoe has only been with us about 3 weeks, and he just started to groom me last week, and he has escalated from a little bit here and there to all the time. He seems to do it when he’s happiest and chillin. If he’s all stretched out and zoning out, I will crawl up to him and “groom” him by rubbing my nose and chin on his head and ears – then he will return the favor and groom me back.
He also has a thing for my daughter’s and my hair too – we both have long curly red hair, and I wear mine up mostly when I’m down on the floor with him, and he will groom my forehead and my hairline – sometimes pulling pieces out of my bun.
Last night things went a step further. I got home, let him out of his pen for run-rounds, and got down on the floor on my back with my head on a pillow. He climbed up on the pillow and started licking my cheek and ear. Then he ran off to do binkies and check in on the rest of the family. It was almost like he was saying “hello, Mommy.”
Binky grooms me a lot. He licks my face, hands, arms and clothes sometimes. But then I love just laying on the floor with him snuggled in my arms patting him. If i give him pats for a while and then stop he grooms me as if to say “okay! Your turn!”
Winnie will only lick my forehead and eat my hair lol. Its taken her a long time to settle with us though so I guess that might change yet, thought i’m grateful to get any kisses from her. She loves to try and lick my mouth though, the cheeky moo.

My bunny EATS my hair.
MY HAIR!
I didn’t need any more split ends.
She loves to do it while i’m sleeping, sneaky thing.
Sometimes, I’ll lie down on the rug and my bunny will hop up to me and lick my arms and hands. She’ll sometimes hop onto my back and play with my hair. I don’t know if I would classify this as grooming or not, but she sure does do it a lot. She’ll even rub her face against my toes and jump onto my back or over my legs. Before she does this, she makes occasional grunting noises and lick my arms.
Again, I don’t know if I’d consider this grooming, but by the descriptions of others, it quite possibly could be!
My buns both groom me. I actually got a second one to stop the first one licking me so constantly! But now I just have two that like to kiss and slobber on me instead. It is SO funny to be groomed by the male. He hasnt got front teeth and when he wants me to scratch harder he gums me, its so funny! He also drools a bit when he kisses. We have a bit of a kissy train at night, I scratch him and he kisses the female and she kisses me. The other day I was watching tv while petting and when I looked at them – the females’ head was completely wet! She had the funniest look on her face about it. The male sat there with his tongue hanging out of his head.
I love their beautiful bunny kisses.
