So, I’m looking on introducing a second rabbit into our home within the next year before I leave for college. I plan on adopting a female bun closer to Elvis’ age (6), rather than getting a baby. Is there any advice out there that can help prepare me for the bonding process, or some things I should expect to see while bonding them?

The journals on here are great – my shelter sends people here for advice.

I’m just starting so feel free to learn from my woes…

I don’t have any personal experience in bonding two rabbits. But I will tell you what the veteran rabbit owners suggest. Take your bun “bunny dating” so that way he can chose his mate and you don’t accidentally bring home a bun that he will hate. I know this isn’t necessarily about the bonding process but it does concern getting a second bun. I ear marked this thread because FrankieFlash asked a bunch of great questions that I know will help me for preparing for a second bun. Hope it helps you. https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/121017/Default.aspx

Thanks Skipper’s Mama! That thread was very informative and I’m certainly looking forward to getting Elvis a buddy!

Definitely find a rescue that can help you with bunny dates. Being able to meet potential buns and see who your bun gets along with is really helpful. Once you get your second bunny, you can post here with any issues and we will try to help you out.

Update: I’ve found a potential girlfriend for Elvis! We’re going to go see her the second weekend in November. She recently lost her mate and her owners don’t want to get another bunny. They’ve agreed to me bringing Elvis along to check her out. I was just wondering what signs I should be looking for when the two buns meet for the first time so I’ll know if it will be a good match. I’m going to arrange the meeting in a neutral area of their home so territorial behavior won’t be a factor.

I’ve never done bunny dating, but from what I know, ignoring is a pretty good sign. It means they don’t hate each other. Grooming, being relaxed (flopping or resting near the other bunny) are good signs. Negative signs would be attacking or severely stressed out bunnies. That doesn’t mean they can’t be bonded, it just might take more work. There may be some humping. This is normal. The bunny trying to gain dominance will often hump the other bunny.

Good luck and keep us updated!
