Last time, my bunnies got in a fight and I needed help with a pierced ear. Everything is okay with her and she got to a vet, but now I’ve got a new problem. I woke up this morning and my other bunny is holding his front leg up. I think he jumped off the couch at a height of around 26″. We don’t have an emergency vet for rabbits, so we can’t get him seen until tomorrow. What can I give him now for pain management? I’ve read about baby aspirin (the chewable kind?) and white willow bark supplements, but I’m not sure about a dose. I found this site: http://www.morfz.com/rx/drugcalc.html – but the amount seems rather high. He’s 4lbs10.5oz.
I think that for this particular problem you can see an emergency vet that treats any animal. They can prescribe pain medication for him at least until you can see your regular vet. That is what I would do.
I’ve found one and am going to call in a moment. I hate going to a vet I don’t know and trust, especially with an “exotic” pet. No idea why vets aren’t more knowledgeable about small mammals. They’re popular pets and need care just as much as the more popular pets. ![]()
I hope you feel comfortable with this vet – I know it’s stressful not knowing the vet but I think for something like pain management it is pretty important. Please keep us updated and if you have any concerns once you talk with the vet, please let us know so we can help you further.
I got a call back from the vet finally. He doesn’t think it’s necessary to see Jafar as an emergency because he’s eating, drinking, moving, grooming, and behaving normally. I can bring him in, but he said he probably wouldn’t send us home with any pain medications based on what I’ve said (he doesn’t think it’s broken). I’m still worried about pain because he definitely favors that leg, holding it up and grooming it. So I’ve got to wait until I can get to my regular vet tomorrow. I just hope he has appointments open, since both my husband and I have doctor’s appointments tomorrow and we’ve got to figure out how to fit everything in. I feel like such a bad bunny mom, having 2 problems so close together. I’m also sad because now I’ve got to delay bonding my two buns, since I don’t want to risk Jafar’s leg hurting more.
Don’t feel bad. Can you drop him off for the vet to see? That is what I always do with my rabbits…the vet can see my rabbits in between appointments and I can go to work. Call first thing in the morning and see about doing that.
That’s a great idea! Thank you so much! Such a simple solution, but I’ve never dropped off a pet, so it didn’t occur to me or my husband. I’ll get him there and I’ll feel good knowing he’s got a professional close by. He’s now putting it on the floor and using it for some support, so I don’t think it’s broken anymore. It makes me feel better about having to wait until the morning to get him care.
Thanks for the help! I’m feeling positive about him now. ![]()
Let them know it’s an emergency – most vets are fine with this and honestly if it’s an emergency and I know my vet is in – I just drop off without calling because I know my rabbit must be seen and they are always fine with this.
Please let us know what the vet says. Healing vibes for your little one and calming vibes for you – I’m glad you are feeling more positive :~)
Oh, I do make sure I do this first thing in the morning rather than the afternoon – it gives the vet more flexibility to fit your rabbit in and do any testing or x-rays needed. I’m usually on my way to work anyway and I’m there when they open since they open early for drop-offs.
Well, my poor buddy has been put through the wringer and I feel like an awful mommy. He’s okay and is recovering well from surgery.
Though my husband and I both checked him over thoroughly (or so we thought), it turns out his leg had somehow been bit. We’re still not sure how, but we have made absolutely certain neither bunny can get to the other so he is safe. But from what we deduced, they somehow had a fight (without the usual tufts of fur left around) and Zero Bunny bit Jafar in the leg very deep. We were able to see Jafar’s tendon, which gives me nightmares. He was walking better at night and appeared to be getting better. But the next day, his skin stopped sticking to where he was bit and we were able to find the wound that way. The vet saw him on Monday and did his surgery today (wound debriding and staples). He’s on antibiotics, probiotics, and a topical cream. The good news is the vet said he should recover with no problems.
Oh no poor Jafar :~( Sending healing vibes to your little Jafar – I hope he recovers quickly. It is so stressful when our rabbits are sick. Don’t feel awful, you are a very good mommy because you care so much and take such good care of your rabbits. These things happen all the time and the important thing is that you took him in and he got care.
Healing vibes for your little guy!

So sorry you are going through all this with your bunnies. You are obviously very good with them and it’s never something you can prevent, but take care of after it’s discovered. The bonding will be set back for a while, but you can start from an earlier stage when they’re ready and off the meds and just supervise until they reach a point of not fighting. Meanwhile, I’m sure Jafar will make a good recovery.
Poor BunBun. That must have been awful for him as well as you.
(((((Speedy Recovery Jafar)))))))
Thanks for all the healing wishes!
He’s been doing great, like he’s back to normal. It’s such a relief to see. He’s hopping, flopping, and eating like normal. He doesn’t like taking his medicine twice a day, but he’s pretty well behaved during it. I’m so happy we found out what was wrong and he got treated. It was well worth the vet bill – $793 – ouch! But it was the best money we spent this year. ![]()
That’s a great update :~) So glad he’s better.
Oh wow!!! Their fur is so thick, I can easily see how you wouldn’t have seen this injury. I’m so glad he’s recovering well!! That is a vet bill that needs framing!! ![]()
