I’ve found one and am going to call in a moment. I hate going to a vet I don’t know and trust, especially with an “exotic” pet. No idea why vets aren’t more knowledgeable about small mammals. They’re popular pets and need care just as much as the more popular pets.

I got a call back from the vet finally. He doesn’t think it’s necessary to see Jafar as an emergency because he’s eating, drinking, moving, grooming, and behaving normally. I can bring him in, but he said he probably wouldn’t send us home with any pain medications based on what I’ve said (he doesn’t think it’s broken). I’m still worried about pain because he definitely favors that leg, holding it up and grooming it. So I’ve got to wait until I can get to my regular vet tomorrow. I just hope he has appointments open, since both my husband and I have doctor’s appointments tomorrow and we’ve got to figure out how to fit everything in. I feel like such a bad bunny mom, having 2 problems so close together. I’m also sad because now I’ve got to delay bonding my two buns, since I don’t want to risk Jafar’s leg hurting more.

That’s a great idea! Thank you so much! Such a simple solution, but I’ve never dropped off a pet, so it didn’t occur to me or my husband. I’ll get him there and I’ll feel good knowing he’s got a professional close by. He’s now putting it on the floor and using it for some support, so I don’t think it’s broken anymore. It makes me feel better about having to wait until the morning to get him care.

Well, my poor buddy has been put through the wringer and I feel like an awful mommy. He’s okay and is recovering well from surgery.

Though my husband and I both checked him over thoroughly (or so we thought), it turns out his leg had somehow been bit. We’re still not sure how, but we have made absolutely certain neither bunny can get to the other so he is safe. But from what we deduced, they somehow had a fight (without the usual tufts of fur left around) and Zero Bunny bit Jafar in the leg very deep. We were able to see Jafar’s tendon, which gives me nightmares. He was walking better at night and appeared to be getting better. But the next day, his skin stopped sticking to where he was bit and we were able to find the wound that way. The vet saw him on Monday and did his surgery today (wound debriding and staples). He’s on antibiotics, probiotics, and a topical cream. The good news is the vet said he should recover with no problems.

He’s been doing great, like he’s back to normal. It’s such a relief to see. He’s hopping, flopping, and eating like normal. He doesn’t like taking his medicine twice a day, but he’s pretty well behaved during it. I’m so happy we found out what was wrong and he got treated. It was well worth the vet bill – $793 – ouch! But it was the best money we spent this year.
