I woke up this morning to find Vinny gone. The side of his hutch had been torn apart. Luckily he was still in my yard so I was able to catch him, but I later noticed some muddy little foot prints (raccoon or the neighborhood cat?). I took Vinny in my room so I could fix the hutch then I noticed some blood in Buns cage (buns lives upstairs while Vinny is down). He’s so scared he won’t even come near me. I checked Buns for any cuts but he’s as happy as could be. I’m worried about rabies or any other infections from his cut (which I couldn’t find). I guess they’re cage will be indoors at night from now on. Im just sad, couldn’t imagine what they went through last night.

Is there a way you can keep them inside all the time? They will be much safer and happier indoors 24/7 and they will not be subjected to this kind of dangers.

You cannot get rabies from a cut but you can from a bite as it is spread through infected saliva.

I thought rabbits were immune to rabies since we aren’t required to give them rabies shots.  I heard that some where.

yes inside the house is much safer and they get more attention that way.  As you pass by their cages you talk to them more.

Bunnytowne, they aren’t immune to it – there is not a rabies vaccination in the US that is made for rabbits. My vet said that a rabbit infected is most likely going to die from rabies if it is contracted.

Both of them do spend the majority of their time inside however they hate each other so it makes the play time rotation a little tough. I tried bonding them a while ago but it turned into a mess :/ now that I’ve graduated I have some more time at home and I’ll start the bonding again so they can both be inside together. Their hutch is usually covered but it’s been really hot lately so I’ve left it open. They’ll be indoors tonight and hopefully I’ll find out what animal is getting in my yard.

Another note- I don’t think it’s a cat. The metal on the side had literally been ripped off. I don’t think cats have that much strength

Poor buns! Idk where you live but snakes are another danger to them outside. And those guys cant get in the smallest hole. I’m glad you are bringing them in. If you want to give bonding another go, make a post in the bonding section and I’m sure people will help you!

*I edited a typo that was driving me nuts.

Is it possible for you to just do separate houses inside – whatever is out there sounds like it is very strong and dangerous for your rabbits. I don’t think I could leave my rabbits outside at night after an incident like this.

And yes, you can certainly post in the Bonding section as FrankieFlash suggested.

We have a covered patio in our yard, that’s where their cage is so its not out in the open. I think when the metal fell on the concrete the sound must of scared the animal away otherwise the animal could have easily went inside his cage after that. I think vinny just went for a joy ride out in my yard this morning because he wasn’t cut up or anything. Regardless I’ll be keeping them indoors and will try bonding them again.

Oh no poor bunnies! Unfortunately this can happen when they are outside  Are you planning on keeping them inside 24/7 now? Otherwise I’m afraid that whatever it was will come back.

Did you ever find the source of the blood? Perhaps it is from the animal that was trying to get into their hutch. That must have been so scary for your buns. I do hope you keep them inside, they might not be so lucky next time around.

Ive been looking at both of them and I can’t find any cuts so I thought it might be from the animal also. I’ll be keeping them indoors and get back to bonding the two
