So I’ve been thinking… what are your thoughts on showing rabbits? Have any of you ever done it or known anyone who has? My breeder shows hers A LOT and so two of my buns have been shown once already. (Both placed! *proud momma moment*
) Anyways, I used to show horses all the time and I absolutely LOVED it. (It’s been a year since I’ve been able to.
) So I wondering on everyones thoughts about showing? Do you know how you can get started? And the thoughts on the conditions and such at rabbit shows?
I really don’t want to put my buns in any danger at all or stress them out — our one bun, Tanger, though is energetic and LOVES people and new situations. So I know he’d be okay with it but I’m trying to get a feel of how it works, what happens, ect. I know it’s nothing like horse showing but I’m looking for a hobby and if this could be it — it’d be awesome!
No guarantees or anything on if I even want to do it — just a thought really.
I guess it depends. I’ve heard horror stories about the 4H barn at the fair. What kind of a show would it be? Some say you have to have intact “specimens”. Since most of us here have house bunnies, then obviously that wouldn’t be something we would do since our bunnies get spayed/neutered.
I believe it’s only for things such as 4H or for breeders at their breed shows to get ribbons or something. I don’t think it’s an actual hobby like rabbit hopping or jumping/agility.
Hmm, all true. Well — I read the rules on the Tan Rabbit shows for the National Club they had and they didn’t say anything on there about them having to be intact. But this could be true. No idea really. I was kind of iffy about it though since one of the National Rabbit Clubs I was looking up said in some places they require your rabbit to be “held” in with a bunch of the other rabbits until they had shown. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with that at all.
Probably wouldn’t be as entertaining as it sounds, and absolutely nothing like horses, but sometimes I used to show horses without riding — just based on commands and the way they stand and such so not sure if it would ever be as interesting or as fun as that. Just thought I’d get some opinions and see if anyone on here has ever done it.
I think showing horses is totally different as well. I think the idea of best in breed at rabbit shows is to say that your rabbit is Grand Champion something for breeding purposes rather than for just hobby or fun.
I tried getting my bunnies to jump over small things (without a harness or anything) by being led by a craisin just for fun, it’s funny and they are willing to do it but personally I wouldn’t ever try to make it a hobby or anything.
I love showing horses ![]()
After hearing about various nasty diseases going through shows, I’d be really nervous about showing.
Not to mention that His Fussiness would not appreciate being put into his carrier, driven however far and then getting shoved into one of those wee show cages. He would be Not Amused, to put it lightly.
AHAHAHAHAH. Being led by a craisin — HAHAHAH. That is TOO funnny. I need to try that now. My two boy buns go BONKERS over craisins. As soon as they see the bag (or hear it) I can’t get them off me for the next hour. My girl gets pretty riled up about getting them too but just excited nowhere near as crazy as the boys. That’s such a cute idea.
Quantum — yeah, stuff like that is what I’m really worried about. And for horses, it’s a fun experience for them too. So that’s make makes it sooooo much fun. Being one with the horse. The more I read/hear about it I don’t think it’s a bonding thing. Boo. One of my buns LOVES to jump. He’s constantly jumping up onto the kitchen chairs and then sniffing his way around the table. It’s adorable. We also made an enclosure for our bunny play area where they can roam and everythings bunny-proofed… we call it the Great Wall of Bun… it’s 2 NIC cubes high and the little brat jumped over it right into the arm of the chair right behind it. I was like uhhh. Really? So now our bun wall can’t be anywhere where there’s a slight elevation on the other side because he’ll def try and jump it.
Perhaps you could try of “amateur” bunny agility. If your bun(s) is in to that sort of thing.
Or see if any there’s a Humane Society/rescue/House Rabbit Society branch near you that runs a “Hoppy Hour”. It’d be a chance for your buns to be with others and some of them run “fun run” agility events.
Quantum – Do you know of any Humane Society places in WA that do Hoppy Hour? I really want to take my Chacha to one.
I’m not aware of any here in Washington.
The Tacoma Humane Society does a “Bunny Day Spa” for free for any buns, not just ones adopted from there. They send out emails if you’ve adopted from there or you can check them out on Facebook at “Society Buns”. Your bun gets a bunny massage, nail clip and scent gland cleaning. I’m actually in Olympia and there’s not much bunny related going on in my area. You might check with your local Humane Society or rescue.
It’s possible the Rabbit Meadows rescue might do something like that in the future once they get the new shelter done, but that’d be up in King County.
The only showing that I agree with is horse shows because the achievement is mostly performance based.
With rabbits (and dog, cat shows) showing and breeding go hand in hand. Its all about getting the perfect show specimen and many show breeders breed and breed until they get the perfect breed example. The rejects are usually sold so they can breed more while shelters everywhere are bursting at the seams with rabbits.
Ive never been to a rabbit show, since I dont want to support them, but I have a friend who attended one and said that all the rabbits were kept in tiny 4h sized cages all weekend. Not an ideal atmosphere. I cant imagine rabbits enjoy shows. Travelling, being in a strange, crowded place and being handled by strangers. My bunnies hate all of those things.
For shows, buns must be intact (since you’re really gauging breeding quality and nothing else – if the rabbit can’t eventually breed, there’s no reason to show).
I can see why some people like showing rabbits, but it sounds pretty dull to me, and basically requires you to breed (since, like I said, that’s the point of showing) unless you want to take a young unaltered bun a couple times, then neuter them and be done with it.
LPT- when I first started looking at bunnies I’ve actually read what some breeders do with the “imperfect”. I was scarred from there on. I personally won’t go near that lifestyle. But I can see why TanLover is curious since they are from a breeder and such.
Yeah, basically the breeder shows (and showed 2 of our buns now when they were both still really young and they both placed!) but she didn’t keep them and so we took them. I was interested in it more because I used to show horses and it was SOOOO much fun. But from what I’ve been hearing — it doesn’t sound like my sort of thing. I’d only wanna do it if my bun would have fun doing it. I hate when my buns aren’t happy. My third one is just so sociable and LOVES people so that’s why it crossed my mind. He’s just so lovable. And I wanna make sure I build on that so he doesn’t go backward. But that definitely doesn’t sound like the type of thing I’m looking for. I wouldn’t leave my bun for even 5 seconds by himself unless it had to be done for a vet visit or something definitely not at a show with other rabbits running around him. I think I’m too protective to even consider it anymore. Hmph. Not to sad about it if it’s like all you guys say.
Hoppy Hour?!?! That sounds adorable! And fun — also, another question since I know all of you guys who have commented are big bunny people and have always given me good answers… Scent Gland Cleaning? I’m really confused by it — how it’s done — how often — and how the heck you even get your bun to let you do that? I’m nervous I’ll hurt him. We’ve never done it before which now worries me because I had no idea what it really was before?
Check out BBs Bunny Info- Monthly Maintenance. Theres a section on anal glands. The funny little diagram helped me to figure out where the scent glands are.
