Hey, everyone.  I guess I’m just looking for some support and a place to vent? Anyway.  I think I mentioned in a previous thread that my bunny who was a-okay with his liter-box, never sprayed anywhere ever has started spraying everything (walls, people, furniture) lately, ever since we brought my cat home.  He tries to mate with her 24/7 and has developed these hormone-driven terrible behaviors.

It sucks, but we’re saving up money to get him neutered soon, so hopefully he’ll chill out.  We wipe urine up immediately as it’s noticed and have given him an extra literbox.  We’re trying to make due until we can get this bad boy snipped.  Sure, it’s frustrating and messy and annoying, but we adopted him for better or worse, and that’s that.

So, the other day my parents announced they were visiting with my siblings (14 year old sister, 3 year old brother). I panicked because our house is in a terrible state.  So for the last couple days we have been cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, rearranging, organizing, and some of the old stuff-it-in-a-closet.  The bunny tends to spray during certain circumstances, the majority of which revolve around not being able to access the cat.  So when she’s on a high window seal that he thinks he can’t jump to or when she’s at the bottom of our stair case (he won’t hop down stairs).  So I’ve been scrubbing the kitchen floor only to come back and have pee sprayed all over because cat is chilling in that window.  Argggg.

        Okay, enough rambling.

So my family stopped over because the kids were excited to see the animals.  The bunny did pretty good – he jumped into my sister’s lap, let them feed him kale, etc.  Immediately my mom freaked out when she noticed my younger brother (who is 3, reminding, and gets into evvvverything) had apparently got ahold some fresh bunny poop (he sometimes drops pellets around certain places, but we just pick them up and throw them in his box because let’s face it, bunny poop is not horribly nasty), and gotten it on his leg.  So I get her some wipes and she went on about how unsanitary having animal feces on the floor is (as I’m picking them up).  This was brought up a couple of other times.

I feel like crap.  I’m so embarrassed that the first time they see our apartment mom is dragging her younger kids out like they need to get out of here because it’s just too disgusting.  I keep telling myself that it’s only a couple pellets.  Dry, hay stuffed pellets.  Fiance says she’s over reacting and I should just forget it.  But I just feel so terrible about it.

I know that literbox training is a process and this is just a bump in the road – that things will even out when he gets fixed.  But pellet dropping throughout the house is normal right? I mean, it’s not like he’s dumping a cupful out at a time, it’s just one or two, I guess in a “Hey, just a reminder, this part of the hallway is mine, okay – don’t forget” kinda way?  Do your rabbits drop pellets here at there and have you ever had a relative or guest give you a snide remark or funny look about your “nasty rabbit?”

        Ugh.  Sorry for the vent.

I think a little kid grabbing at a dog’s tongue/mouth and then putting their hands in their own mouth (my niece did that all the time) is worse than them picking up a little rabbit poo. I wouldn’t worry about your mom. If someone doesn’t know what it’s like to have an animal in the house, then they are not going to understand that a little mess here or there is no big deal. It happens all the time, whether it is a rabbit, dog, cat, bird, whatever. The important thing is that it is cleaned up.

I am with you on this.  Rabbit poo is not nasty as a carnivore’s feces are. I pick them up with my hand too.

Yes Cotton will leave poos here n there once n a while.  When he binky’s n runs about sometimes he leaves a few.  He may leave some on me when he digs on me.   Which I don’t allow anymore cuz peeing is next.

Hey just tell your relatives it is chocolate bunny candy  lol.

Na don’t be embarrassed.   Things happen.  ONe day you will go to your relatives home and probably see some icky things too.  And some smelly baby poo.  Bluck

By the way I bet the children at some point played and smeared their own feces around.  Stinky

The evil side of me would’ve been tempted to say something like, “Oh, I know!  Almost as unsanitary as a 3-year-old.”    I know what you mean about being embarrassed, Loki, but really, we shouldn’t be.  My brother might be tempted to give me a bad time about an errant bunny BB or two, but I’d remind him of the day his new puppy defecated in Bro’s shoe….  And as for step-mom-in-law who thinks bunnies belong cramped up in hutches outside?  Next time she comes over, I might have to pick up a BB with one hand, palm a Raisinet in the other and pop the Raisinet into my mouth.  Hmmm…maybe not.  I might get my hands mixed up.

Yep bunnytowne, they do that too (both pick up dog and their own poop)! Little kids can be pretty gross sometimes. LOL

                  Hi Loki,
I wouldn’t worry, it might discourage return visits…. You want to see poop, I have 4 little girls pending spay and its like a poop fest at the moment. The other night Pepper did one of her flying binkie bombs spraying poo pellets in mid air, it was like a machine gun attack. My Mother passed comment once and was told exactly why they are not using their litter properly and that when something could be done it would be done, thankfully mine are contained to half the sun room so it limits the spread and my garden is looking very healthy.

Love it, you have to do it and if possible have someone nearby to take reaction shots LOL

Thank you all for the replies! And the great ideas, haha. Raisinettes . Hmmmm. And, yes! Three-year-olds are inherently messy. XD Oh, well. Thanks for making me feel better about the situation )

Don’t even sweat it — everyone always makes comments about the poop. It’s the cleanest poop of any animal in my opinion. Anyway, it’s RUDE to even say something like that while you’re in someone elses house! Family or not! P

I completely understand how you’re feeling. For a while my rabbit’s litter box habits were pretty bad after they were first bonded. I always felt embarrassed when people were over that they might think it was really gross or something so I’d shut my room in case they had an accident. I really see bunny poop as way more “harmless” than other things but people who don’t have rabbits may not always understand that. Don’t be hard on yourself!
