Hey all 🙂 so i’ve been researching making a bunny condo for Lola – but hoping not to spend too much on it!
At the moment she has a fairly large animal cage, with a large xpen attached – which she has access to 24/7 – with free roam of a mostly bunny-proofed apartment, when we’re home to keep an eye on her (she has a habbit of chewing the carpet).
I’d like for her cage to be bigger so in cases when the xpen has to be taken down (it takes up quite a lot of space in the living room, so any guests and the thing has to be taken down) she isn’t confined to such a small space. She also seems to enjoy jumping up and down onto the sofa during free roam, so thinking more levels the better 🙂
My issue at the moment is how to incorporate the cage i already have into the design, so as not to be spending too much on things??
Any suggestions from those who have made their own bunny condos??
What kind of cage does she have?
Have you considered using NIC panels which are inexpensive to make a condo?
Can you put the cage in the x-pen and then put a piece of wood on top of the cage to make another level.
I bought some nic cubes from amazon on Sunday night and got them 830 tues morning! I thought that was fab hunk I spent about 60 quid inc delivery for 2 boxes
i never thought of using the cage and xpen in that way!
have you used them yet? are they good quality? how many do u get in one pack?
Yea I started building last night, they are really good, the little clips you get with them aren’t any good tho and not enough so u would need to buy cable ties too, it does give u the choice on amazon to do that.
My buns are nearly bonded so I’m kinda building it in my own time for when they can live together full time, hopefully soon!
I got 2 packs I think there was about 20 panels in each box think that should be enough, I have an xpen too that I want to incorporate into it as well!
sorry for all the questions! what are you using for the base?
Erm I have an old pets at home cage guns use the base of that I think
We used the bottom of our cage as well! — Here’s some pics, thought they might help with some ideas!

We used the bottom of our cage — and didn’t think it was big enough for the bottom so we had the Home Depot cut out some pieces of wood to fit around the edges of the bottom cage part. And then we carpeted them and held them up with dowels through the NIC cubes. Our whole thing is held together with cable ties (didn’t even use the connecters they give you in the box). We only planned on having 2 levels but managed to make 3 levels REALLY easily by putting a level right on top of the cage bottom and then the 3rd level where the 2nd NIC cube started horizontally. They LOVE hiding under the 2nd shelf and theres a ramp going from the 2nd to 3rd level even though they can easily jump it. All of them are obsessed with running in the door and hopping from shelf to shelf really fast so I bet it would keep yours entertained!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
I love Sarita’s idea about making the top of the cage a 2nd level too! Seems like it may be a much cheaper option.
Tan lover i love your condo! I might copy yours teeheeee wa thinking of having the nic cubes high though, my buns arent quite bonded yet so very close though, so it’s kinda half buying ATM!
Hahaha, thanks! We thought about having them high too .. and we’re considering building up more in the future so we kept the extra wood & carpet we had left over for future building! I’m happy your buns are doing better together !! And closer to being bonded. I’m so happy mine are finally bonded! So much easier than cleaning THREE cages. And they’re so cute playing together.
I have built an NIC cube condo for 2 of my buns you can incorporate your current cage in with NIC cube condo and see if it works!
Aww I can imagen tan lover! I built my buns condo today they had about 6 hours together in it, still a lot of humping though, how did u kinda finalise the bond with urs? Like how did it go from having a lot of time together to fully bonded! You have done so well with your three, my two are driving me mad bonding I couldnt imagen trying to bond three!
Hahahahhaha. I know, I was so nervous about leaving them together. Once we could let them out together to play for hours at a time — we put them in their new home together (we thought it would be better than using one of the cages we had since it’s not really anyones territory) and left them in their for a few hours with the door open so they could come and go but to see how they did. That’s when they began really cuddling together. So that same night I slept in the living room with them and had them all in the cage and they were FINE! No problems! Fleury still humps the other boy sometimes to so I don’t think it’s really a bad thing. They’ve never fought but we’ve seen them have dominance battles but from what I read they constantly do that — especially with grooming each others head. I just let them do their thing as long as it doesn’t get escalated really. Staying out of their battles we figured out was easier than interfering and making them restart the process all over.
Awwwwww that’s so good Im deft going to sleep with them when they first sleep together! As soon as he stops his obsessive humping I’m oing to try over night!
