Hey everyone! I know there are some people with chronic pain and whatnot on here so I was hoping someone might be able to help. I have felt this episode coming on for the last couple of days. Yesterday, it was a burning sensation in my legs that gradually got worse as the day progressed and it was really bad last night. I went to sleep and when I woke up this morning my legs felt like Jell-O. I knew it wasn’t going to be a good day. I was able to walk from my car to the pick up point I have to meet at every morning okay. I made it with my group of kiddos to the first class period okay. Then there were the stairs. This building does not have an elevator that stops on the 2nd and 3rd floors. You have to walk up the stairs. I let them all go ahead of me so they wouldn’t notice me struggling to make it up the stairs. The feeling is like intense muscle fatigue. Sort of like if you were running up and down the stairs a million times and your legs literally cannot go anymore. It was absolute torture. Now, imagine me having to do that several times today. When it came time for lunch, I didn’t know how I was going to walk the 4 blocks to get there. I did though, my legs were burning the whole way and I was trying not to walk funny. I didn’t want them to realize there was something wrong with me. What do I do? I cannot afford not to go there on Monday. I need the money so badly.
I should also note that I had a very similar episode about 2 years ago. It lasted a couple of weeks and the sensation also spread to my right arm. I saw 2 doctors back then plus a neurologist. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong with me and they blamed it on a jellyfish that stung me about a week prior to the episode. I have been having pains in my arms, shoulders, and legs off and on since then. I went to the doctor about it a couple of months ago. They didn’t know what was wrong with me so they referred me to a neurologist (I think may have talked about it on here). He said there was nothing wrong with me. It hasn’t been this bad though since that original episode 2 years ago. I have no clue what has triggered this. It won’t do me any good to see the doctor about it. I can’t afford to go there anyway since I lost my health insurance with my graduate assistant position last spring.
I’m sorry this is so long.
I’m so sorry ![]()
This is a worry LBJ. I remember you posting about it a few months back also. You absolutely have to see a healthcare professional about it though! I can understand your reluctance if you’ve gotten nowhere with them in the past. Thing is, if this debilitates you further, your work and income is in jeopardy. And your general wellbeing of course. Can you loan a small amount off family? Inlaws?
I dont know what options your healthcare system has there but hopefully someone here will be able to advise.
I wonder if seeing someone like an osteopath might be more helpful? I suggest you talk with as many people as possible (your face to face contacts and maybe local forums etc) and get some recommendations for a good doctor or other health practioner.
(((hugs))) and {{{vibes}}} LBJ.
A good kinesiologist could possibly pin point the cause but that comes back to money. Some are covered by our health care system and private health but I’m not sure what it’s like over there.
I am not sure what state you are in, but some states do have state healthcare that you can try and qualify for if you are at low income status. Otherwise I do understand the fear of going into lifetime debt due to medical bills….and thats only IF a doctor will even see you without insurance unless you pay up front. Thats our healthcare for ya. So check out your state and county. I know around here there are free and low cost free clinics for womens health and basic health problems and during an examination, if they find something serious, they may be able to recommend or refer to more extensive low cost health support. I am sorry you are having to deal with this.
Have you asked about circulatory issues with your doc? Thats what it sounds like to me honestly. Circulatory problems can cause burning sensations or numbness to different parts of the body.
LBJ, Have you been tested for Diabetes ?
Unfortunately, I can’t go to the free clinic because I am a student. Apparently, if you are a student, you do not qualify for any type of government assistance. I can’t afford to see a regular doctor. I can see the doctor at school for free during the school year, but in the summer you have to pay an additional “facilities” fee. My parents don’t want to loan me any more money. I think I’ve borrowed over $800 already just trying to keep utilities from being shut off. I will finally get my first pay check at the end of this coming week.
Jersey – I’m not sure what an osteopath is. What is that?
Monkey – I thought of that. My symptoms don’t seem to be consistent with that though. The neurologist I saw a few months ago listened to some “weird” parts of my body and said he didn’t think there was anything wrong with my arteries.
Roberta – They did a blood panel a few months ago and that is one of the things they checked.
Today wasn’t as bad, but I wasn’t walking around all that much. My shoulders really burned though when I was leaning forward and trying to cut some stuff off the dog’s mouth. =\
Several friends have stated they had similar symptoms and all were caused by bulging or slipped disks and in one instance sciatica. I know they would have checked this but they have also said it took some time to identify as inflammation in the tissue hid the results in scans and Xrays.
Roberta – That is interesting. Would that cause such widespread symptoms though? The last episode I had started in my right leg, progressed to my left leg, and then progressed to my right arm. At one point during the height of my symptoms, I could barely tolerate standing. Even just standing in one spot and it just felt like my legs were going to collapse.
Well, I a not medically trained but from what I understand all the main nerve bundles start around the spine so a bulging or slipped disk could certainly interfere with the body on a wide scale. The symptoms are identical to what you described. Ditto for pressure on the sciatic nerve bundle that is lower in the back.
I see. Yeah, I don’t know. I was in a car accident about 4 years ago. I had some vertebrae in my neck that got jerked out of place (it was really obvious on the x-ray). I had horrible nerve pain in my arm, but it was just the one arm (my left one). I went to a chiropractor for several months and they did physical therapy. I felt much better after that and they said I should be 100%. I can’t imagine that that is related. But maybe…
Ah Ha…… Did they mention whiplash ?????? Its sneaky and insidious and never goes away. Mine was never really identified or dealt with until 20 years after it occurred. It could also have caused some minor nerve damage that has gotten progressively worse. There could also have been minor compression of the other vertebrae which over time and untreaded has also become worse.
I would certainly focus on the car accident injuries especially since there was obvious trauma to the cervical vertebrae at the time. I would seriously avoid chiropracters as they can sometimes do more harm than good and look toward the osteopaths as already suggested, a good kinesiologist (which is an offshoot of chiropracty without the bone crunching). Sending out feelers for recommendations on treatment and specialists.
Already recommended : Feldenkrais or Bowen Work practitioner
Go to this site and read it all the way through….. http://thewhiplashsite.com/ the doctor who wrote it is excellent in his detail and understanding. If you are in his area he also offers a free consultation.
It was essentially whiplash. What happened was I was driving straight, I wasn’t even at an intersection. There was a car in the other lane, going in the same direction, just a little bit ahead of me. There was someone in the turn lane, wishing to turn into a driveway for a business that I was passing by. I guess they didn’t see me behind the other car. They gunned it right after the other car passed them and t-boned me. My car was hit so hard that it was shoved into the curb. The whole driver’s side was crushed in. I was lucky because he hit the support bar that is in the middle of the car, between the front and back door.
If this is what this is, then I am going to be very angry. The chiropractor I went to was very good. He didn’t beat on me or anything like that. He did some gentle adjusting and physical therapy. The mobility in my neck greatly improved. Anyway, we had to get a lawyer involved in this case because the insurance company (of the person who hit me) literally pulled a disappearing act. They wouldn’t return any of our phone calls or certified letters. Anyway, the lawyer took over and got them to pay for what they were supposed to pay for. I’m angry now because I had to sign a waiver saying I wouldn’t pursue any more compensation for the accident after that. So if this is what the problem is, then I would be the one having to pay for it.
Unfortunately that’s why they have you sign a waiver… Same with mine although the period after the accident when it was finally diagnosed was considerably longer. And yes the cost is now going to be on you. Try that link I sent you and see if you can get the free consult. Go to your doctor as soon as you can and see if they have a subsidized scheme for physio/chiropracty/kinesiology. If you have an existing problem we can get 10 free treatments a year, you should be able to use the accident as previous history.
I just finished grad school, this is what my university says about uninsured students:
“What if I don’t have insurance?
HWS is committed to providing healthcare services to all students in need of medical attention. If you have concerns about your ability to pay for charges, please contact our office at [phone#] to discuss payment options. [Our university] offers a reasonably priced insurance plan. A Financial Assistance Program is available for eligible students.”
I’d call up your health center, they should have summer hours for students taking summer classes (even if you didn’t register, you can still call!). Discuss your options for getting in to see a doctor/nurse. Don’t stop there though, if they say “we can’t find anything wrong”, you tell them that there is something wrong because you’re in pain (for a while?!) and to refer you to a specialist that takes people uninsured.
Good luck!!
I went to my school’s health center today. They wanted me to pay the summer facilities fee upfront. I told them I didn’t have any money and said it was something I had been there for before. They let me do the one free “follow-up” visit so I didn’t have to pay. They can’t do anything for me there. They wrote everything down and said to call as soon as the fall semester begins so they can refer me to someone. I may have insurance again if I can get my TA position back. Well, I could get the insurance anyway but it costs $650 for the fall semester alone if you pay for it yourself.
I will most likely need an MRI if I wish to get some sort of diagnosis and that costs $$$.
