Hello, I decided to make a new thread about the rescue situation because I currently have the bun. Her name is Lilo. Donna from the rescue that’s helping has decided to keep the name. Like the title says I am fostering her for the night. ![]()
I met Donna at her vet this morning and Lilo turned out not to have too many major health issues. The biggest immediate concern is her teeth which are growing vertically (from the lack of hay) too much so she is going in for a minor procedure tomorrow to get them cut down but the doc feels positive that she’ll most likely not have re-occurring teeth issues.
The foster for Lilo didn’t work out. She had quite a bit of dogs and that makes Donna nervous so she is going to take the bun after I drop her off at vet tomorrow- giving her time to make space tonight.
Since I can’t help with fostering in my current living situation I’m going to start helping donna with feeding and grooming, etc with her foster buns next week since she is helping me out.
We found out also that the age was incorrect. The doc estimates she’s about a 1.5 to 2 years old so I’m guessing the breeder my acquaintance’s boyfriend got her from lied… oh gee, imagine that
Anyways the breeder wasn’t too bad since her nails had been trimmed before she gave the bun to these irresponsible people. Her nails were long but not curled all the way off- whew! And the vet trimmed up her fur a bit and got rid of the mats.
So here is Lilo, the almost 2 year old, lionhead/jersey wooley mix that has nothing but a bright future ahead of her:
When I picked her up from her old owner’s place (you wouldn’t believe what was underneath those towels):

After the vet and having her cage cleaned up (the best we could at least- it’s only for tonight):

She loves that fan! She sits in front of it and lets her hair feel the breeze for hours. AND she let my bf, Andy pet her. It was amazing to see her open up already.
She’s beautiful! I’m so excited for her to be able to have a good home!
Awwwww… What a cute little fuzzy! I’m so happy that everything worked out.
She is so gorgeous…. So what happened with Wendy, did the rescue decide the place was unsuitable or had Wendy already discussed the situation with Donna? I mean, its all good… Little Lilo is safe and you have help and support… just wondering what happened.
The rescue decided it was not the best environment to put a scared bun in- dogs, unexperienced rabbit person, etc.
Well, I’m glad… Got there by a round about means but we got there…..
If Wendy hadn’t contacted us we would not have gotten in touch with the Rescue and Donna… All’s well that ends well… Lilo is safe and loved.
Yes. I’m so grateful for you Roberta and your cheezepeeps and that email that people kept passing. I feel bad that it didn’t work out with Wendy but she was helpful regardless. Lilo is now with the vet. I told her soon, she’ll be able to eat hay without pain and she’ll be a healthy lil girl. This one night reminded me why I shouldn’t be a foster though. It was hard to leave her. Andy got pretty attached too. Especially since she allowed him to pet her first. We’ve decided Bunjamin will be allowed to go bunny-dating either after his 1st bday (July 23rd) or after we move. We’re going to start with the rescue that took Lilo in. I’m trying to tell myself that I’ll see her again since I’ll be helping out Donna Wednesday.
She’s beautiful. Thank you for doing what you did to get her into a safe place.
That sounds like an excellent rescue, and Donna is impressive if she denied a willing foster home because it might not be the best thing for the bunny. That says her new forever home will be safe and thoroughly reviewed. Thanks for posting the pix. I was curious. (I think I missed your description of getting her from the original owner. Did she thank you for your trouble at least?)
Roberta – the Cheezepeeps are a hoot! What a whimsical bunch. ![]()
She did thank me. But I also got texts later last night saying she missed Lilo. I couldn’t think of a good response because I can’t believe someone would treat something they love like this so I just let it go unanswered.
You can always tell her she’s fine now, there was a lot to do medically by the vet, but she’s going to a nice new home where she’ll be well taken care of. And add that it was really an ordeal you hope to never go through again.
Awwww
so fluffy ![]()
Thanks RP. I’ll try that next time she brings it up. Today she just asked how it was going and I told her the truth which is after I took her to the vet, I haven’t heard because Donna was taking over from there. I still haven’t got the feeling I did the right thing. Maybe it’s because I know how much work a rabbit is and I feel bad adding that to Donna’s plate. She’s got a lot of animals ready for adoption right now and the poor lady looks exhausted. :/ But I know the rabbit is getting good care.
HI RP, Saw you there…. They’re a pretty special bunch of People.
I am very whimsical so it’s fun to find a bunch like that, too. Got your hello there – thanx!
FF, you so did the right thing! This bunny needed medical attention, good food and a clean habitat asap. She is very pretty, and I am certain Donna will not have any trouble getting her adopted soon. I think you (not so secretly) want her, and if she isn’t adopted by the time you and BF get into your new apartment on your own, you can rethink the finances and logistics and consider bonding her with Bunjamin. But meanwhile, if she gets adopted in the next few months it was meant to be. Fair enough? ![]()
P.S. If your friend asks about her again, indicating that she might want her back, and you know she’s going to get another pet, I would keep a hamster in mind. They are small, live in a very easy cage set up, have a shorter natural life span, cost and eat less, and are much simpler to care for. I do not advocate this girl ever get another animal again, like Ever, but she’s probably going to. I’m thinking of the most basic pets for small children, and hamsters and mice come to mind as good starter pets. It’s just an idea to prevent her from keeping the door to a bunny open for herself.
Sounds perfect to me… I’m betting you will see her again… Maybe just a hug and kiss before she goes to a forever home but I know you will see her again. Donna is not going to boycott you……
As to pet references… Pet Rock… Crazy Crab… Google eyed Cactus… Arborial Cockroach….. Leaches… Something large and nasty that is notorious for escaping its pen and devouring its owners, Skunk….
Now, now. Play nice.
Desktop computer turtle….
I’ve heard arborial cockroaches make lovely pets… Very low maintenance and thrive on the occasional handful of garden waste.
HAHA. I do want another bun and I’ll admit me and Andy did bond with her a little during the rescue efforts but I completely love Bunjamin and will put his happiness above all so I still believe in letting him pick. I think I’m really concerned that I put more stress on another person. So I told Donna when the time is right for Bunjamin to get a friend or wife that I’ll come to her first. That way even though I put in a rabbit to the rescue, I’ll eventually be giving one a good home. I hope to see Lilo Wednesday when I go over to help Donna with the daily maintenance so I can check on her. I hated leaving her alone at the vet for her first procedure.
My mom thought a cat would be a better pet too because they don’t need to see the vet as often and a lot of them like to cuddle but also like independence. I don’t really like the idea of her getting any more pets until she grows up.
BTW Donna mentioned something about hamsters I never knew- she said she has one that she has to trim it’s teeth every week (she has all types of small animals at her rescue). So I’m starting to wonder if all animals really require more care than we know of at first.
