While I was eating lunch I saw a mouse dart across the floor! I stood up and screamed on my chair.

My dog rushed in and grabbed it and killed it

I am afraid there are many more in our house! This happens like, everyday!

We put out mouse poison. What if the mouse eats poison then my dog eats the mouse?! What if he gets poisoned then?

What if our house gets so bad that its like the show “infested” !??? EEEPPP!!!!!!

I need suggestions on how to kill these suckers, FAST!

        THANKS FOR READING!!

I would call the vet’s office and ask about poisons. I agree that it could be a huge problem if your dog ate a mouse who had been poisoned, but maybe some poisons are not harmful to dogs.

I would stick to baited traps. You can even get humane traps and let them loose outside. For bait, peanut butter works well because they can’t grab it and steal it before the trap closes.

Get the humane catch and release traps, no risk of doggy getting hurt then and the mice don’t get hurt either. When you catch one, drive it at least a mile away (or walk it) and set it free. You can even google how to make your own traps, if you don’t want to buy some.

To avoid reinfestation though you need to figure out where they are getting in. Certain oils (mint oil especially) works well at entrances to deter any pests (bugs and rodents) and it’s non-toxic if your pets get to it.

I would definitely by the humane traps instead of poison. When we’ve had ants really bad before we’ve had to get poison and it always makes me extremely nervous. Stickerbunny has a good idea about the mint oil and mice, I know we now sprinke a mix of red and black pepper around where ants are coming in and it keeps them at bay.

On a side note, I’m watching Infested right now and it’s giving me the heeby jeebies!

Quick tip for the humane traps: Put a bottle cap of water and a few nuts or cereal pieces in the trap in addition to the bait. Mice have a very quick metabolism, and it’s not good for them to go more than a few hours without eating. Also, put the traps in a visible place and set an alarm to check them every day.

I like the humane traps. Not only is it better for the mice, there’s also no worry about pets getting hurt. Snap traps could break a leg, electric traps could malfunction or be chewed, poison could be ingested, and glue traps could damage a bun’s fur or rip off skln…but there’s no way a bunny (or dog, or cat) could easily hurt themself with a humane trap. Humane traps also rarely have to be replaced – just release the mouse, rinse the trap out, put in new bait and you’re good to go.

Okay, but I have no clue where they are coming in at :/

You’ll have to check everywhere. It could be in a closet, the basement, the attic, under a cabinet… it varies. Check every nook and cranny.

Usually there is a hole, you may notice chew marks where they made it bigger, etc. You may also notice mouse droppings around the area.

We found the area. It looks just like a mouse hole from the movies! We are going to fill it in then put traps out

mice are great at chewing, so be sure to put something there will dissuade them reopening it before you fill it in (pepper, peppermit, etc)

A couple of thoughts as we just went through this and solved it.

No poison. Two of my friends have had four figure vet bills because their dogs ate poisoned mice. Like in the last two months. Also not so humane.

I’d also say skip the catch and release traps because if two mice get in there, they hurt each other. And who knows how long until you find them…Unless there are catch and release that won’t catch more than one mouse? I’m not sure.
I think the snap traps that kill instantly are most humane, just in my opinion. But definitely no poison-not only could your dog get into the poison but eating the mouse will hurt him.
I was also able to catch two by hand myself and release!

Now, you must find out where they came in. We had broken the siding in the shed that is against the house moving tools. We got some window/door spray insulation, patched it up-no mice

Lots of snap traps baited with a sunflower seed covered in peanut butter. That worked great when we had a infestation. Within a week we did not have anymore mice. Humane traps like the tin cat work great if you just want to put the mice out in your yard but you have to check them often because male mice can kill each other when left in the trap together. I have read that taking mice to a unfamiliar location is like sentencing them to death so I recommend the snap traps because it kills them really fast.
