So I’m not sure I should be venting here but I’m running out of people and places to talk to. I’m having money problems. Like most people. But if I try to talk to my parents about this I get nothing helpful from my dad and my mom just wants to give me money but I know money is tight for them so I don’t like taking it. Plus, I don’t like getting money I didn’t earn.
I know the source of the money problems is I’m barely making any. I’ve always been able to survive with my cosmetology license and online selling. But taking on this bead project for my uncle and my dad has not been pleasant. And I thought going to see my uncle would give me answers but he shrugged off all my questions. For those of you don’t know, I was basically assigned to sell my late aunt’s bead collection. There are thousands of beads and I was pointed towards selling online so I made etsy account, studied it, inventoried hundreds of beads, organized them, and started listing them. Well it cost money to do all of that plus my site wasn’t getting any attention so I had to buy advertising. Well I’m almost $200 in debt from the beads alone. And they’re selling but really slowly. I worry that my bank account has gotten this low and groceries still have to be bought and bill paid. Thank goodness I stocked up on bunjamin food so I don’t have to worry about that for a while but I still gotta buy his veggies.
I feel like a failure. I want to go get a real job so I don’t have to worry as much but I’m not sure with my current health problems I’d be able to do retail again and I know I can’t work full-time in the salon. And if I went back to work someplace I wouldn’t have time to work on the bead project because it takes almost my time now. And on top of it all I have an irrational fear of loans and debt so I don’t really want to borrow money from anyone. I’m just bummed that it’s got this bad. End rant and if you read all that, thank you.
It sounds like the bead project is really taking you away from doing things to improve your situation and it’s become a burden. Can your uncle help fund it since you’re doing this for his benefit? It seems unfair that you have taken on this full time job that’s putting you into debt, but is helping someone else. I think if you could table that for a while, you could focus on getting back on your feet.
I think trying to be debt free is completely admirable and in the end you’ll be so happy you didn’t just rack up tons of credit card debt.
What types of jobs are you qualified for? Are there other jobs that use your cosmetology qualifications that don’t involve standing up in a salon all day?
Thanks for replying so fast elrohwen. At this point I think I will ask my parents to intervene and talk to my uncle since he blew off the debt when I mentioned it. But my relationship with my uncle is strange since I didn’t know him that well. He rarely visited with my aunt and they live so far away. Before this bead thing we didn’t talk at all so I’m not sure I’m comfortable asking him for money.
I can’t think of many jobs that use my skills like that. I tried doing nails full time but when I tried that, I invested too much money and being out of school for a couple years my skills weren’t as “fresh” for keeping up with the trends if that makes sense. I would be better off if all my current clients weren’t having hard times too because they go super long in between color and cuts to save money. I make so much more money when I’m doing a bunch of hair then I ever did working retail or online selling.
Have you looked for a desk job instead of retail? You might be able to find a temp position (through an agency or on your own) that will be easier with your health problem – something like answering phones.
I haven’t since school ended. But I will. During school, the desk jobs I found conflicted with class. But I’m going to look for something temporary
I sent you a message. =)
That sucks, that the beads are being so draining on you like that
I’ll spread the word around to some of the bead people I know, see if I can’t get more interest in them ![]()
Oh thank you monkeybun! I could use all the publicity!
Put the beads on Ebay, there is a huge demand you can calculate the shipping/postage cost by weight on line and charge up front for it and have the payments directly into a Paypal account (don’t ship till payment is received). Since your Uncle doesn’t want to know about the debt I wouldn’t let him know till the beads are all sold then deduct your costs from the profits and give him what you think is a fare share, don’t forget to allow for a percentage to cover your time and effort as well. The bidding wars on interesting beads on Ebay is ferocious.
Oh, you can transfer the money directly from your Paypal account back into your bank account or just leave them there until you want to draw out a small amount of the total balance.
I appreciate the input Roberta. I have a few of the commercial made jewelry that was in her supply items listed on eBay since you can’t sell finished products made by someone else on etsy. Maybe you can point me as to which beads are in demand on eBay though because I couldn’t find very much beads that actually sold on eBay.
I agree with Roberta, I would ebay or craigslist ( or both). Etsy is great, but paying for marketing probably wasn’t ideal, and that was a large chunk that you probably won’t see return on. Depending on what kind of beads they are, you can also look for crafting jewelry forums that have b/s/t sections. Where you’ll really make money is from places like those, where people see value in what you have rather than looking for a bargain.
Well the majority of the beads are higher quality. Not something you’d give to a kid to make jewelry with if you know what I mean but she does have some that you could give to a kid so I’m starting to make a pile that I’ll put in our garage sales this summer. Save me some money there. I like the idea of finding a jewelry forum that has a b/s/t. I thought of the forum part but thought it would discourage sellers from advertising. I’m thinking since the latest (almost 100 lbs) of beads I brought back with me a lot of them are group by type of gemstone and selling them in a big collection instead of all individually. Especially the un-labeled ones that I could only guess as to what they are. Maybe if they don’t sell in garagle sale I can try craigslist. It just makes me nervous with all those rumors of people using it as set-up for robbery and stuff like that.
I should add that I’m about to call my dad and see if he’ll give me any advice as to the amount I’m in debt with this project and what I should do if I ever get into the Profit side of things since my uncle blew me off.
All I can say is that I really hope that you get back on your feet.
All of BB is here to comfort you and make sure that you get back up and get money for everything you need. Dont hesitate to post if you need anything at all!
All of the SP gemstones are in high demand, basically anything unique or vintage. I wouldn’t limit myself to local either. Download a list of international rates too and offer them as available to other countries, you can nominate which ones (I’d go UK, USA, Canada, Australia plus which ever other ones have easy postal/prepaid satchel services).
They tend to list either under jewellry, craft etc. Mixed lots of between 5-10 beads are popular or larger lots of one type by multiple. Security on Ebay is very good as is Paypal. Really its just common sense. Never log in via an emailed link always type directly into the browser. If you hold shipping until the money is received then you will not lose out when selling. You can put the lots up for straight Auction and/or set a higher “buy it now” price for people who are impatient and don’t want to get involved in bidding. You can include a small amount for packaging as part of your shipping cost so you are not out of pocket there either and you can also set a reserve price.
If you are checking Ebay to watch trends the really good bidders wait until the last few hours then go hammer and tongs. Because of this an item might sit for a while looking like no ones interested. You can specify how long a period you want the item up for.
Ooo I do adore the gemstone beads. Any hints of what kinds? ![]()
ebay is no longer a friendly place for new or small time sellers. auctions don’t command the prices they used to because the site is so cluttered and their search is crap. after all fees are said and done they take a monumental amount, so you need to have a pretty good margin to make it even worth your while.
if you’re a new seller you will also be subject to the 21-day paypal hold (funds will be frozen for 21 days or until your delivery confirmation shows delivered,, and even that release is glitchy)
That’s odd, As a private seller on Ebay I haven’t encountered those problems. The fee was tiny and reasonable last time and there were no holds on the funds at Paypal. Do different countries have different rules on Ebay ?
Just looked and there does seem to be a variance. They still have the 30 free listings for casual sellers but the rates on the others were still very low unless you were trying to sell a boat, car or caravan. And no freeze on the Paypal. Probably a good idea to pop in and have a look, Ebay Australia also has a freight and postage calculator so I am assuming other Ebay sites would too. I found the bulk of the gemstone beads by typing in “gemstone” in the search box next to “all Categories”
It’s possible. Mike’s reason were another reason I’m hesitant to put the beads on eBay. They take almost double what Etsy does and I’ve been selling on eBay for over a year and I’ve had a lot of issues with people not paying or saying it was broke when I know it was not and all the who-ha. I really do like etsy just because you can list something for set price (they take 3% after it sells too) and then it’s listed for four months.
I wonder if the market is better in Austraila too. Maybe I should send them to you Roberta
Just kidding, I wouldn’t put this burden on anyone.
Monkeybun, I’ve only went through 3 of the bags but since I packed them myself I know they’re more organized then the random boxes my uncle sent me. So far I found a bag full of sodalite, red coral, a few other colors of coral, turquoise, and rose quartz. The turquoise and red coral bags were huge but less than half that was in bags where I could identify so I was thinking of making those the larger lots of all the ones that I have no idea on price and stuff.
I called both my mom and dad. Dad was less helpful like I thought and said I’ll think about it and we’ll talk tomorrow night (tonight). My mom wanted to give me money. I refused but told her I take a loan for part of the bead debt and we settled on that. That should help me a little. Also my boyfriends cousin’s girlfriend said her work is hiring and you can sit most of the time so she’s grabbing me an application today. I’m starting to feel a little bit better that I’m not going to get swallowed by my bills
Yeah, the ebay fees are really high. They double dip. There is a final value fee on your listing and then paypal will take a chunk too if the person paid with a credit card.
oooo can’t wait! After my little vacation I may be allowed to buy some ![]()
I’ll try to get some more listed just for you monkeybun
Although you can always pm me if there’s something you’re looking for in particular because I still have piles to sort through that aren’t near the listing part of my cycle.
I usually don’t know what I am looking for until I see it. The stones themselves give me the inspiration ![]()
oh that’s very cool. I feel that way about colors when I paint ![]()
So I’m actually kind of into the jewelry making thing… if you could private message me your etsy I wouldn’t mind taking a look! anything vintage? Vintage is definitely really big now!
TM- sent! thanks
Don’t forget to keep the idea of sunk costs in mind.
