My other thread got me thinking, so I was wondering if I could just get some input on this.

Anyone here have experience with rabbits and guinea pigs being loose together?  How did it work?  Did they live together, or just have play time together?  Were they actually bonded, like two rabbits bond?  Pros and cons to rabbit/guinea pigs being together?

I tried looking up info about it on rabbit.org, and surprisingly they don’t really have anything about it.

They don’t bond, but I’ve read they can coexist. Is your guinea pig litter trained?

I’ve also read that most bunnies carry pasturella and that’s toxic to piggies, but I’ll have to look up the specifics.

No, but she does do I’d say 90% of her business in one corner of her cage, so I probably could get fairly close to having her litter trained.  I do know guinea pigs aren’t as skilled at litter training as rabbits are.

Now I find the whole “one could kick the other” thing kind of odd, since bunnies don’t kick each other, but maybe because it’s a different species it’s more of a problem. The disease reason alone is enough for me though.

I find the “bunny kicking the pig” argument strange too. I’ve never seen the bunnies kick anything unless they were restrained and kicking out. Just doesn’t seem like normal bunny behavior.

How does pasturella spread? Would a bunny spread it if they were in the same room? Or would they need to be living together? I’m just curious about that one because I never knew it was so bad for piggies.

I said this in your other thread, but wanted to add it since this one is more specific and might be viewed by people with the same question. I have seen piggies and bunnies share cages in rescues before. From my understanding, they don’t have a very strong bond and can be separated, unlike bunny to bunny bond, but I don’t have direct experience. I know the recuse I visited would only adopt existing pairs of bunnies together, but usually adopted out bun/pig pairs as single buns and pigs, not as a pair.
