Hi everyone, im new here. I have alot of animals, i have 9 bantom chickens, 7 breeding indian runner ducks, tons of ducklings at any givin time, a pair of sebastapol geese, a male lionhead bunny who is 6 months old and today i got a 4 week old blue flemish giant. the issue i would like some help with are this…. is my flemish too young to litter train? im trying but i dont know if its too early. and she is VERY social, she loves to be held and wants to stay in the creese of my neck
but i have 4 children and she is small so i dont want to leave her cage open until she gets bigger for her to come and go, she WILL get stepped on if i do. so she sits and chews on her cage. should i just not worry about it? and last, is she too young for the salt block?![]()
Wow 4 weeks?? Thats way too young to be away from Mum! Whats her story?
What is her cage set up? She might be too young to litter train, but you can definitely encourage habits by setting up her pen right.
Baby bunnies are almost always cuddly
She may or may not keep that, just a heads up
A flemish giant isn’t a cage bunny, the seller told you that right? She’ll get to anywhere from 12lbs to unlimited, they don’t have a recorded maximum. She’s not to young to have space, I’d start with at least 4×4, but within only a couple months she’ll need 4×8 minimum living space, even if she has out of cage time.
Rabbits don’t need a salt block
They do need unlimited hay, and unlimited pellets (check out Bunny Info-Diets Above for good nutrition on a pellet!).
Welcome and pics please!
i got her from a breeder, i was told she was 6 weeks until i got there to pick her up and was told that she was 4. he gave me pellets to give her and said to slowly switch her to what i am feeding my lionhead but he eats timothy hay and i give him the pellets with fruit pieces and seeds in it once a week. i didnt know if she was old enough to have the timothy hay, she is drinking and eating the pellets well and i just keep putting her little poops in her litter box. she will not be caged once she is big enough to not get lost in a shoe haha. we are a family of 6 and because of the kids our lionhead is the coolest bunny ever. he is in a 2 by 4 custom cage behind the couch but runs the house most of the time, mostly hangin out with the kids while they play. he was handled ALOT when he was a baby and i plan on raising this one the same way. ill put up pics as soon as i figure out how hehe let me know about the hay, im just worried about bloat so i dont want to give her anything until im sure
Definitely give her hay, ASAP. Its necessary for her diet, and wont give her problems.
The pellets with junk are awful. They are like feeding your kids lucky charms for every meal. Not so good. Check out Oxbow, its the best and highly recommended.
Is your lionhead neutered? If not, do not let him anywhere near her. They can mate through the bars, and she can get pregnant early, its not unheard of even at 6 weeks. Its a shame the breeder sold her at 4 weeks, thats illegal in most states. You might think about taking her to a vet and getting her checked out, she should still be on milk.
Upload to photobucket or flickr and grab the direct link and paste it in the little image box ![]()
Hello and welcome
Are you currently feeding your Lionhead the pellets with the fruit and seeds? I would highly recommend not feeding those to any of your bunnies. It is like candy and very bad for them. A plain pellet is good – alfalfa based for babies (until one year of age) and timothy for adults (1+ years of age).
Any type of hay is great
All bunnies are different. I got my rabbit from a breeder also (will adopt next time) and she was handled as a baby as well, and I handled her, and she dislikes being handled in anyway. They all come with their own personality ![]()
BTW I have a lionhead and a flemish giant as well! They aren’t bonded yet though, its been a bit of a pain, since you have to wait until after spay recovery, and that can’t happen until she is 5-6 months old. I started working with them a bit but I’m taking a break and now Sam has one half of the house while Lady has the other.
thank you for the food info! i will get her to a vet, that is very upsetting that she should still be on milk, she is obviously used to eating these pellets he gave me
she is sleeping in her litter box right now lol
where is the image box?
Under Add Reply, there’s a little square with mountains and a sun.
Welcome to the forums! See this thread on how to upload/insert pictures – we’d love to see them: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/114117/Default.aspx
Everybody so far has made great points so far about litter training, food and hay…also, definitely a good idea to get your bunny in to see a vet for consultation – 4 weeks is quite young to be away from momma
.
If you are planning to let the two of them run free, are you also planning to have them neutered and spayed? At 6 months, your lionhead sounds like just about the right age to have the operation done. Even with him altered, however, it’s important to have your girl bunny spayed when she is about 6 months old as well – females have a high incidence of reproductive cancer if left intact.
I’ve found the easiest way to add an image is to use quick reply then go back and edit the message. At the bottom under the post your are editing you will get three lines, the first one is “add an attachment” choose your pic in the browse box, upload, then click the spot that says insert image. There is also a tab where you can view any files you’ve used previously and reuse them if you need to.
im gonna try again
