› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Job offer.. I’d love some unbiased opinions!
So I know a lot of you guys read my previous thread about the work from home position at a local nursery/florist, that didn’t work out, but they offered me an office posiiton instead.
Well, they officially made me an offer. But I’m torn! So here’s the stats:
Current Job:
– Working at a bank call center, M-F, and an occasional Sat, hours change occasionally, sometimes working late/filling in.
– I have no interest in banking.
– The people are super nice, and the work isn’t too hard, but it can get a bit hectic at times.
– Working in the call center, so dealing with grouchy customers, but also sometimes really rewarding when you make a customer happy.
– Can get monotonous, sitting at a desk all day, doing the same stuff over and over every day, little variation in the work.
– Tons of room for advancement, but really not something I’d want to stick with long-term.
– Business casual attire. Pretty conservative workplace.
– Fairly “recession-proof”, very strong bank that has actually continued to acquire new locations throughout the last few years of bad economy.
Job Offer:
– Working in their office as a bookkeeper, M-F, no weekends, set hours.
– Working at a nursery/florist, something I’m super interested in and have formal education in.
– Don’t know about the people, very well could be some unpleasant folks to work with, no clue.
– Minimal customer service stuff, don’t work with the customers themselves very often.
– Kind of a “jack of all trades” job, doing different things depending on the day.
– Some room for advancement, especially into things I’d love to make my career. But not as many opprotunities as the bank to advance.
– Not as recession proof as banking, not sure about job security? Company has been around for a long time and is a large company.
– Casual attire, jeans and sneakers are fine. Very laidback workplace.
EDIT; Duh, most important thing.. both jobs offer the same pay and similar benefits.
What’d you guys think? I’m so so so so torn. No clue which way to go. ![]()
Is the new company expanding and it’s a new position? Or is this a replacement for someone that left?
Is it a locally owned and operated company? How long have they been in business?
Personally, I’d go for the offer. First, it’s in a field you’re interested in and have education in – that’s a win right there.
Second, it offers a wide variety of things to do every day. For one thing doing different things every day is just interesting and keeps you on your toes. For another, when you go to apply to your next job you can spin that experience in so many ways depending on the job you’re trying to get. With your current job, you won’t be able to claim much experience in anything other than customer service, while the new job might give you experience in accounting, management, purchasing, etc that you could leverage later.
The only downside I see is that you’re leaving a place with people you like and going to a place with people you don’t know, but that’s almost always how it goes with a new job. As long as you think your direct manager will be good to work with, the other people will work themselves out (in my experience, having a manager you like to work for is key).
You did say there is less room for advancement, but that’s just at that company – you can always advance with a new job somewhere else. At the bank you can advance, but it sounds like you don’t want to stay there anyway so advancement wouldn’t be a big incentive.

I believe it’s a replacement, but I could be wrong.
It’s a locally owned/operated company, been in business since the 1950s. They’re probably one of the largest horticulture companies in the area.

I didn’t think of that, very good point. Thanks! ![]()

I know right?
The job offer’s dress code is “no short shorts, and no tank tops”. ![]()
They sound like a good solid company and I agree with Elrohwen. Sounds like a great opportunity for you.

Thanks! I’m not used to having options, in this economy I’m just glad to have a job at all, let alone two different jobs to choose from! ![]()

LOL!
I’d certainly hope not.
So curious, what did you decide?
I actually ended up having to turn down the offer, and staying where I am.. not really by choice, but I discovered the benefits at the new place were HORRIBLY expensive, and I couldn’t afford to work there with the cost of their benefits.
.
I’m not too upset about it though. They’re hiring more people at my current job so I think it’s going to improve here quite a bit. ![]()
I imagine they are expensive because they have a smaller work force – the larger the workforce for health insurance, the better the premiums.
It sounds like it worked out well for you anyway, so that’s good!

Yeah you’re probably right. Currently I’m paying about $25/week for benefits.. the other place was over $100/week! ![]()
