  I want to be a K-9 cop. Can anyone tell me what you have to do to be one?? And is anyone here a cop or know someone who is?

  I imagine you just need to go to the regular police academy and become a cop. I think you can request the K-9 division, but they only pick a few people (from what I’ve heard on tv).

  You have to enter into the police academy like normal, become a uniformed police officer and use that experience and time to network inside the department and then apply for the department you want – in this case K9. My great uncle was a police lieutenant before his accident, it is a lot of hard work. You could probably talk to someone at a school admissions place to get in contact with an instructor to discuss it and decide if it is really for you.

  Yes, I’m sure you have to go through the regular police academy as well as special training to work with the K-9 unit. It’s probably pretty competitive, so you would have to make it clear that is where you want to go from the beginning and then show them you are a good candidate.
  
  I am a graduate student right now. I study human dimensions of nature resource management. I’m still unsure what I want to be when I “grow up”. It would be helpful if I could find some job openings that are even remotely related to my field. Haha!

  LBJ10: Yeah, and I think K-9 is for me. Other than that choice, I think Vet Tech sounds interesting! AND Other than that, photographer is cool. I have always liked photography.

  My sister-in-law’s partner was a K9 cop. She had to retire from that; K9 cops have an increased incidence of hearing loss due to non-stop barking when driving through certain “high-crime” areas. When she was doing it, she really liked it tho, it was just hard when her dogs died or were no longer able to work because you get so attached.

  Beka27: Yeah, I bet you would get extremely attached! But I really would just love to have the thrill of when you get criminals off the street! I gte the thrill when I am watching TV shows about cops too!! haha

  If you do want to be a cop, make sure to stay in school and graduate. Maybe take some criminology courses in college too. That will help you when it comes to advancing

  Let me know what you find out. I do not want to be a K-9 cop, but I want to train the K-9 dogs. Or train cops how to handle the dogs. Either way I want to train WORKING dogs. I think if I became a behavior and obedience trainer for pets, I would be smacking people left and right.

  i recommend watching the Police Academy 1 thru 4 movies to brush up on your skills,, dont bother with #5 because they got rid of steve gutenberg and it went downhill from then on.

  I was a process engineer for cookies and crackers – I basically made Goldfish and Milanos for a living (don’t want to say the company, but you can guess it from there). It sounds cool, but the company was awful!
