Prelude :  Frannie is 13 months old , Spayed had her first

Waffles 3 yrs old, not spayed

set up as in picture –

        the xpen comes down and

Frannie can run around – she will sniff and bunny flop next to Waffles cage for hours with no aggressive behavior – but , the second Waffles comes out to explore – Frannie chases her and bites her neck

So I thought Frannie likes her, but I guess not   Do you think it might change after Waffles gets spayed ?  or am I doing the whole introduction wrong ?  ANY input would be greatly appreciated  Thanks !!

I would stop trying to bond them until a month after Waffles is spayed (to let all the hormones die off and to make sure she’s healed). Waffles probably is sending out hormonal scents that might be causing Frannie to feel threatened and be aggressive. It sucks waiting but it will be worth it.

Are you planning on creating a set up for Waffles like there is for Frannie? Because that cage is far too small for her, as I’m sure you know.

You need to get Waffles spayed, then give her a month to recover/get hormone free. Then you can start bonding.

Oh , absolutely !!!   Waffles is getting spayed Wednesday  !!!  When I put her in her xpen she pees and poops ALL over – so I have her in the smaller cage ( which makes me sad ) until I get her hormones undercontrol, then I will try to train her – The shelter had her in a teeeeny tiny cube like cage 🙁 so I bought this one for a temp cage until I can get her spayed.  I do take her out and spend at least 2 hours with her a day – so she can run and exercise…..but she still pees and poops all over ……..( territory marking do you suppose ? )   Poor little bun bun – I can’t wait to get her fixed up , her nails trimmed, etc…..I am sure she will feel much better

I figured as much Frannie looks like she has a great habitat <3
Lady took FOREVER to litter train, she’s still hit and miss in her pen but at least she doesn’t poop out in the house. I think its because of the hormones/territorial thing. Its now almost 1 month post spay and she’s finally down to only a small pile outside her box.

You can train her before she is spayed. Start by not having the bedding everywhere in the cage, just in a litter box

You really can’t base future bonding on interactions through cage bars or on interactions with unfixed buns. In both cases you can get completely different results than you will when you have both fixed and in a neutral area like the bath tub.

And I agree with MB – take the bedding out of her cage and just give her a little box with bedding and I’ll bet she picks up litter training pretty quickly (even if she isn’t 100% yet)
