Hi there my frined adopted a rabbit about a year ago from a pet store. It came with one of those cages that are to small for rabbits those cages that come with everything. She said to me she is going to get a bigger cage for her rabbit and wanted some help. I thought instead of getting rid of the cage she has I know you can take an xpen and attach it to her exisiting cage. My question is will this be a good ideo or should she opt for something else? and what do people use to cover the top of there xpen?

I think thats a great idea, I left Samsons pet store cage in her xpen because it was like, her safe place for a long time
If you get a tall one, 36in (mine are 32) you wont have to worry as much about a cover unless you have a persistent bun. But you can use a sheet, nic grids, cardboard boxes opened up….

Made for dogs, for sure. The ones that are made for small animals are awful IMO, they are flimsy and much too small

                  Like this one- http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Zinc-Indoor-Outdoor-Exercise/dp/B0002AT2IE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1327898965&sr=8-5

You can probably find them on craigslist too, just be sure to be safe about it.

I agree that the xpens made for “small animals” are poor quality, and usually cost as much or more than a regular dog xpen. Definitely recommend a dog xpen (I also have the Midwest brand), it will last forever.

Great idea! That’s the set up that I have. I like using the cage to keep the litter boxes and hay in. When it’s time to clean the cage I can just sweep up the extra hay and wipe down the plastic.

I would recommend a dog pen over a small animal one because they are higher quality and sturdier.

ok this next question might seem dumb. You obvisouly leave teh door open from the little plastic cage. The rabbit wont ketch his leg on it or have trouble getting out?

I put a grass mat over mine and secured it to the door with sisal string.

Alternatively you can also just take a pair of pliers and remove the door entirely if you plan on leaving it open anyway!

I have a relatively small cage attached to a large xpen (for dogs) which lola has access to 24/7. when im home, i mostly open up the xpen so she has free roam in the flat. she’s totally litter trained now so i dont have to worry about ‘accidents’, only about her habit of chewing the carpet to pieces!
