Please help! I just created the ultimate crib for my buns Phenom aka The Nomie Monster and Boon, aka BoonGoon, until they are bonded and share a much larger living space which I am currently working on. Each of their cages is set up this way:

Yes, rainbows and little white clouds for the bunny butts to sit on. Oat Hay and CareFresh in the litterbox (I am terribly allergic to timothy hay, and oat hay is the next best thing!)

THE PROBLEM: They keep peeing (and pooping) all over their little white cloud bed.  And they kinda want to sleep in the litterbox.

Prior to this arrangement, they had no litter pan, and chose any random corner to do their business in. Usually under the hay manger, but not always. I felt this setup was more comfy for them, and easier to keep clean for me. But they got it all backwards! Help!

No offense, but that cage is a bit small. Buns need a lot of room to hop around in.

Peeing in the bed is normal. I have to make sure Nava’s beds aren’t too soft or she’ll pee on them. -_- Also the litter box thing is normal too. Bunny people recommend a litter box your bun can comfortably lay in, because it is just something they do. My Nava uses one box mostly as a bed and the other one as her poo box. :/ Lol.

You may have overlooked the part where I mentioned this setup is temporary I am building a pretty big rabitat and it should be ready by the time the two are bonded.

So…. do you usually just wash the bed when they pee in it?

And, this morning I noticed there is a pile of pee in the corner opposite of the litterbox. Even tho I put the litterbox in the side that they prefer to go in, it’s almost as if they blatantly do not want to use the litterbox.

I would take it away and wash it with some Nature’s Miracle. You’ve got to really get that urine out of there or else they’ll keep on peeing. Try giving it back in a couple weeks. If they keep on using it as a litter box, take it away again. It took my rabbits a few tries to stop peeing in their bed.

Bunnies just like to pee on soft things sometimes. I had a bed like that and my rabbits only ever slept in it once, but Hannah peed on it over and over (even after washing) so I eventually got rid of it. In my experience, rabbits prefer to lay on the cool plastic floor anyway.

My buns would go nuts if I kept them in a cage that small, even for 1 day :/

First of all… I’m sorry that my cage setup upsets you guys. The cage is nearly 4 feet long and 2 ft wide. That’s the LARGEST plastic bottomed cage I could find, anywhere, and it was the most expensive; for a temporary setup I don’t think it’s that terrible.
What would you rathe me do? Let them roam the house til their condo is built? They would get hurt. I don’t coup them up in their cage all day either. I let them out but I supervise them. I feel like I’m being called a bad bunny mom here. Their new condo is being built of wood exterior and reinforcements inside, with three floors; it is taking a long time and a lot of money.

Anyway… back to the topic. I took the beds out yesterday. It’s extremely cold here in Pennsylvania so they have been curling up in their litterboxes which is fine for now. I’ll try with the beds again in a day or so.

Mine would never use pet beds to sleep in, he would just shove them up in a pile so he could lay on the plastic tub instead, I think some prefer to be cold than warm.

Mine has carpets in his habitat and even if its 50 degrees in the apartment he still rather lay on the even colder tile. Silly bun…..

My buns want nothing soft, they just pee on it. I’d say let them sleep in the litterbox! If you want them to use the beds later, maybe try placing them on top of something in the big bunny condo. My buns like to sleep on top of boxes, kitty condos, or anything that’ll hold them. Like one of these: http://www.tscpets.com/26297-pid.html. Even though it’s soft, they use it and don’t pee in the inside, don’t ask me why! Instead, I give each of my buns a marble tile, and they much prefer sleeping on this to anything else. O.o

Hey guys! The buns quickly learned how to use their litterbox and they haven’t had an accident since my last post! I’ve cleaned out the cages at least several times and not one “oopsie.”

They don’t like the beds, for similar reasons, lol. They do love to lay in the litterbox, and Boon curls up in the blankie while Noms actually crawls UNDER her blankie. Literally. Like, her-whole-body-is-under-the-blankie.

But that’s just while they’re in their cages, for the most part they have complete run of an entire room, it’s just that since their neuters are only scheduled at this time they can’t be out *simultaneously*.

Their condo is actually being built by myself and my carpenter friend at his place. We are using the blueprints of an ornate outdoor rabbit hutch but we’re tailoring it to an indoor rabbit condo, with tile flooring and a second floor. I’ll send pics as we progress.

I’m really hoping to end up with a trio when all is said and done, because I couldn’t bear Phenom’s grief when Beau unexpectedly die during his neuter surgery. *sigh* she’s been an anxious little girl ever since; hope the spay helps her with that.

                          mig: your linkage was broked!
