i have asked this question before but ive made a few tweaks here and there.

so my rabbit lives in a XL dog crate (48x30x33 inches) its not as big as i hoped it would be but i guess its manageable. he is only in there when he is sleeping / napping or when i am not in my room/ out. he is also in there whenever i go to school and when i am asleep.

he usually tells me he wants to get out by biting on the cage bars until i do something about it lol, he also woke me up this morning to tell me he was ready for his veggies and free time! i guess i wont be sleeping in any time soon LOL. i usually wake up at around 12-1pm on the weekends (horrible i know) but today i woke up at 8am . which is normal but not normal for me lol. but im glad i can actually wake up early and enjoy the morning but anyyway sorry i got off track there; my rabbit gets free range of my room whenever i am in it. all of the wires are blocked off by nic grids (the grids also blocks off my desk which he is not allowed to get into). but he can get under my bed and stuff (there are large wooden boards under neath my mattress so he has chew through 4-5 inches of wood before reaching my mattress) he has enough room to run around in but my room is small.

is this cage okay for one mini lop rabbit? he is around 6 months and still “small” (for a mini lop) he is around 3 and a 1/2 lbs! but im assuming he will grow over the next few months. i also ordered a 42″ high xpen and it will arrive on tuesday or wednesday, so i can take him out! should i bring his litter box when i take him out? lol. i dont want him to lose his litter habits just because he is outside.

and for future references; a dog crate would be too small for 2 rabbits right? sometime in the future (maybe not sure yet) i would like to get another  bunny. (maybe… and if i do it wont be any time soon lol)

Looking at pictures of him in the cage it is bigger than I originally thought. The cage is probably big enough for him if he gets a bunch of play time. My bunny stopped chewing at the bars when I got her a bigger living space. I’d keep that in mind if you have the opportunity for more space in the future.

I personally wouldn’t worry about his litter habbits outside if he’s just on grass or dirt. I don’t think it would affect his indoor habbits, but I cannot say for sure. I would expect that he’s going to lose them when he hits the “teenager” phase, so be ready for that.

As far as a second rabbit goes I would push the thought out of your mind for now. I would recommend new rabbit owners stick with theirs for 6-12 months to make sure they fully understand the costs and obligations that come with a rabbit. I have easily spent 2000 USD on vet bills in the past 6 months alone. You should make sure that you are ready to treat any costly emergency that could arise with a rabbit before considering another one. I have had success with stuffed and surogate rabbits.

That cage might be too cozy for two rabbits. During bonding or if they stopped getting along and had to be seperated, where would you keep them? I think you have stated that there isn’t a place besides your room that would work. Would they each only get 1/2 of your at home time to spend outside their pens? If they’re stuck in while you’re at school and while you’re asleep, that really isn’t much time out.

For that size rabbit I think a cage that size is ok as long as he gets at least 4 hours of time to run around. As you grow to trust him, you might even think about letting him have unsupervised time out of his cage. Maybe leave him out when you go down for dinner or if you’re watching tv not in your bedroom – if you’ve done enough bunny proofing and he’s not especially destructive he should be able to earn this.

He also probably won’t grow any more. He might fill out a bit and gain a few more ounces, but small breed rabbits are typically full size around 6 months (Otto was 4lbs at his 5 month neuter and at 3 years old he’s still 4lbs). Based on his size, he’s probably a holland lop and not a mini and won’t get much bigger, so you don’t have to worry about that.

I definitely think that cage would be way too small for two rabbits. They really do need space to get away from each other if they want. My two stay in a 4’x4′ pen if we travel with them and I always feel like even that’s too small.

Your rabbit is so cute. It is weird I have the exact same litterbox for my bunny sunshine just her color is purple. You also have the exact cage I used when I first got her but for a 6 1/2 pound rabbit it wasn’t quit big enough. I am not sure if anyone on here mentioned it but it is really important for you to have a hidey house inside the cage for your bunny. I have one for sunshine it is just a cardboard box I got for free and cut 2 holes in it. If you click here https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/118733/Default.aspx you can see a picture of her cage and the hidey house is off to the left. Rabbits love having a hidey house incase they get scared they have some where to go and they love it to be in and out 2 holes. In the wild they make warren and they have an entrance and an exit. Also the issue of the bitting on the bars. Both my rabbits love to bite on the cage bars. Rabbits also love to be on a schedule and they get use to that schedule. I feed my rabbits every morning at 7:30 am my rabbits get use to that sometimes sunshine will bite on the bars I can hear it since she is in my room. A few morning I couldn’t take the noise i would get up and feed her. She got use to that and expected it everyday. I posted on here something about it and someone said just to ignore her she will eventually go away. I do ignore her and she does go away. I use to talk to her and that just made matters worse. My thing would be is to ignore your bunny because he will get use to it and expect it all the time. The cage is the perfect size for your rabbit probably wouldn’t be ideal for 2 rabbits. When i started bonding my rabbits the cage they were going to live in was 3 ft x 5 ft and I thought that might be to small. The bonding never worked out. My rabbit was like your rabbit and did get undermy bed. I had to switch the direction of her cage and block my bed off with nic cube panels. That has worked out great. I will post a better picture of the cage I took that jelly fish toy down and you can see the cage better. Sorry for such the long post. Your story reminds me so much of me and my bunny!

alright! thanks! yeah i doubt my parents would let me get another rabbit anyway … not that i mind! i love my bunny a lot, and he is getting more and more used to me now. i get out at school somewhat early- i get out at 3 everyday but on tuesdays i get out 1.

alsooo, @elrohwen- the rescue said that he was a holland lop but i mean he really looks like a mini lop. when i first visited him his foster mom also brought another rabbit a long because i was interested in one. the real holland lop’s head was much more round and a bit smaller than the other rabbit (the one that i have). and the holland lop was around 1 and a 1/2 years old and my rabbit is 6 months old and just a tiny bit bigger (maybe it was just because his head is small)
but i have some pictures of him, would you mind looking at him and saying whether he looks like a mini lop or holland?

and also, he is already neutered. i adopted him from a rescue (:

oh and kamdy; what a coincidence! and OMG! i saw your pics a long time ago and i sort of got inspired to do the same thing with my cage lol! and oh really? i will make a little cardboard hidey house then (: my dad has a LOT of cardboard boxes in the garage since we get CD’s in the mail every month.
also, actually i dont mind him biting on the bars :b. i mean i dont want him to get the idea that if he annoys me then he gets to do whatever he wants but i think of it more as… communicating? plus i wake up way too late on weekends so he is also sort of like my alarm clock! lol. (i woke up at 8am today and i think its the first time in years that i actually woke up this early on a saturday LOL)

and i cleaned out the under side of my bed so he can go under there. he does dig at the wall but i got my spray bottle and after spraying him multiple times for the first few times; he finally stops with 1 or 2 squirts lol. and sure i would love to see another pic of your cage and no dont be sorry! i love reading about other peoples advice and stories

With the lop breeds the best way to tell breed is the weight – a rabbit that is under 4lbs is definitely not a mini lop even if the face looks like a mini. There are plenty of non-show quality hollands out there who don’t have the smushed in faces.

OMG I just thought the other day I love the name paisley and thought if and when I get another rabbit. I just might call her paisley. That is weird. Paisley will tell you what he doesn’t like. How old is he? I am not sure if you read this about food http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html it has alot of good information it. I also have a formula if you ever have to switch his food. I will be happy to give it to you I have used it a number of times and it was worked great. Take care and give Paisley lots of snuggles!

That quick? It should take a few weeks to transition properly. first week on 75% old food, 2nd week 50%, 3rd week 25%. If you go too fast it can upset little bun tummies.

well i actually fully transitioned him onto timothy pellets today. is that too soon? i gave him a few alfalfa pellets just a few minutes ago because i accidentally sat on him…. NOT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE. i got up to adjust his hay in the litter box and he followed me and when i got up to sit back down on the ground i felt something furry underneath me. i didnt squash him, i got up immediately when i felt him. but i gave him a few of his old alfalfa pellets so he wouldnt be mad or something… i also accidentally tripped on him /: but that was like a week ago. and i didnt kick him, or anything. barely touched him really… but i should really be more careful -_-…

You transitioned him pretty quickly. It should be 75 old/25 new the first full week, 50/50 the second week, 25 old/75 new the third week, and all the new food the 4th week… but at this point I would just keep a close eye on him and make sure his poops are normal.

Its ok that you accidentatly sat on him. Accidents do happen with rabbits and you will learn. It should have taken you a month to transistion the food. You will need to keep a close eye on your bunny. There digestive tracts are very sensitive. There skelatal track is also fragel so you want to watch for that as well.

he still gets a few of his alfalfa pellets, and i would try and make the transitioning process longer buuut i am running out of his alfalfa pellets that his foster mom gave me. he has been pooping normally, but he isnt pooping a whole lot. is that normal? he does poop a “lot” but not as much as i thought a rabbit would? and not as much as the first few days…

you should probably I am not sure maybe someone else can chime in on this. Maybe call the foster mom and see if ou buy some more pellets till make the transitioning longer or go and buy a small bag. My rabbits poop alot well I think they both poop alot. Also is youur rabbit getting enough of any type of grass hay?

well he was on oxbow alfalfa pellets and now he is on oxbow timothy pellets, he doesnt seem to have any “problems” though… (no cecetropes or however you spell that, and no diarrhea). also yes he has bermuda hay 24/7. i got some orchard grass and turns out i was VERY allergic to it so i havent given him any since… (i knew i was allergic when i got it but i didnt think that i was going to be that allergic to it…) he’s been eating a LOT of hay recently.

that is a good thing. Rabbits do need to eat a hole lot of hay!
