Hi there i was walking today and I noticed 4 kittys and I assume it was the mother cat to these kitties. I have seen them out other times and they are stray cats. I was wondering what I should do. I am highly allergic to cats. i was wondering if I should call my local shelter?

I would look around for a rescue that helps ferals, there are some in different parts of the country. If not, then the shelter can take them in. Ferals have low life spans and hurt the wildlife in the area (birds, small animals, etc) and it would be best to at least get them fixed so they can’t breed more ferals.

We have a big problem with feral cats around here. People putting food out for them doesn’t help the problem either. We have a capture/neuter/release program here. If they truly are feral, you should see if there is an organization that works with ferals in your area. They can take the babies and find them homes. If the mama cat is too wild, then they can just spay her and release her.

I have never heard of feral cats. I think at one time the mother was probably an inside cat. I am not sure.

Ferals are just cats that basically are the children of cats that got loose and were born in the wild, after a few generations of no human contact, they get a bit wild. They are a big problem for some areas and because of it a lot of places have capture/release programs like LBJ said.

We have the same problem here…the neighbor had a black cat that he left roam outside and she got pregnant…and now there are 5 cats over there….i have found 5 kittens in the past year. I was able to handle them and find them a good home but one did get away…he’s really afraid of humans….Its sad because they almost always get hit by cars….

Hopefully, you can find a sheltar that has spaces available…ours is always overflowing with cats because nobody keeps their cats indoors…>

I really don’t know if she is friendly because I am allergic to them and I don’t go near them I just see them from afar.

When a stray cat found us with her kitten and then had 5 more we tried calling everyplace and they were full. (Although I recommend calling first still). What we ended up doing was finding the 5 kittens homes at the appropriate age and having the initial kitten (who was too wild to re-home) and the mom fixed and now they hang around our house (yes we feed them) and we let them sleep in garage. My parents like the free pest control for the garage part and me and my mom kinda got attached to the initial two too. But I’m allergic. Idk if that situation is ideal. But if you’re friendly with vet or find a full shelter they still might be able to help you get the momma fixed when the kittens are weaned (for a nicer price or maybe even free) so she doesn’t get pregnant again. I think that’s the nicest gift you can give a stray cat. Kittens make their survival harder.

I think the kittens might already be weaned. From the looks of it they look old enough to be weaned. I might try to call my humane society and see if they can do anything. I have seen the mother cat here and there since the beginning of summer. Thanks for the help.

Look for cat-specific rescues and ask. They are the ones who often sponsor catch and release. If you can catch her yourself, I’m sure they would appreciate it. Then they can decide if she is adoptable or not. If not then they can just spay her and let her go where you caught her. I agree with FrankieFlash, it is the most humane thing to do in that situation.

Unfortunately the local Animal Control officer has the job of responding to a call and taking them (legally) but it would be to a kill-shelter so they risk being euthanized if not adopted out by a certain amount of time. Kittens have a good chance of adoption, and if it’s a matter of saving their lives, you can call your town animal control shelter first. They would also know of any local no-kill shelters and may be able to give you info. on other rescues to call locally since they often work with them. Look it up on line under your town/city govt. website.

I think it really depends on where you live. My hometown is a low traffic small population country town, pretty much everyone has outside cats. I get mine fixed, of course, but not everyone does. They are now 10 and 8 years old, healthy and happy. That said, we do feed and get them flea drops and vaccinations, etc. Wild cats aren’t so lucky, but where *I’m* from they survive fine on their own, even without the flow of catfood. I would be hesitant to call a shelter if they kill them

that is what I am thinking. I just dont’ know what to do. I think a neighbor feeds the cats because I saw them eating on her porch.

Why not ask your neighbor about the cats then?
