so i have an XL dog crate (48x30x33 inches) but you know it seems a little “small” still, so i made a second level. its not the best but at least theres a little loft. the level/ shelf is 24×29 inches.

i was wondering if this was okay? also, is the second level too low? what if the rabbit hits his head while trying to get into the litter box? i dont want to move it up, because he’ll have no room on the second level. here are the pics. PS i am getting a mini lop and i know they are kind of big, but i met a 5month old mini lop (the one im getting) and he seems pretty small? maybe round 4-5lbs. i know he isnt done growing but yeah. thanks. any opinions? He will only be in the cage when im asleep/ at school! and please ignore the ugly wooden dowels sticking out of the cage, and i havent glued down the tile yet (i have 2 more so thats why it isnt completely covered). thanks!

and also, i dont have the hay or food in yet cause i dont have my rabbit, but i have everything lol

Looks pretty good Are you going to add more stuff? How is the second level secured to the kennel? The only thing I can suggest is buying an xpen to attach to the kennel because while your asleep and it school is actually a lot of time, that way he or she can have room to run around and binky

im not sure if i will add anything else… and its on wooden dowels, it seems as if its not secure but it is. it wont “accidentally” fall off or anything. my room is really small and im not sure if an xpen will fit /:

Rabbits need a lot more space than that. Are you planning on bunny proofing your room? Buns also need a ton of stimulation, usually in the form of cardboard boxes, grass mats, tunnels, diggy boxes etc. And a place to do bunny runs and binkies

yes i know, its only for when im asleep/ at school. this was the biggest i could get. my mom doesnt like the idea of a nic cage, and the dog crate is wider (but shorter in length) than the nic cage. i didnt put anything in there yet since i dont actually have a rabbit yet, i just out the litter box in there so i can get used to the scent/ air out the litter lol. but i am only getting one rabbit, but he is medium sized. i might plan on letting him roam my (small) room when im at school i could just get nic grids and make a little “fence” blocking off my bed and my desk. but i am worried that he might pee on the carpet. i dont care if he damages it or anything because my parents are in the middle of replacing the carpet with vinyl, they just havent done my room yet becaause they started on the other side of the house and they “remodel” every summer lol

I think if you have linoleum on the second story your rabbit will not go up often. It is very slippery and your rabbit will probably slam its face on the ground when it tries to hop off. I would get something that gives more traction to their furry feet. I really think that will not work out.

You’ll definately want to have more in the cage for your rabbit to interact with. A bored rabbit is a destructive rabbit. My rabbits have cost me hundreds in just carpet repairs. Add onto that door damage, baseboard damge, dresser damage, and wall damage. No matter how expensive toys are, they are far less expensive than repairing bunny damage.

In earnest, that cage will probably be too small as your rabbit grows up. There just isnt enough space for other objects. I used to have one that was a similar size. At first she liked it, but over time she got really bored and unhappy. Much happier when we switched her to an x-pen. Consider that you do not need to use all of an x-pen. With some you can wrap them around themselves or remove panels.

You can still try that and see how it works for him. Some bunnies are alright with cages like that if they have enough “out” time. I found that with work, school, and sleep I was not able to give her the “out” time she needed to be happy. It sounds like your situation may be different than mine was though.

EDIT: Make sure that you really know your rabbit before you let him out without you there. One of my rabbits I could trust, the other I cannot at all. Peeing on the carpet won’t be a huge worry once you get him litter trained, but it is all but guaranteed he’ll pee at least a few times. Get some Nature’s Miracle before you get your rabbit. It helps prevent remarking. If he is living in your room he will probably pee on your bed and pillow at some point. Just a warning. Beds are the comfiest litter boxes ever.

well school ends at 3 and on tuesdays i get out at 1. i dont play any sports or anything, i have a lot of free time on my hands. and i know i didnt put any of his toys in his cage yet, NOTHING is in his cage but the litter box. i will put some toys and everything in there, right before i get my rabbit. you can put hay in some of his toys so yeah i dont want the hay becoming stale or anything. so yeah.

i might think about getting an xpen and taking out some panels, although i doubt it’d make a difference? also, he wont be getting on my bed anytime soon since he will probably be shedding LOTS since he got neutered yesterday and im getting him on saturday. after he stops shedding a lot i’ll let him come on my bed and stuff

ohhhh wait… when bunny friend asked if i was going to add anything i thought she was asking if i was going to add any more levels / an xpen or something. yes i will add more toys and a bunch of other things. i will probably get an xpen once he is fully litter trained (for the most part).

oh and this is a weird question: how do i know if the rabbit i adopt is actually neutered? when i visited him on monday he was really nice and stuff and he wasnt neutered. how do i know for a fact that he actually got neutered?

If he wasn’t neutered on Monday why would he be neutered now?

To be frank, checking for testes would be the easiest way to see if he’s been neutered. The pouch will still be there either way. If he has not been altered it will be much more prominent and you should be able to clearly tell that he still has his testes. If he’s still sensitive from surgery and doesn’t want to be picked up you may be able to see them between his legs as he hops around (that is, if he still has them). With mine you could.

He’ll be shaves, with incision marks on him if he did just get neutered.

This too. Sometimes vets will also tattoo around the rabbit’s incision to mark that they are altered. Not sure if they would need to do this with males and I don’t know how many vets do it.

That crate is a good size for a single bunny with enough out of cage exercise time. When you’re in school during the day, the bun will most likely be sleeping/lounging around anyways. Buns make good pets for people with school/work during the day.

As far as the shelf, it looks to be an okay height. You could always move it higher if it seems to be too low. I agree with the suggestion to attach something to the shelf. The vinyl tiles are good to protect the shelf, but try putting a blanket or something over the top.

I understand dutch where your coming from. My mom to loves my rabbits also doesn’t want the house being trashed and rabbits chewing. I also have a very tiny bedroom. I wish my sunshine can have a very large cage it just isn’t possible so I had create something that would work best for me and her and to make sure she gets enough exercise. I did bunny proof my room there are no electrical cords in my room nothing is plugged in in my room. I blocked off parts of room like under my bed so she can’t go there because its very hard to get her out. I to had a dog crate for sunshine when I first rescued her it was 42″ x 26″ after 3 months I realized it was to small for her she is a 6lbs rabbit. I didn’t know how to create a 2nd and I am no carpenter. I got an xpen didn’t like it and didn’t work for sunshine I built her a cage out of NIC Cubes and it has worked wonders. I think your cage is going to work. Just make sure your bunny gets enough exercise and has enough toys to keep her busy. Straw mats are a good thing to keep her busy. I order sunshine extra large straw mats you get 6 in a pack for about $38 from busy bunny. I forgot if you said you rescued your rabbit from a rescue group. When I rescued my sunshine they told me she was microchipped I assumed she was microchipped to the rescue group. Come to find out a few months later she is microchipped to a human society about 3 hours away from me. I am glad I did check into it because if she would have gotten lost she was chipped to the humane society. I did get that taken care of and now she is microchipped to me. I was a little disapppointed that the rescue group didn’t tell me she wasn’t microchipped to them. Please let us know how everything goes with your rabbit. I did wonder to when I rescued susnshine if she was spayed they told me she was but I just wondered!

thanks, yeah my mom really hates nic cages (i made one but had to take everything apart and return them) she says “they look trashy”. i know.. its not even an excuse but i guess a dog crate is okay.. someday i’ll bunny proof my room. a dog pen literally will not fit in my room lol… im going to petsmart today and i plan to get some litter (newspaper based since i am allergic to pine and it smells SUPER STRONG) and lots of toys and food & water bowls.
i’ll get a straw/ hay mat i cant get timothy hay since i am extremely allergic to timothy hay… and basically any other hay besides ryegrass and bermuda and bahia. (i am allergic to bermuda and bahia but its not that bad)

You can try hay cubes. Rabbits do need alot of hay in there diet that is what most of there diet consist of. I have read an article about people who are allergic to hay. I found a few things switching to orchard hay. You might want to try that or some websites say taking an allergy pill. Also you want to make sure you use a high fiber timothy based pellet. Depending how old your rabbit is here is a great article on feeding ages http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html Oxbow is a great pellet or zupreem is good if you can’t order online and can only order from petstores I know my petco has zupree. Also I don’t know if you said what type of litter you are going to use. I use yesterdays news and love it. I get a 30lb bag for $15.99 at petco. It last me about 2 months. I scoop out the soiled stuff everyday add new litter and put hay on top of that everyday. Once a week I dump out the litterbox and disinfect the litterbox with white vinegar and water. I also wash dishes twice a week or putting them in the dishwasher works as well. Also some cheap ideas on supplies. I am not sure if you have a michaels craft store near you. I went last year after the holidays were over and where they sell holiday stuff they have candy dishes. I bought both of my buns these candy dishes one was a christmas tree the other one a snowflake. They only cost me $.50 they are cute safe for buns and alot cheaper then going to a pet store. I also use a water bowl so you can use these as a water bowl. Here are some homdemade toys. Toilet paper roll stuff with hay since your allergic an alternative hay is fine. You can also check out the toy archives page they have great toy ideas there. I also wanted to say you can use timothy hay cubes. You might not be so allergic to the cubes. Hope this helps!
