        …because you’ll come home with a bunny.

          .

        So… meet Adam West.

That’s the photo from the shelter site, I’ll get some of him once he’s settled in.  Everything just fell really oddly into place.. Zeus is getting neutered, I’ve rearranged my finances so I can afford it (no more eating out, oh well!), and Adam West was in the shelter just shy of a YEAR, poor boy.  He was so scared in the shelter.. he would NOT leave his hidey house and the shelter person basically said I wouldn’t want him because he’s shy and not a bun you can play with.

When I said no, I’ll take him, they basically shoved him into a carrier and sent me on my way.  No screening questions, no checking references, nada.

It wasn’t exactly planned.. I wanted to wait awhile.. but when a bun is in need, a bun is in need.  Zeus fell into my lap in a similar way.  He’s a cute little boy, looks like a Dutch I think.  About a third of Zeus’ size, maybe smaller.  They don’t know his age, I’ll have to ask the vet when I get him a checkup.  Even if he’s an older bun, that’s ok.  I’m so glad to give him a home.  He’s less scared at my apartment then he was at the shelter, and he’s only been here a few hours.  I think the commotion of a shelter just terrified him.

I won’t be introducing him to Zeus until after Zeus is neutered.  Probably a few weeks after, to let the hormones settle.  I might let them sniff through the cage bars, but that’s it.  They’re in seperate corners of my living room seperated by the futon so can’t see each other when they’re both in their cages.  Out of cage time will probably be split, one in the living room and one in the kitchen.

Ack, I can’t believe I just brought home a bunny!

Yeah very entertaining name.   I think I’ll be calling him “West” for short.

He’s watching Zeus right now (Zeus is loose, West is in cage and with a baby gate in front of cage to keep them from even touching noses until West settles and relaxes), and is alert but not terrified.

                ^^ I would. Haha!

He is adorable. I’m glad you rescued him.
Not sure where you are located, but I know the Human Society in Texas wants to give Vick a dog, and are like in love with Mike Vick, and regularly put Pits to sleep for no reason, so I’m not a fan… Sounds like your HS isn’t that great either if they just pretty much throw you a rabbit, obviously it is in good hands but they don’t know that… :/

Yeah.. I mean, I can’t hate on them too much, because the Animal Control shelter is HORRIBLE and euthanizes a ton of animals with no attempt at adopting them, and the HS does make an effort.  I just wish they wouldn’t lump rabbits in with hamsters, mice, gerbils, etc.  They live just as long as some dogs do, they should require the same screening.

Dang. OHS here sounds light years ahead of those humane societies!

Congrats on the new addition He does look dutch, maybe with some nethie in him with the round face and shorter ears.

Yeah his ears are TINY!  I actually thought of Monkey when I saw him. .

Like I said, I really can’t talk down on the HS too much, they’re trying at least, but I sure wish they’d be a better advocate for their buns.. I was prepared for them to call my vet, my landlord, ask me some questions, but nothing.  Maybe because he’s been there that long, they just wanted to get him outta there?  I don’t know.  They had another very cute bun who had been there even longer, but I guess he needed an only bun household.

Zeus has no idea he’s here, or just doesn’t care.  He’s more wondering why the baby gate is there rather than the bunny behind it.

Hahhaha he is so handsome! And cute! It is so nice of you to give him a forever home. I’ve been volunteering at the humane society and I feel so bad for the ones that just need to be in a nice home and with someone who will go slow with them. I’m sure he’ll get comfortable soon  Are you going to keep the name he came with?

Yeah he was just one of those animals with a face that screamed “I don’t do well in shelters”.  The lady who helped me also didn’t know how to handle rabbits and basically dragged him out of the cage.. .

And yeah I’ll be keeping his name, but calling him “West”.

                                      Thanks everyone!

Zeus and West touched noses this morning.. Zeus finally realized what was behind the baby gate barricade and was sooooo curious.  So he smashed his face in as much as he could til his nose could reach, West came over and stuck his nose out, they sniffed for like 30 seconds, then West tried to nip Zeus on the nose.  .  It wasn’t a super aggressive nip, he didn’t lunge at Zeus or thump or anything.  Zeus looked stunned for a minute, then tried to sniff him again while West hopped away to go back to his hay.  Poor Zeus, new bun in his house and West thinks his hay is more interesting!

I’m very surprised.. Zeus isn’t being territorial at all.  No spraying, no thumping, no aggression.  More of just “Hey!  You’re a bunny too!  This is so cool!  Come here I want to say hello!” .

West is also not doing too bad on litter training.  (He was in a guinea pig cage with the entire tray covered in bedding.)  He’s doing some poops and pee on the coconut mat next to the litterbox, but nowhere else.  I’m just cleaning them up and putting the poops in his litterbox.  He’ll figure it out I’m sure.

Awwww. He is one very lucky bunny. That’s a real Gotcha! but I think you are special for taking him.
Did they at least give you his medical history? I don’t care for that shoving him out of there way of giving him to you, despite their seizing the opportunity. You don’t want any health surprises, so it would be good to get any records if they didn’t provide them at the time. Just call and ask them to be mailed. Meanwhile, a visit to your vet for a basic exam is in order.

Zeus sounds good with it so far. You have these next few weeks to get Adam West (LOL) acclimated, working on his litter habits, exploring your new territory.
I would suggest a surrogate toy swap for each of them to get used to their smells.

That’s awesome, Adam West totally lucked out!    Do you have any concerns about bonding the 2?  I stopped by my vet the other day to buy some hay and there was a sweet little black bunny set up in the waiting area, already spayed and up for adoption.  I was so tempted to take her home but the idea of bonding 2 buns kept me from taking her……maybe in the future.  Zeus seems pretty mellow & laid back so hopefully it will be quick and painless!

No medical history.. all I know is he was in the shelter for 8 months, was relinquished because his previous owner was moving, and he’s been healthy the entire stay at the shelter.  No guess on his age.  He’s got a vet appointment a week from today, that was the first thing I did this morning was call and make an appt for him.  I want a guess on his age, general wellness check, etc.  If he ends up having any health issues, or ends up being a senior bun, I’m ok with it. .

Would there be any clues to show a bun advanced in age?

Zeus is being great so far, and luckily we’ll be able to take it really slow since he’s not getting fixed til mid-Jan.  I probably won’t really attempt bonding until Feb.  Until then I’m doing like you said, swapping items from either cage to keep their smells around each other all the time.  Zeus can’t have a plush toy in his cage unsupervised, he’ll eat it..   So I’m using their mats and willow toys to switch.

Congrats!   He reminds me a little of Sarita’s Bobby but with dutch markings.

So cute about Zeus haha. He’s a big lovable bear.

He totally is a big love!  I took the baby gate barricade down, Zeus was attempting to climb it/jump over it so it was being more of a nuisance then a help.  Now Zeus goes over occasionally and tries to convince West to come over and say hello to him.  West usually ignores him until Zeus leaves, or they’ll sniff noses and then West will go back to eating.   No more nips so far, yay!

Zeus is definitely being the friendly one.  He goes over and perks his little flop ears and just looks at West like “Hey!  Look, I’m here!  Come say hello to me, come here!” .

Mocha: West is neutered, yup.  He’s even got that little spot tattoo in his ear that some vets do to indicate a fixed bun.

Being in the shelter 8 months without a problem is a good sign, so I wouldn’t worry then. You are doing all the right things – it sounds great for all of you! Zeus sounds like he wants a new playmate, so they should be much more familiar by the time the neuter is finished. Keep us posted on AW’s progress. It sounds like he may just blossom in your home.

That’s so great for you and Zeus! My rabbit, Bunny, was also not territorial whatsoever when I brought Mr. Bunbun in. She just wanted to be friends! Mr. Bunbun wanted the sex, but he calmed down with that after the neuter. They were such an easy bond! It only took me a couple days! Here’s hoping yours are easy too!

Wow! O_O Not what I was expecting either! This is why I don’t take stuff to Animal Control here, as much as I’d love to…I’d either have to take them all home or they’d have to clear a space for me there because I wouldn’t leave!

Awww Zeus! Such a big lovable guy, I guess he does want a friend after all. I hope he’s ready for some disapproval though because that is one grumpy mugshot from the shelter there. Lolz…. ^_^ Cute bun though, very unique markings for that size.

Well then, congrats are in order! I agree with Pam, be sure to get health records or that checkup as soon as you can. Something I need to do for Jenna is go back to the vet that worked with her rescuers to see if they have anything on her. She’s got coat problems now that could use a bit more background to diagnose.
Happy new year to you, Zeus and West!

Hmm.. I may have to check his ear again.   I thought I saw just one dot but I could be wrong.

We’re having some minor issues with litter training.  It’s more my issue than his.. I’m so used to big Zeus that I put a Zeus-sized litterbox in there, and West I guess found it too deep (had to jump kinda high to get in), so he wasn’t using it at all.  Now I’m trying a shallower corner box, we’ll see how it goes.  It’s hard finding one shallow enough that he’s comfortable getting in, but deep enough where he can’t pee over the edge of it.

Small bunnies are so different!  I don’t have to secure everything down so much and reinforce everything a million times to support Zeus’s 10lb body.

Well if you find such a perfect litterbox because I need about five of them for Mimzy. With his bad back end he isn’t even bothering to get in the box lately. We’re back to carefresh on the hab floor.
