As some of you know we are building a house in 4 months. I am starting to plan mine and the bunnies setups. They will be sharing a 12×14 room with me. Their will be a bay window which I would like the rabbits to be able to go on and look outside. Their will also be a pet door that leas out into the pen I made this summer. But I will be able to close it at night and during warm and rainy weather.
I am tired of cages/pens. I hate the look of them and do not want one in my new room. I have a few ideas on what I will have instead. I was hoping you guys could help me decide on what is best.
First is an idea my dad thought of. On one wall their would be wooden levels/ramps that lead to the ceiling and then have a little shelf ( with edges) that goes around the top of the room. The problem with that is I would have to have a ladder to clean it. So most likely I wont have that. but I do like the idea of wooden shelves and ramps on the wall. I don’t want it to look weird though.
Another idea was something someone else has here on BB. I would have a little corner with a house type thing and inside is like a little play house. Then the water and litter boxes could be their to, but their wouldn’t be a cage.
I will be adding more ideas when they come to me, but for now, if anyone has any questions, concerns, ideas, advice , comments, just let me know.
OK, if you didn’t get that idea from this video-you NEED to watch it lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy4wRw7J1cA
But the only thing I could see being an issue is cleaning ramps up that high. Fine if they are totally litter trained but fur and dust and hay will get about and I couldn’t imagine. If your tall and balanced then that could work
I like both ideasp-if I’m picturing correctly! ![]()
EEEEEeeeeekkkkk. I haven’t seen that video before! I am going to show my dad this video! “”want”” Ahhh. its so hard to decide.
Very cool to be able to design a rabbit room / bedroom from scratch!
You and I are on the same wave length Mocha. I can’t wait to get rid of pens. I’ve also been thinking about something like a mezzanine floor. And playhouses. I picked up a plastic childs one a few years ago and have been wanting to put it to use again.
You could go for something more quaint though.
Are you having a loft bed there? I think I recall you have one. That could be a good way to corral their things or build some structures under the bed frame. Like ramps or levels. You could even partial curtain the area under the bed to create a little nook.
Though that ^ could disturb your sleep…
Sorry, i wasn’t thinking. Lack of sleep. I have RABBITS in the BEDROOM!
Haha. I don’t think I am going to have a loft bed in my new room. BUT, My Mom and Dad just met with the builder yesterday and said that my room will have vaulted a vaulted ceiling and my bedroom is right next to the bathroom so I am going to have about a three foot tall nook over the top of the bathroom. ( If you know what I mean) So my Dad said that the bunnies would be able to go up their, So my plan as of right now is to have ramps/shelves that go up to the nook and have a little play area up their for them! Of coarse they will never be locked in up their. my plan is free range all the way!
Like a secret room! So cool.
In the winter I imagine they’d enjoy it because it would be nice and cosy.
yep. I am getting super excited. I think I am going to film us building the room+rabbit ramps and levels then post it here on BB.
I don’t really have any new ideas but this sounds so cool! My rabbits are totally cage-less and sometimes I feel like their set up is a little boring for them.
I would only be terrified of my bunny falling off the ramp or shelf from that high and getting really hurt, otherwise it sounds nice.
Kinggoblin: I will have edges on every thing. Ether wood or something. That’s the main thing I am trying to figure out right now. I could do something like a plastic glass thing like plexieglass, (if that’s what its called) but then it might be even harder to reach over and clean. Any ideas for an edge on the ramps and levels?
I’d be most comfortable with the chickenwire like the video has. You can clean stray poops with a stick-vacuum, that would be easy enough. Mostly you’re just going to have to hope that they don’t mess the ramps and tunnels though I think.
I really do not want wire although that may be what I have to do, IDK, I will have to talk with my dad. They have Plexieglass in their video around their stair case. What do you mean about messing with the ramps and tunnels?
So I thought I would bump this thread because I am in need of some more help.
Last weekend we went to look at prices for appliances, flooring, cabinets, etc. We are going to have hard wood flooring throughout our whole house. I worry about my room with bunnies in it though. I was wondering if the bunnies happen to pee on it, would it soak into the wood and start to sink? My parents would like my room to be hard wood but they would consider tile flooring. Also with tile, would the caulk between the tiles turn brown and yucky if peed on? My bunnies don’t normally pee outside of the litter box but Lulu does tend to do it once a month it seems.
I may also get my own room! My sister will be leaving in October and the basement room will be empty so my parents might let me sleep down there and the bunnies would get their own room! My dad also joked around about having a ramp go through the floor into the basement room so the bunnies could be in both rooms. That would be so cool! but I doubt it will happen.
Tile and wood would both stain if peed on. What my parents did was high quality linoleum throughout the parts of the house that were not tiled already. That was probably 10 years ago now, and the products that were available looked good then, I can only imagine how realistic it would look now! Linoleum can look like tile, wood, stone, marble, ect.
For the ramps, I would recommend you put hinges on the plexieglass so you can simply drop them down when you need to clean. This way they can be a little bit taller for their safety, and look so much better than chicken wire. You could make the ramps (bases) out of wood and then line them with a cheap linoleum in case they pee in the tunnels.
My parents want our house to be very nice and weren’t open to having linoleum as we have nice linoleum at this house and they wanted something better. But, I talked to them last night and they said they wouldn’t mind as once I move out they can replace it with better flooring and it would save us an extra $400! Thanks KytKattin!
I like the plexiglass on hinges idea, although I was thinking plexiglass may be expensive and I should go with coroplast instead, even though plexiglass would look better. I have also thought about something like this person has for their cage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7YR_WCZ3Ws
I like cages made out of furnature. mine are made of of baby cribs. I think there are pictures on my profile.
my rabbits aren’t going to be in a cage they are going to be free range.
Haha, that was actually what I was going to recommend. What’s the point of having nice things if they are just going to get ruined? lol. This way everyone is happy!
I was going to say something about alternating the coroplast and plexie, but that video you posted had those nice metal bars that don’t look too expensive and then you can see them as they go up and down the ramp. And they just close so nicely with a bungee cord! How exciting! I can’t wait to see the finished results!
i will have to look at prices. i cant wait until i can start building but i might not be able to start until next fall
We have tile, white even, and it doesn’t stain at all. Real wood wont stain either as it has to be lacquered and that’ll protect it. Faux wood floors may stain, take a brand and google it. My inlaws had fauz wood in one room they added on and it was awful, if it got wet at all it would bubble (and it wasn’t cheap stuff!)
ETA- the grout is fine as well, and unfortunately its been tested often since I got 2 bunnies. Hopefully that’ll stop soon though.
