just trying to get a feel of what wesley’s setup is going to be when we move.  will rabbits use a “closed” litterbox like cats do?

        thanks!

My bunnies aren’t cage free buns. Sunshines is out upstairs the majority of the day and goes in her cage when I am not there. I have a massive cage I built for her. So when I am not home she can have alot of room to move!

My rabbit lives in my kitchen (which is part of my open plan kitchen/living room) but she has a stair gate which stops her going into the living room section – hard to explain!

She has a small indoor cage which is open all the time for her to go in and out of – it has a litter box with hay in, her food and water and her bed box (a cardboard box with a towel in that she uses to sleep in)

Then in the kitchen she has lots of cardboard boxes to explore, some plastic tunnels, some toys, a wicker dog bed with a blanket in, an wicker car basket with blankets in that she sleeps in sometimes, and a soft squishy dog bed, oh and another litter box.

When I am at home with her she has access to the living room section as well – but only under supervision as her litter box habits aren’t 100% yet and I’m fed up of having bunny pee on the sofa!!!

I’ve only used open litter boxes for Pancakes, but I’ve seen posts where other members use them succesfully, I think it will depend on your rabbit but they can be great for keeping litter (and wee) in.

My buns have a small indoor cage that their hay and litter box is in. They like to have their own little area for some reason and get very upset with me if I dismantle it. I think it makes them feel more secure. I wish I didn’t have it…but buns will be buns and they will have their own way 🙂

I have the master bedroom for them, with one litter box in the left corner of it and one litterbox in the right corner of it, there is vinyl around the litter areas with a towel underneath it to prevent “accidents” ruining the wood floor. The closet of the bedroom is their “den” with blankets in there for them to sleep on, there are some suitcases in there as well cause it was used as storage and they like to hide behind them and don’t chew, so I let them stay. By the door they have a large cardboard box for hay, since they don’t like hay in their litter boxes (they won’t go to the bathroom near their hay, they are weird).

Some buns will use the covered ones, some won’t, depends on the rabbit.

I have an X-pen that I keep open. It has all of Taits things in it and he comes and goes as he pleases. He uses an uncovered litterbox and has never had a problem with litter or pee spilling over.

I found mine would not reliably use a closed litter box, but of course they don’t mind high sided cat litter boxes.

For mine currently they have a room, flooring is a garage type flooring made of ribbed rubber material (Secured under baseboards, three years they have not eaten or chewed it) with an NIC ramp and covered window seat There are pictures somewhere in this forum…

Nava is free roam in my room, but I did set up a small pen area where she can sleep, eat, use the box, and hide out during the day when she is at her laziest. She’s free roam but I kind of just wanted to set up an area that is just hers, which you could never go wrong with. Haha.

I don;t know about other peoples buns, but my Nava used to use a closed litter box. It was the cats when I had my own cat and it was kept in my room, and she would hop in it just to use it.
