So, I’ve tried to work through my allergies and just deal with it.. but I just reached my breaking point.

I was cleaning their cage and all the hay that was left on the carpet, and my eye is completely red and itchy, my asthma has kicked into overdrive, I’m sneezing uncontrollably, and the worst part is my arms are itchy and breaking out into hives. I wear a medical mask every time I give them hay and clean their area, and I have an air purifier going on at all times right next to their area. None of this has helped. I don’t think I can deal with timothy hay any more, but is there any other alternative hay? Or does anyone else deal with this and somehow found a solution? My parents keep saying I should give them to another family because I’m putting my own health at risk, but I just can’t bear the thought.

orchard and at hay are good alternatives Smudge and Monkey don’t get timothy hay anymore, Smudge is allergic, and they gobble up the orchard and oat like there is no tomorrow.

i snack on the bun’s oat hay too,,, it does remind you fo the cannisters of raw oats you buy in the grovery store, except theres a lot more chewing involved

What kind of hay do you use Angie? I feed Chacha some American Pet Diner Timothy Gold hay. I’m allergic to really dusty hay and the Timmy Gold does not even effect me! Chacha gets a mix of Timothy Gold and Orchard grass

We changed to orchard hay, it bugs me a little right when I’m refilling because of the dust, but I’m fine with it after that.

I’m also thinking Orchard Grass. Mature Oat Hay is the dry, whitish yellow stuff. Young Oat is more green. Orchard grass is totally different from Timothy so it may be best.

Might do a scratch test at your allergist to find out exactly what you are not allergic too. Once you know you can write it down in your records and buy accordingly.

If you touch the outside of the mask taking it off, does it get onto your skin anyway? Can you vacuum or hand vac up stuff and then ask someone else to empty it for you? Trying to think of ways for you to not accidentally handle the allergens. Sometimes the air purifier filter needs changing or it just blows the allergens back out again.

Keep thinking about this. I hate asthma and hives.
I just checked BB’s store, and she sells Hay Cubes, that say they are an alternative to hay. You could try those. Not sure they’d help since they are made from Timothy.

You could also try these Oat/Parsley Pellets. http://store.binkybunny.com/new-parsley-flavored-oat-pellets-floppers-garden-p155.aspx
Sammy adores them, and she only likes Oat Hay. They are not dusty at all.

I just bought a 50lb box of Oxbow Timothy, drove home with it and sneezed the entire way. I have been allergy tested and got a 5 on ALLL grasses, so not surprised by my allergy. Usually timothy doesn’t bother that much, but this last box? Wow. I have been a sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, plugged up ears, mess! I also know I cannot tolerate oat hay or meadow. I am fine with orchard and botanical. I have been giving the baby alfalfa and that does not bother me either.

                          I definitely feel your pain.

I’m also an allergy and asthma sufferer. I found that taking Allegra (actually the generic alternative) daily takes care of the problem. I was NOT going to deny my bunny his hay, and I was definately NOT going to rehome him. I’m glad that I found a solution, and hope that you will too.

@luvmyhunybuny do you think it’s the oxbow brand? Because that’s what I always buy them too..

@RabbitPam I have my boyfriend vacuum for me =P but cleaning out the cage and sweeping up the hay is my responsibility because it has to be done every few days. I also just changed my air purifier filter a couple days ago =]

Late last year, I bought Chacha a 50lb box of Oxbow Orchard Grass. I remember dumping it into the containers I put the hay in. I had an allergy attack and was on the couch for the rest of the night. She ended up snubbing the Orchard (she is picky), so I donated it to the Humane Society bunnies.

Oxbow, in my opinion, is a dusty to me and my allergies o_O

Would it help to take the bags and containers outside, wearing gloves and mask, and dump it so the dust is outdoors then you bring in your container?
I’m also thinking dumping it with a mesh strainer bag lining the container, so you can lift it out, dump the dust that filters through out of the container, then put it back in again. I know when I get to the bottom of the bags of hay I start to get sensitive, and it’s where the dust accumulates.
