My little bunny had diarrhea last night but doesn’t now. She is eating fine but she just sits and grinds her teeth a lot. I think she has gas or something like that. And I listened to her stomach and it gurgles. I don’t know what to do please help. I live in Saudi Arabia but I’m from England and they don’t have vets here. And I hear Semithicone is recommended. I just want her to get better. ![]()
Vets in Saudi Arabia:
1. http://www.eurovetclinic.com/ – This one is in Jeddah, and has a phone number listed. I’d call them, even if they aren’t near you, and ask if they know of any other vets near you if you can’t get to them.
2. Al-Ahsa-King Faisal University, College of Veterinary
Medicine and Animal Resources – They have a vet hospital, and universities are always a good bet for finding a decent vet.
http://www.kfu.edu.sa/en/Colleges/VeterinaryMedicine/Pages/ContactUs.aspx – Their phone number is on this page.
3. Buriedah-Qassim Branch, King Saud University, College of
Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine – They have a vet medicine college.
http://ksu.edu.sa/AboutKSU/Pages/Contactus_old.aspx – Phone number
http://www.ksu.edu.sa/AboutKSU/HighlycitedResearchers/Pages/Beynen.aspx – This is a professor that teaches there who has taught vet classes so I’m assuming he’s a vet. Give him a call.
If you can get simethicone (it’s given to babies for gas, most grocery stores and pharmacies carry it), give that. Massage the belly as much as the bunny will allow. Give 1 or 2 mL every hour for the first 3 hours, then after that 1 or 2 mL every 3-8 hours.
How old is your rabbit? Simethicone is not a cure all and you need to find out why she is having diarrhea if it’s a very young rabbit. Usually a young rabbit may suffer from coccidia. Simethicone will not help with this condition at all. It needs to be treated with albon.
If it’s an older rabbit it may just be runny cecals.
Thank you for the info I have given a small amount of epicogel which is the same as simethicone. She seems more active. I thing I forgot to mention is her stools have a yellow mucus on it. And have massaged her stomach. It’s definitely gas. Is there anything else I can do?

Also she is quite young not sure how old.
I don’t think it’s gas if she is having mucous in her stools. Has she had a checkup to check for coccidia?
Could you please tell me what coccidia is? There are no vets here.

Yes there are. I just linked you to 3 of them.

You need a vet. Do you have pet stores in the area? Animal control shelter? Go there and ask if there are any vets in the area.
Oh HannahK, what a horrible situation to be in! Can you call the vet and tell them the symptoms then ask your driver to pick up the recommended medicine with the required doses?
Also, it may be the food she’s eating that is causing her digestive problems. Do you feed her too many sweet things? Does your bunny have lots of hay?
I hope you can find a solution. I know that in KSA you face a lot of barriers, and you can’t just jump into the car and take your bunny to the vet.
There vets are so far away. I have managed to find a veterinary pharmacy so i’m going to take her there today. She is still eating and drinking fine, but at the moment she is sat on me hunched up and looks drowsy she has been doing this for a couple of days. Her stools still haven’t gone back to normal, and I don’t think it is coccidia. It’s tough here in Saudi they don’t have vets apart from in major cities which are just too far, there are no animal shelters. So my only option is the veterinary pharmacy. It’s even a struggle to get hay, which my husband is going to try and get today. Yesterday after I gave her the medicine she was more active but still hunching and grinding her teeth. I rang the vets which are suggested but they are just too far. I can’t just jump in a car, I have to wait for my husband to get back from work, but then I have another barrier they are at least 7 hours away if not more.
You need to find a vet you’re willing to get to. Bunnies live for about 10 years and this will not be the first time, but she’s in pain (teeth grinding) and self treating will not be effective.
I would get to the vet pharmacy asap. Ask the pharmacist who they know locally that you can take your bunny to. They may know someone closer who might not be a vet but might be knowledgeable in treating animals. If this is a vet pharmacy, then the prescriptions are coming from somewhere or someone and that means at least one local person. They will be able to give you more info. so be sure to write it down. Call a friend to drive you or at least have your husband take you later, but call the vet pharmacist right away to say the problem and when you’re coming at the latest. The pharmacist may even be able to give you a name over the phone. It sounds urgent to me. (Don’t rule out dog/cat vets. They can treat other animals in emergencies.)
I would not rule out coccidia. It very well could be this. They treat this with Albon in the US – you might ask the vet pharmacy if they carry this and I would do as RabbitPam suggests as well.
I’m almost sure its coccidia. I found a vet who gave her an injection she is more active she still grinds her teeth a bit but not as much it might be because of the injection. She is eating hay and I am giving her water through a syringe to make sure she is getting fluids. the vet would like to see her tomorrow.
I’m so glad you found help. Please keep us updated.
I will do thanks for your help. I’ve no idea what he gave her but ther was a language barrier and my husband explained the symptoms to the vet and he just gave her the injection.
